How to know if you are approved for unemployment - Washington ESD claim status check
I submitted my unemployment application through Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious about whether I've been approved or not. I can log into my account but it just shows 'claim under review' and doesn't give me any real information about my status. I tried calling the customer service line but kept getting busy signals. Is there a way to definitively know if my claim has been approved? What should I be looking for in my account? I really need to know because I have rent due next week and I'm counting on this money.

Check your eServices account regularly - when approved, you'll see a 'Weekly Claim' tab appear and your benefit amount will be displayed. Also look for any correspondence in your inbox about determination letters.

•I see the weekly claim tab but when I click it, it says I can't file until my claim is processed. Does that mean I'm still pending?

•Yes, that usually means you're still in the initial processing phase. Once approved, you'll be able to actually file your first weekly claim.

The determination letter is key - that's your official approval notice. It'll show your weekly benefit amount and tell you when you can start filing weekly claims. Sometimes it takes 2-3 weeks to get through the initial review process.

•Where would I find this determination letter? Is it mailed or available online?

Sean Murphy
•Both - it gets mailed to your address and also shows up in your eServices correspondence section. Check there first since mail can be slow.

I was in the same boat last month, couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me connected to a real person. They have this demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works - basically they call for you and wait on hold.

•That sounds too good to be true, how much does something like that cost?

•It was worth it for me since I was stressing about my claim status. They don't publish pricing on the site but I was able to get my questions answered same day instead of waiting weeks.

•Interesting, never heard of this before. Did they actually help resolve your claim issues or just get you connected?

ugh the waiting is the WORST part of this whole process!! I've been checking my account like 50 times a day and nothing changes. Why can't they just send an email when there's an update???

•Right?! It's 2025, how is their system so outdated? I feel like I'm going crazy refreshing the page.

•The system is definitely old but be patient. Most claims get approved unless there's an issue with your work history or reason for separation.

Also make sure you're checking for any outstanding issues that might be holding up your claim. Look for anything marked as 'fact finding' or 'pending adjudication' - those need to be resolved before approval.

NeonNinja
•I don't see any fact finding items, just says 'initial claim under review.' Is that normal?

Anastasia Popov
•Yes, that's the standard message during the initial processing period. You're probably fine, just need to wait it out.

Check your spam folder too! My determination letter email ended up there and I almost missed it. Also sign up for text alerts if you haven't already.

•Good tip about spam folder, I'll check that. Where do I sign up for text alerts?

•In your eServices account under 'contact preferences' - you can set it to text you when there are updates to your claim.

been there! the uncertainty is awful when you're depending on that money. for me it took about 2 weeks and then suddenly everything appeared at once - benefit amount, determination letter, ability to file weekly claims.

NeonNinja
•That gives me hope! Were you able to get backpay for the weeks you were waiting?
0 coins
Aisha Rahman
•Yes, you get paid for your waiting week if approved. Just make sure to file your weekly claims as soon as you're able to.

One thing to remember - even if you can't get through on the phone, don't panic. No news is usually good news with Washington ESD. Most claims are straightforward approvals, they just take time to process.

•That's reassuring. I keep imagining worst case scenarios where my claim gets denied for some reason I don't even know about.

•I had the same anxiety when I first filed. Trust me, if there was a problem with your claim, they would have contacted you by now for additional information.

Try calling early morning like 7:30-8am when they first open. That's when I finally got through after weeks of busy signals. But yeah, that Claimyr thing someone mentioned might be easier.

•I've tried calling at 8am sharp and still get busy signals. Maybe I need to try even earlier?

•It's really hit or miss. Some days I got through right away, other days I couldn't get through all day. The phone system is just overwhelmed.

What was your reason for unemployment? That can affect how long the review takes. If it was a layoff or reduction in force, it's usually pretty quick. If there were performance issues or you quit, it might take longer.
0 coins
NeonNinja
•It was a layoff due to company downsizing, so hopefully that helps my case. I have the layoff notice from HR too.

Carmen Flores
•Oh perfect, layoffs are usually approved pretty quickly since there's no question about eligibility. You should be fine.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed 8 days ago and still showing under review. At least I know I'm not the only one stuck in limbo.

•Glad I'm not alone! Are you checking your account obsessively too? It's driving me crazy.

Andre Dubois
•YES! I check it like 10 times a day hoping something changed. My friends think I'm losing it lol

Just to set expectations - 10 days is still within the normal processing timeframe. Washington ESD says to allow up to 21 days for initial claim processing, though most are done sooner than that.

NeonNinja
•21 days?! I really hope it doesn't take that long. I'm already struggling financially.

CyberSamurai
•That's the maximum timeframe, most people I know got approved within 10-14 days. Hang in there!

Make sure your contact info is up to date in your account. Sometimes they try to reach you and if they can't, it holds up the whole process.

•Just double-checked and everything looks correct. Phone number, email, address all match what I have currently.

Update on that Claimyr service I mentioned - I used them again this week for a different question and got connected within an hour. Way better than the 2+ hour hold times I was dealing with before.

•I'm seriously considering trying this. Did they help you get clarity on your claim status when you used them before?

Zara Khan
•Yes, the ESD agent was able to tell me exactly where my claim was in the process and gave me a realistic timeline. Made me feel so much better.

Another thing to look for - your claim summary page should show your base year wages and the quarters they're from. If that information is wrong, it could delay your approval.
0 coins
NeonNinja
•The wage information looks accurate to me. Shows wages from my last employer for the past 5 quarters.
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•Good, that means your employer reported your wages correctly. That's usually the biggest holdup in the approval process.

been waiting 3 weeks here and FINALLY got my determination letter yesterday! hang in there, it'll happen. Just felt like forever when you're waiting.

•That gives me hope! Were you able to file your first weekly claim right away after getting the letter?

•Yep, the weekly claim option showed up the same day I got the determination letter. Finally felt real!

Pro tip: screenshot your account status each day so you can see if anything changes. Sometimes the changes are subtle and you might miss them if you're not paying close attention.

NeonNinja
•That's actually a really good idea. I'll start doing that today.

The Washington ESD system is just slow, period. I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly - 10-14 days is totally normal for a straightforward claim approval.

NeonNinja
•Thanks for the professional perspective! It's reassuring to hear from someone who deals with this regularly.

•No problem! I see people panic about this all the time but the vast majority of eligible claims get approved, just takes patience.

Try using that Claimyr service if you really need peace of mind. I was skeptical at first but they actually got me through to someone who could check my claim status. Worth it to stop the anxiety spiral.

•I think I'm going to try it. This waiting and not knowing is killing me. Thanks for the recommendation!

•You won't regret it. Just having a real person tell you your claim looks fine and is processing normally makes such a difference.

Bottom line - you'll know you're approved when you can actually file your first weekly claim and you receive your determination letter. Until then, try not to stress too much about it.

•Easier said than done when you have bills to pay, but I understand. I'll try to be more patient.

•I totally get it, been there myself. Just remember that stressing won't make it go faster, and most claims do get approved eventually.
