When will my unemployment be approved - Washington ESD timeline confusion
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through Washington ESD three weeks ago and I'm still waiting for approval. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't received any correspondence about what's holding it up. I've been filing my weekly claims like I'm supposed to but obviously not getting paid yet. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD typically takes to approve claims? I'm starting to stress about my bills and rent coming due.

It really depends on your situation. If it's a straightforward layoff with no complications, Washington ESD usually processes claims within 2-3 weeks. But if there are any issues like quit vs fired, work availability questions, or they need to verify your wages, it can take much longer.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so it should be straightforward. No quit/fired issues or anything like that.

•Even straightforward cases can get delayed if Washington ESD is backed up or if there's a wage verification issue with your employer.

Three weeks is getting long but not unusual unfortunately. Washington ESD has been pretty backed up lately. Keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting - you'll get backpay once approved.

•Yeah I'm definitely keeping up with the weekly claims. Just nerve-wracking not knowing when it'll come through.

•Good advice about continuing the weekly claims. A lot of people stop filing and then lose out on benefits for those weeks.

If you're really concerned about the delay, you might want to try calling Washington ESD directly. I know their phone lines are swamped, but sometimes they can give you specific info about what's holding up your claim. I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to ESD agents when the lines are busy. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•I've tried calling so many times but can never get through. Always just busy signals or getting disconnected. What exactly does Claimyr do?

•Basically they handle the calling process for you and connect you when an agent becomes available. Saves you from sitting on hold for hours or constantly redialing.

•Never heard of that service but honestly anything that helps get through to Washington ESD sounds worth trying at this point.

ugh the waiting is the worst part! I'm in a similar boat - filed 2.5 weeks ago and still pending. My friend said her claim took 6 weeks to get approved last year so I'm trying not to panic yet but it's hard when you have bills piling up

•Six weeks?! That's terrifying. I really hope mine doesn't take that long.

•Six weeks is on the longer side but can happen if there are complications or if Washington ESD requests additional documentation.

Have you checked your SecureAccess Washington account to see if there are any action items or documents they're waiting for? Sometimes claims get stuck because Washington ESD needs additional information but the notification doesn't get delivered properly.

•I check my SAW account almost daily and there's nothing showing that I need to submit. Just the same 'under review' status.

•That's actually a good sign - means they're not waiting on anything from you, just processing internally.

The approval timeline can vary a lot. I've seen people get approved in 10 days and others wait 2 months. Unfortunately Washington ESD doesn't give much transparency into where your claim is in the process.

Melody Miles
•Two months sounds awful. I really hope that's not typical.

Kristian Bishop
•Two months is definitely not typical for straightforward layoff cases. That's more like if there's an adjudication issue or appeal involved.

I actually had success reaching Washington ESD through that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Used it last month when my claim was stuck and got connected to an agent who was able to tell me exactly what was holding things up. Turned out there was a minor issue with my employer's response that I never would have known about otherwise.

•That's really helpful to know! How long did it take for them to connect you to someone?

Jasmine Hernandez
•They called me back within a few hours and had me connected to an ESD agent. Way better than trying to call myself.

•Yeah that's been my experience too. Much more efficient than the endless busy signals.

just keep filing weekly claims and be patient. I know it sucks but there's not much else you can do. Washington ESD moves at their own pace unfortunately

Melody Miles
•I know you're right, just hard to be patient when bills are due.

•Totally feel you on that. The financial stress while waiting is the worst part.

One thing to keep in mind is that Washington ESD processes claims in the order they're received, but they also prioritize based on complexity. Simple layoff cases usually move faster than quit/fired situations that require adjudication.

Melody Miles
•That makes sense. Since mine was a clear layoff situation, hopefully it's just a matter of waiting a bit longer.

Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•Exactly. Your case should be pretty straightforward to process once they get to it.

If you do end up calling Washington ESD, make sure you have your Social Security number and the confirmation number from when you filed ready. They'll ask for that info right away.

Melody Miles
•Good tip, thanks. I have all that info saved in my phone.

•Also have your employment dates and reason for separation ready to go. They might ask about those details too.

Washington ESD has definitely been slower lately. My neighbor just got approved after 4 weeks of waiting. Stay strong!

•Four weeks is still better than some of the timelines people are mentioning. Gives me hope.

•Yeah 4 weeks seems to be pretty typical from what I'm hearing.

The key thing is that you're continuing to file your weekly claims. Once you get approved, you'll receive all the back benefits for the weeks you filed. So you won't lose out on money, just have to wait longer to receive it.

Melody Miles
•That's reassuring. I was worried I might lose benefits if the approval took too long.

Eva St. Cyr
•Nope, as long as you keep filing weekly you'll get backpay for all eligible weeks.

Try not to stress too much about the timeline. I know it's easier said than done when you're worried about bills, but Washington ESD will process your claim. The waiting is just part of the process unfortunately.

•I'm trying to stay positive. Just wish there was more transparency about where things stand.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - at least then I could get actual information about my claim status instead of just guessing.

hang in there! the waiting is terrible but you'll get through it. most people do get approved eventually, it just takes time

Quick update question - has your claim status changed at all from 'under review' or is it still showing the same thing? Sometimes the status updates before you get official notification.
0 coins
Melody Miles
•Still showing 'under review' as of this morning. No changes yet.
0 coins
Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•That's normal. The status usually stays the same until they make a final decision.

I'd definitely recommend trying to get through to Washington ESD if you can, either through their regular phone lines or through a service like Claimyr. Even if they can't speed up the process, at least you'll know if there are any issues or if it's just normal processing time.

Melody Miles
•I think I'm going to try that Claimyr service. Seems like several people here have had good experiences with it.

Washington ESD is just slow right now. My cousin waited 5 weeks for approval last month. It's frustrating but pretty normal unfortunately.

•Five weeks is a long time but at least she did get approved eventually.

•Yeah the important thing is most people do get approved, it just takes patience.

Final thought - if you haven't already, make sure you're signed up for job search activities through WorkSource. While you're waiting for approval, you might as well get a head start on meeting the work search requirements.

Melody Miles
•Good point. I registered with WorkSource but haven't been actively logging job searches yet. Should probably start doing that.

Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•Definitely start tracking your job search activities now. You'll need to show 3 job search activities per week once you're approved.

Melody Miles
•Thanks for the reminder! I'll start logging those activities right away.

I'm in a similar situation - filed my claim 2.5 weeks ago and still waiting for approval. It's really stressful not knowing when it will come through, especially with bills piling up. From what I'm reading here, it sounds like 3-4 weeks is pretty typical for Washington ESD lately, even for straightforward layoff cases. I've been keeping up with my weekly claims like everyone suggests. Has anyone found that checking the SecureAccess Washington account multiple times a day actually helps, or should I try to just check it once a week to preserve my sanity?
