How to know if your Washington ESD unemployment claim was approved - checking status

I submitted my initial unemployment claim through Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious about whether it was approved or not. I've been checking my account on the SecureAccess Washington (SAW) portal but I'm not sure what I'm looking for exactly. The status just says 'processing' but doesn't give me any clear indication if I'm approved or denied. I tried calling the customer service line but can't get through - just keeps saying high call volume and hangs up on me. How do you actually know for sure if your claim was approved? Is there a specific notification or does something change in your account? I need to know so I can start filing my weekly claims if I'm supposed to.

You'll get an official determination letter either by mail or through your online account. Usually takes 10-14 business days from when you filed. In your SAW account, look for the 'Correspondence' section - that's where electronic notices show up. The determination will explicitly say 'approved' or 'denied' and explain your weekly benefit amount if approved.

Thanks! I see the correspondence section but it's empty right now. Guess I just need to wait a bit longer.

Mine took exactly 12 days to show up in correspondence. Don't worry if it's not there yet.

ugh the waiting is the worst part!! I was in the same boat last month and couldn't get through on the phone either. It's so frustrating when you need answers and they make it impossible to talk to anyone.

YES exactly! I've called like 20 times and either get hung up on or wait for hours with no answer.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them myself. You put in your info and they call you back when they get an agent on the line. Saved me hours of calling. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Never heard of that but honestly at this point I'll try anything to get through to someone!

Check your claim summary page too. Once approved, you'll see your weekly benefit amount listed there along with your effective dates. Before approval it usually just shows $0 or says 'pending determination.' Also make sure you're not stuck in adjudication - that's when they need additional info from you or your employer.

What does adjudication mean exactly? I see that word mentioned but don't really understand it.

Adjudication is when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim before they can approve it. Could be they need to verify your work history, get info from your employer about why you left, or clarify eligibility issues. It adds time to the process but doesn't necessarily mean you'll be denied.

Make sure you're logging into the right place. Some people get confused between the general esd.wa.gov website and the actual claims portal. Your claim status and correspondence will be in your SecureAccess Washington account, not just on the general website.

I'm definitely in the right place - using the SAW login. Just nothing definitive showing up yet.

The system is SO slow right now. I filed 3 weeks ago and just got my determination yesterday. Don't panic if it takes longer than expected - they're still dealing with high volume from all the layoffs happening.

3 weeks?! That's way longer than what their website says. Did you end up getting approved?

Zoe Stavros

Yeah I got approved but the wait was brutal. The good news is once you're approved, you can file weekly claims retroactively so you don't lose any benefits for the waiting period.

One thing to watch for - if your claim goes into adjudication, you might see a notice asking for additional documents or information. Don't ignore those! You usually have 10 days to respond or your claim could be denied.

This happened to me and I almost missed the deadline because I wasn't checking my account regularly. Check at least every few days.

Good point, I'll make sure to check more frequently. Thanks for the heads up!

If you're really anxious about it, you can also check if your employer has responded to the separation notice. Sometimes delays happen because the employer hasn't sent back their paperwork yet. There's a section in your account that shows employer response status.

Where do I find that? I don't see anything about employer response in my account.

Look under 'Claim Details' or 'Claim Status' - there should be something about employer separation information. If it says 'pending employer response' that might be what's holding things up.

I've been through this process twice now and both times I got nervous when it took longer than expected. The determination letter is really the only way to know for sure. Everything else in the system is just status updates that don't give you the full picture.

That's reassuring, thanks. I guess I just need to be patient and wait for the official letter.

Just went through this last month and the Claimyr thing someone mentioned actually worked for me too. I was getting nowhere calling on my own but they got me through to someone who could check my claim status. Turns out I had been approved but the letter got delayed in the mail. Worth trying if you're really stuck.

That's the second person who mentioned Claimyr. Maybe I should give it a try if I don't hear anything in the next few days.

I was skeptical about using a third party service but honestly it saved me so much time and stress. The waiting and not knowing was driving me crazy.

Pro tip: if you do get approved, you'll also receive information about your job search requirements. In Washington you need to do 3 job search activities per week once you start filing weekly claims. Make sure you understand those requirements so you don't accidentally mess up your benefits later.

•

Good to know! I hadn't even thought about job search requirements yet. Thanks for the reminder.

The job search stuff is pretty straightforward but you have to keep track of everything. They can audit you at any time and ask for proof.

Don't stress too much about the timing. I know it's nerve-wracking when you're waiting for benefits to start, but Washington ESD is generally pretty good about processing claims within their stated timeframes. The 10-14 business day estimate is usually accurate unless there are complications.

Thanks, I needed to hear that. The waiting is just making me anxious about everything.

Make sure you're also checking your email regularly. Sometimes they send notifications there too, especially if there are issues with your claim that need attention.

Good point, I'll check my spam folder too just in case.

Once you get approved and start filing weekly claims, the process becomes much more routine. It's really just this initial approval period that's stressful because you don't know what's happening behind the scenes.

Looking forward to getting past this uncertainty phase. Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance!

The fact that your status shows 'processing' instead of 'under review' or 'adjudication' is actually a good sign. It means they're just working through the normal approval process and don't have any red flags that need investigation.

That's really helpful to know. I was worried that 'processing' meant something was wrong.

I'll echo what others have said about that Claimyr service - I used it a few months ago when I had questions about my claim and it really did work. Got connected to an actual Washington ESD agent within a few hours instead of spending days trying to call. Sometimes it's worth it just for the peace of mind.

Seems like a lot of people have had success with it. I might give it a try if I don't get my determination letter by early next week.

The video demo on their site really shows how simple it is. You basically just tell them what you need help with and they handle the calling part.
