How long does Washington ESD take to approve unemployment claims?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back. My claim status just shows 'pending' and I'm starting to worry. I know they're probably backed up but I really need to know when I might see some money coming in. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD typically takes to approve claims these days? I've been calling but can't get through to anyone.

It really depends on your situation. If it's a straightforward claim with no issues, Washington ESD usually processes them within 2-3 weeks. But if there are any complications like previous employers disputing it or you need adjudication, it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer.

•What kind of complications would trigger adjudication? I left my job voluntarily but it was because of harassment issues.

•Voluntary quit situations often require adjudication to determine if you had good cause. That could definitely add time to your claim.

I just went through this same thing last month. My claim took exactly 3 weeks to get approved, but I had to keep calling to check on it. The phone lines are brutal - I probably called 50+ times before getting through. Once I finally talked to someone, they told me everything was fine and it would be processed within a few days.

•How did you finally get through? I've been trying for days and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold.

•I started calling right when they opened at 8am, but honestly it was mostly luck. The system is just overwhelmed.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, you might want to check out Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get connected to actual agents without having to deal with the busy signals and long hold times. I used it when my claim was stuck in adjudication and it saved me hours of calling. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. You can check out their site at claimyr.com. It's not free but way better than spending entire days trying to get through.

•I've heard of this too, my neighbor used it when she had issues with her weekly claims. She said it was worth it just for the peace of mind.

Two weeks isn't that long honestly. I waited almost 6 weeks for mine to get approved because my previous employer contested it. Washington ESD has to investigate any disputes and that takes time. Are you filing your weekly claims while you wait? You need to keep doing those even if your initial claim isn't approved yet.

•Yes I'm filing weekly but I'm not getting any payments obviously. Did you eventually get back pay for all those weeks?

•Yeah once it was approved I got all the back pay in one lump sum. Just make sure you keep filing those weekly claims or you'll lose those weeks.

The whole system is a joke. I've been waiting 5 weeks now and still nothing. Every time I call they tell me it's "under review" but can't give me any timeline. Meanwhile bills are piling up and I'm about to lose my apartment. Washington ESD doesn't care about people, they just want to make it as hard as possible to get benefits.

•I feel you man, it's incredibly frustrating. Have you tried contacting your state representative? Sometimes they can help push things along.

•Hadn't thought of that, might be worth a try at this point.

•Also try reaching out through the secure messaging system on the Washington ESD website. Sometimes that gets faster responses than calling.

For what it's worth, Washington ESD approval times have gotten better since the pandemic ended. During 2020-2021 people were waiting months. Now it's usually within their stated timeframe of 2-4 weeks unless there are complications. The key is making sure you have all your documentation submitted correctly from the start.

•What documentation should I have ready? I submitted my application but wondering if I missed something.

•Make sure they have your separation information from your employer, your work history for the past 18 months, and any documentation about why you left your job if it wasn't a layoff.

One thing that helped me was checking my claim status online every few days. Sometimes there are issues that pop up that you need to respond to, and if you miss those it can delay everything. Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and make sure there aren't any alerts or requests for additional information.

•Good point, I'll check that right now. I've been so focused on calling that I haven't checked the website in a few days.

•Yeah definitely check online first. Half the time when people think their claim is stuck, there's actually something they need to submit or respond to.

My sister had the same issue and turns out she needed to complete a work search seminar before her claim could be approved. Check if you have any outstanding requirements like that. Washington ESD requires job search activities and sometimes orientations depending on your situation.

•How do I check what requirements I have? Is that in the online account too?

•Yes, it should show up in your to-do list or alerts section when you log in. Also check if you need to register with WorkSource.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr suggestion from earlier - I actually discovered it when I was in a similar situation to yours. I had been calling Washington ESD for weeks trying to get someone to explain why my claim was taking so long. After using Claimyr to finally reach an agent, I found out there was a simple form I needed to submit that nobody had told me about. Got approved within days after that.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about - that there's something I don't know I need to do. I might have to try that service.

•I was skeptical of Claimyr at first too but my experience was similar. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to figure out what's holding things up.

Been there! My claim took 4 weeks but only because I didn't realize I needed to complete the initial orientation. Once I did that it was approved in 2 days. The communication from Washington ESD isn't great about what you need to do.

•Where do you go for the orientation? Is it online or in person?

Luca Esposito
•It's online through WorkSource. Should be linked in your Washington ESD account if you need it.

Hang in there. I know the waiting is stressful but Washington ESD is generally pretty good about processing claims within their timeframes. If you haven't heard anything by week 4, that's when I'd really start pushing for answers. Until then, just make sure you're doing everything you're supposed to be doing on your end.

•Thanks for the encouragement. This whole process is more stressful than I expected.

•The first time is always nerve-wracking. It gets easier once you know how the system works.

Mine was approved in exactly 2 weeks but I had a straightforward layoff situation. Your voluntary quit might take longer since they have to review whether you had good cause. Make sure you documented everything about the harassment situation you mentioned.

Malik Johnson
•I kept emails and have witness statements. Hope that's enough.

•That sounds like good documentation. Washington ESD takes harassment seriously as good cause for quitting.

Washington ESD approval times: straightforward claims 2-3 weeks, claims needing adjudication 4-8 weeks, disputed claims can take 8-12 weeks. Voluntary quit with good cause usually falls in the 4-6 week range. Your 2 weeks is still normal.

had mine approved in 10 days but that was back in december when things were slower. friend of mine just got approved last week after 3 weeks so seems pretty consistent

If you're really worried, you can also check with local community resources. Some organizations help people navigate the unemployment system and might have insights into current processing times or issues with Washington ESD.

•That's a good idea. I'll look into what's available in my area.
