When will I get unemployment benefits from Washington ESD after filing my claim?
I submitted my unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear anything back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I have no idea when I'll actually start receiving payments. I've been out of work for almost a month now and really need to know when these benefits will start coming through. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of delay? How long does Washington ESD typically take to process new claims?

The processing time can vary quite a bit depending on your specific situation. If your claim is straightforward with no complications, you might see your first payment within 2-3 weeks of filing. However, if there are any issues that need adjudication - like questions about why you left your job or conflicting employer information - it can take much longer, sometimes 4-6 weeks or more.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that's straightforward enough. Thanks for the timeline info.

•Even layoffs can get held up if the employer disputes the claim or there's missing wage information. It's frustrating but pretty common.

Have you been filing your weekly claims? Even if your initial claim is still processing, you need to keep filing those weekly claims to get paid for those weeks once your claim is approved. A lot of people miss this step and then wonder why they're missing payments.

•Yes, I've been doing the weekly claims every Sunday. At least that part seems to be working okay.

•Good! That's the most important thing. You can backdate but it's easier to just stay current with your weekly filings.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to check on my claim status but can never get through. The phone lines are always busy or I get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. Recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person at Washington ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. It was such a relief to finally talk to someone who could explain what was happening with my claim.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much does something like that cost?

•It's worth it just to get answers instead of sitting in limbo. The peace of mind knowing what's actually happening with your claim is huge.

•I might try this too. I've wasted so much time trying to get through on my own with no luck.

•Adjudication means they need to investigate something about your claim - could be employment verification, wage discrepancies, or questions about your job separation. It's nerve-wracking but doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem.

•how long does adjudication usually take? this is my first time dealing with unemployment

•Adjudication can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks depending on the complexity. If it's just basic verification, usually on the shorter end.

The whole system is a joke. I filed in December and didn't get my first payment until February. Two months! Meanwhile bills keep coming and they act like it's no big deal. And don't even get me started on the job search requirements - 3 job contacts per week is ridiculous in this market.

•Two months is definitely on the extreme end. Was there something specific holding up your claim?

•They said there was a wage discrepancy with one of my employers from 2023. Took forever to sort out even though it was clearly their error.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about. I can't wait two months for benefits to start.

Check your SecureAccess Washington account regularly for any correspondence or documents they might need. Sometimes they'll request additional information and if you don't respond quickly, it can delay processing even more. Also make sure you're meeting the work search requirements - that's another thing that can hold up payments.

•I've been checking daily but haven't seen any requests for additional info yet. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

•Same here, I check multiple times a day like it's going to magically update with good news lol

For what it's worth, my claim was approved exactly 18 days after I filed. I was laid off from a tech company and had straightforward employment history. The waiting period was brutal but once it got approved, I received all the back payments at once. Just try to be patient and keep filing those weekly claims.

•That gives me hope! 18 days seems reasonable. I'm at day 10 so maybe I'm getting close.

•Did you get the full back pay including the waiting week?

•Yes, I got paid for every week I had filed claims for once the initial claim was approved.

I used Claimyr last month when my claim got stuck in adjudication hell for 5 weeks. Finally got through to someone at Washington ESD who explained that my previous employer had contested the claim but never provided any documentation. The ESD rep was able to move my claim forward that same day. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human being who can actually see what's happening in the system.

•How did you find out about Claimyr? I'd never heard of it before today.

•Someone mentioned it in another unemployment forum. Figured I had nothing to lose since I wasn't getting anywhere calling on my own.

•Might be worth trying if you're really stuck. The stress of not knowing what's happening is almost worse than the actual wait.

Keep in mind that even after your claim is approved, there might be additional delays depending on how they process payments. Mine was approved on a Wednesday but I didn't see the deposit until the following Tuesday. Just don't panic if there's a few extra days between approval and actual payment.

•Good to know! I'll try to be patient even after I hopefully get the approval.

•Yeah, the payment processing can take 2-3 business days after approval. It's annoying but at least you know it's coming.

Has anyone else noticed that Washington ESD's website is super slow lately? Takes forever to load pages and sometimes kicks me out while I'm trying to file my weekly claim. Wonder if that's related to processing delays too.

•Yes! The site has been terrible for the past few weeks. I've had to try multiple times just to submit my weekly claim.

•I usually try to file early in the morning on Sundays when fewer people are probably using it. Seems to work better then.

•I've noticed the slowness too. Hopefully it's not affecting claim processing on their end.

If it makes you feel any better, most people I know who filed straightforward claims got their first payment within 3 weeks. The horror stories you hear about months-long delays are usually cases with complications or appeals. Since you were laid off and have been filing weekly claims, you're probably in good shape.

•Thanks, that does make me feel better. I'm trying to stay optimistic but it's hard when you're running low on savings.

Just remember to keep track of your job search activities too. Even if you're not getting paid yet, you still need to be doing the required 3 job contacts per week and logging them in your WorkSourceWA account. Don't let that slide while you're waiting for approval.

•Good reminder! I've been doing job applications but haven't been logging them properly. Need to get on that.

•Yeah, they can audit your job search activities at any time. Better to stay compliant from the start.

The third time I tried Claimyr, I actually got through to someone who could see that my claim had been approved three days earlier but there was a system glitch preventing the payment from processing. They fixed it while I was on the phone and I had my money the next day. Sometimes these technical issues just need a human touch to resolve.

•That's amazing that they could fix it in real time! Definitely seems worth trying if I get stuck.

•Stories like this make me think there are probably a lot of claims sitting in limbo due to technical glitches that could be easily fixed if people could just talk to someone.

Update us when you hear something! Always curious to hear how long it actually takes for people. Seems like everyone's timeline is different but it helps to know what's normal vs. what's a red flag.

I'm in almost the exact same situation - filed my claim about 8 days ago after being laid off and still showing "under review" status. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring and nerve-wracking! It sounds like 2-3 weeks is pretty normal for straightforward layoff cases, which gives me hope. I've been keeping up with my weekly claims and job search logging, so hopefully that keeps things moving smoothly. The hardest part is just not knowing - I keep refreshing my account hoping for an update. Thanks for asking this question, it's exactly what I needed to read today!

•I'm so glad this thread is helpful for you too! It's such a relief to know we're not alone in this waiting game. The "under review" status is definitely anxiety-inducing when you're counting on those benefits to pay bills. Sounds like you're doing everything right with the weekly claims and job search logging - that's what everyone here says is most important. Hopefully we'll both get good news soon! I'll definitely update this thread when I hear something, and I hope you'll do the same. We're in this together!
