When will I know if my Washington ESD unemployment was approved?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm getting anxious about when I'll hear back. The website just says 'your claim is being processed' but doesn't give any timeline. I really need to know if I'm approved so I can plan my finances. How long does it usually take to find out if your claim gets approved? Will they email me or do I need to keep checking the website?

Usually takes about 1-2 weeks to get an initial determination. You'll get a letter in the mail and can also check your account online.

•Thanks! Should I be worried if it takes longer than 2 weeks?

Luca Marino
•Not necessarily, sometimes they need more time to verify your work history or wage information.

Check your online account every few days. The status will change from 'processing' to either 'approved' or 'under review' before you get the official letter. If it goes to 'under review' that means adjudication and can take 4-6 weeks.

•What's adjudication exactly? Is that bad?

Nia Davis
•It's when they need to investigate something about your claim - like if you quit vs got fired, or if there are wage discrepancies. Not necessarily bad but takes longer.

•Mine went to adjudication and I waited 8 weeks! Couldn't get through to anyone on the phone either.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true.

•Yeah it's real. They basically keep calling for you until they get through. I was skeptical too but it actually worked.

•How much does it cost though?

•It's worth it if you really need to talk to someone. Way better than spending all day redialing.

The whole system is so slow and frustrating. I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything definitive. Meanwhile bills are piling up and I can't even get a human on the phone to ask what's taking so long.

•Same here! Filed almost a month ago and still waiting. This is ridiculous.

•The system is definitely backed up. Try calling right at 8am when they open, that's usually the best time to get through.

•I've tried that multiple times. Either busy signal or they hang up after 30 minutes on hold.

You should also make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. If you don't file them, you won't get paid for those weeks even if you're eventually approved.

•Really? I didn't know that. How do I file weekly claims if I'm not approved yet?
0 coins
Luca Marino
•You can still file them online. Just log into your account and look for the 'File Weekly Claim' option. You'll need to report any work you did and wages earned.

•This is important - I missed filing my first two weeks because I didn't know and lost out on that money even after I got approved.

Check your mail too. Sometimes the online system doesn't update right away but they'll send you a determination letter. That's the official word on whether you're approved or denied.

•Good point, I'll keep an eye on my mailbox. Thanks!

•If you get denied, don't panic. You can appeal the decision within 30 days.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember being so stressed about money while waiting for approval. Just try to be patient - most claims do get approved eventually if you're eligible.

Zara Malik
•That's reassuring. I'm definitely eligible so hopefully it won't take too long.

•What makes someone eligible vs not eligible?

Nia Davis
•You need to have worked enough quarters and earned enough wages in your base period. Also can't have been fired for misconduct or quit without good cause.

I finally got approved after 3 weeks but it was nerve wracking. The online status changed to 'approved' about 2 days before I got the letter in the mail. Keep checking your account!

•That gives me hope! I'm only at 1 week so far.

•Hang in there. Once you're approved the first payment usually comes pretty quick.

Still think the whole system needs an overhaul. Having people wait weeks just to know if they qualify is insane when people need money for rent and groceries.

•Agreed. Other states process claims much faster than Washington.

•The pandemic really overwhelmed the system and they're still catching up. It's slowly getting better but yeah, still frustrating.

Try using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier if you really need to talk to someone. I used it last month when my claim got stuck and they got me through to an agent who could explain what was happening.

Zara Malik
•I might try that if I don't hear something soon. Thanks for the suggestion.

•It's definitely worth it if you're stressed about your claim status. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding things up.

Don't forget to start looking for work too if you haven't already. You'll need to show job search activities once you start getting benefits. I learned that the hard way.

Zara Malik
•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?
0 coins
Carmen Ortiz
•I think it's 3 per week but check the requirements on the Washington ESD website to be sure.

Nia Davis
•It's 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking events, job fairs, etc. Keep a log of everything.

The anxiety while waiting is real. Just remember that most eligible people do get approved. Try to stay positive and keep checking your account regularly.

For what it's worth, I called using Claimyr yesterday and found out my claim is still being processed but should be done soon. The agent said no issues, just taking time to verify my previous employer's information. Much better than wondering!

Zara Malik
•That's exactly what I need - just to know what's happening. I think I'll try Claimyr too.

•Yeah the peace of mind is worth it. At least now I know there's no problem, just slow processing.

The online system usually updates before you get the letter. Mine showed approved on a Friday and I got the letter the following Tuesday. Just keep checking every day or two.

Zara Malik
•Good to know. I've been checking every day but maybe I should space it out a bit.

•Yeah don't drive yourself crazy checking constantly. Every couple days is fine.

If you get denied don't give up! I got denied initially but appealed and won. Sometimes they make mistakes or don't have all the information they need.

Zara Malik
•How long did the appeal take?

Giovanni Conti
•About 6 weeks total but I got backpay for the whole time once it was approved.

I work at a workforce center and see this question a lot. Generally 1-3 weeks for a decision if there are no complications. Adjudication can add 4-8 weeks but most claims don't go to adjudication.
0 coins
Zara Malik
•That's helpful to know. What usually triggers adjudication?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Hashimi
•Usually issues around why you left your job, wage discrepancies, or if you have multiple jobs in your base period. Most straightforward layoffs don't trigger it.

The key is don't panic if it takes a while. I know it's hard when you need the money but most eligible claims get approved. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims so you don't lose any weeks.

Zara Malik
•I've been filing weekly claims since I applied. Hopefully that was the right thing to do.

•Yes that's exactly right. You're doing everything correctly.
