How long does Washington ESD unemployment take to process - still waiting after 2 weeks
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago and haven't heard anything back yet. My claim status just says 'submitted' and I can't tell if this is normal or if something's wrong. I lost my job at a manufacturing plant and need to know when I can expect my first payment. How long does unemployment take to get approved in Washington? Should I be worried that it's taking this long?

It usually takes 2-3 weeks for Washington ESD to process a new claim, so you're right in that timeframe. Have you been filing your weekly claims though? You need to do those even while waiting for approval.

•Yes I've been doing the weekly claims but wasn't sure if I was supposed to since nothing's approved yet. Thanks for confirming that's right.

•Yeah keep filing those weekly claims or you'll lose benefits for those weeks even after approval

took me about 3 weeks to get my first payment last year, but that was during busy season. depends if they need to verify anything with your employer

•Did they contact you at all during those 3 weeks or did it just randomly get approved?

•they sent one letter asking for more info about why i left my job, responded within a few days and then it went through

Two weeks is pretty normal for initial processing actually. Washington ESD has to verify your employment history and wages with your previous employers. The whole process usually takes 2-4 weeks unless there are complications like adjudication issues.

•Check your SecureAccess Washington account regularly. If they need documents or have questions, they'll post alerts there.

Mine took exactly 3 weeks last year. The waiting is stressful but they're pretty backed up. Make sure you've submitted all required documents and keep checking your SecureAccess Washington account for any requests.

•Yeah they sent an email and the status changed in my account. You'll definitely know when it happens.

Two weeks is pretty standard for initial processing. Mine took about 3 weeks before I got my first payment. The waiting period can feel forever when you're stressed about bills though.

Two weeks is pretty normal for initial processing. Washington ESD typically takes 2-4 weeks for a straightforward claim, but it can be longer if they need additional information or if there are any issues that require adjudication. Have you checked your online account to see if they've requested any documents?

Dmitry Popov
•I check my account daily but haven't seen any requests for additional info. Just shows 'under review' with no other details.

Two weeks is pretty standard for initial processing. Washington ESD typically takes 2-4 weeks for a decision on new claims, especially if they need to verify your employment history or wages. Have you checked your SecureAccess Washington account for any pending issues?

•Not yet - if it goes past 4 weeks or if you see 'adjudication' status, then you might want to call them.

The typical processing time for Washington ESD is 2-4 weeks for straightforward claims. If your claim requires adjudication (investigation), it can take 4-8 weeks or longer. Since you're only at 2 weeks, you're still within normal timeframes. Keep filing your weekly claims even while pending - they'll backdate payments once approved.

•What triggers adjudication? I was laid off due to company downsizing, seems pretty straightforward to me.
0 coins
Julian Paolo
•Common triggers include disputes about separation reason, wage discrepancies, or if you worked in multiple states. Sometimes it's random quality control checks.

Ella Knight
•this is helpful, i thought adjudication was only for people who got fired for cause

The waiting period can vary a lot depending on your specific situation. If you quit your job vs. being laid off, if there are any questions about your work history, or if they need to verify your wages with previous employers - all of these can add time to the process. Company downsizing should be straightforward though.

Dmitry Popov
•It was definitely a layoff, not quitting. They laid off about 30 people including me due to budget cuts.
0 coins
Zainab Khalil
•That should help speed things up since it's clearly not a voluntary separation. The wage verification might still take some time though.

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim status, I'd recommend checking out Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to an actual agent instead of being stuck on hold forever. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling when I had issues.

Washington ESD typically takes 21 days to process new claims, but restaurant workers sometimes get flagged for additional review because of tip reporting issues. Make sure you reported all your wages accurately including tips. If you're still pending after 3 weeks, you might want to call them.

Felix Grigori
•I did report my tips but maybe not perfectly. Should I be worried about that?

The processing time really depends on your specific situation. If you were laid off from a straightforward W-2 job, it's usually faster. If there are any questions about why you left your job or if you had multiple employers, it can trigger adjudication which adds weeks to the process.

Paolo Ricci
•I was definitely laid off - they closed our whole department. Hopefully that means it should be straightforward.

I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check my claim status. Phone lines are always busy and the online chat is useless. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person at ESD within like 10 minutes. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Turned out my employer hadn't responded to their request for information which was holding everything up.

Washington ESD typically processes claims within 2-4 weeks for straightforward cases. However, if there are any issues that require adjudication (like questions about your separation from work or eligibility), it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. The 'under review' status usually means they're verifying your employment history and reason for separation.

Two weeks is still within normal processing time. Washington ESD reviews each claim for eligibility which includes verifying your work history and reason for separation. If there are no issues, you should hear back soon. If it goes into adjudication, that's when it takes longer.

Processing times have actually improved compared to 2020-2021 when the system was overwhelmed.
