How long does it take for unemployment to be approved in Washington?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and still haven't heard anything back. My claim status just says 'pending' and I'm starting to get worried about when I'll actually see any money. I lost my job at a manufacturing plant and really need to know what to expect timeline-wise. Anyone know how long it typically takes for Washington ESD to approve claims these days? I've been doing my weekly claims but no payments yet.

Usually takes 2-3 weeks for initial determination if there are no issues with your claim. But if they need to verify anything or if it goes into adjudication it can take much longer.

•What kind of issues would cause delays? I answered everything honestly on my application.

•Common things are if they can't verify your wages, if your employer contests the claim, or if there's any question about why you left your job. Check your account regularly for any requests for information.

Took exactly 14 days for mine to get approved last month. No issues though - straightforward layoff situation. The key is making sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending or you'll lose those weeks.

•Wait, you have to keep filing weekly claims before it's even approved? I thought you only started that after approval.

Emma Swift
•Nope! You need to file weekly claims starting the week you apply. If you miss weeks you can't get paid for them later. It's in the handbook they send you.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected within like 20 minutes instead of calling for days straight.

•Might have to try that if I don't hear anything soon. Thanks for the tip!

Been waiting 5 weeks now and still nothing! My claim went into adjudication because apparently there was some confusion about my separation date. This system is absolutely broken. How are people supposed to survive waiting this long???

•Adjudication can take 6-8 weeks unfortunately. Did you try calling to see what specific information they need?

•I've tried calling probably 200 times. Either busy signal or I get hung up on after waiting on hold forever.

mine took forever because I had worked in two states last year and they had to get wage info from both places. ended up being like 6 weeks total but I did get backpay for all the weeks I filed

Madeline Blaze
•Did you have to do anything special since you worked in multiple states?

•Washington ESD handled most of it but I had to send them some pay stubs from my other job to verify wages. Was a pain but worked out eventually.

The approval timeline really depends on your specific situation. Clean layoffs with clear documentation typically process faster. If there's any gray area about your separation or wage verification needed, expect delays.

•What counts as a 'clean layoff'? I was let go due to budget cuts but had to sign some paperwork.

Max Knight
•Clean layoff means it's clearly not your fault - company downsizing, plant closure, lack of work, etc. The paperwork you signed was probably just standard separation documentation.

Just got approved yesterday after 16 days of waiting. No issues with my claim but it felt like forever when you're stressed about bills. Keep checking your account and make sure you're doing everything they ask for promptly.

•That's encouraging! Did you get your first payment right away after approval?

•Payment showed up 2 days after approval. They paid for all the weeks I had filed claims for while waiting.

For anyone still waiting, the Washington ESD processing times are posted on their website but they're not always accurate. Current posted time is 10-14 business days for straightforward claims, but that doesn't include adjudication cases.

•Those posted times are definitely optimistic. I've seen people wait way longer even for simple claims lately.

Aidan Hudson
•You're right, they seem to be conservative estimates. Volume has been higher than usual which is causing delays across the board.

Another thing about Claimyr - if your claim is taking longer than expected and you need to speak with someone to find out why, that's exactly the kind of situation where it's worth using. Much better than the endless calling game.

•How much does it cost though? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment.

•It's not free but honestly worth it if you're spending days trying to get through. Check their site for current rates. Way less stress than the alternative.

I think I messed up - I didn't realize I needed to keep filing weekly claims while waiting for approval. I've missed like 2 weeks now. Am I screwed?

•You might be able to get those weeks back if you can show good cause for not filing. Call Washington ESD as soon as possible to ask about it.

•Ugh, of course calling is the solution. Guess I'll be trying that for the next week straight.

•This is another situation where Claimyr might help - getting through to explain why you missed filing those weekly claims.

for what its worth my neighbor got approved in 8 days last month but her situation was really straightforward. no complications at all. so it can happen faster sometimes

•That gives me hope! My situation should be pretty straightforward too.

Pro tip: Make sure your job search activities are logged from day one even while you're waiting for approval. They can audit that stuff and you don't want to scramble to recreate weeks of job search records.

•Good point! I've been applying to jobs but haven't been tracking it formally. Need to start that ASAP.

LordCommander
•Yeah, keep detailed records. WorkSourceWA website has tools to help track your job search activities if you need them.

UPDATE: Finally got through to someone today using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. Turns out my employer submitted incorrect separation dates which was holding up my adjudication. Agent was able to flag it for review. Would never have found that out otherwise.

•Glad it worked for you! That's exactly the kind of thing that can drag on forever if you can't talk to someone who can actually look at your case.

•How long did it take to get connected through Claimyr?

Lucy Lam
•About 25 minutes from when I submitted the request to when I was talking to an actual Washington ESD rep. Night and day difference from regular calling.

Important reminder: Even if your initial claim is approved quickly, you still need to file weekly claims every week and meet all ongoing requirements. Approval is just the first step in the process.

Madeline Blaze
•What are the main ongoing requirements I should know about?
0 coins
Aidan Hudson
•File weekly claims on time, conduct required job search activities, report any work or income, respond to any requests from Washington ESD promptly. Keep detailed records of everything.

Just want to say hang in there everyone waiting for approval. I know it's stressful but most claims do get approved eventually. The waiting is the worst part but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

•Thanks, I needed to hear that today. This whole process is so nerve-wracking when you're already dealing with job loss.

Final thought for the OP - if you hit the 3 week mark with no updates and no requests for additional information, that's when I'd definitely recommend calling to check on status. Don't just assume no news is good news.

•Good to know! I'm at 10 days now so I'll give it another week before I start panicking.

Max Knight
•Exactly. Two weeks is normal, three weeks warrants a phone call to check what's happening.
