If you do end up needing to file and have trouble getting through to Washington ESD for any reason, that Claimyr thing really is worth trying. I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much time and frustration when I needed to update my claim information.
Final note for anyone reading this later: if you have questions about unemployment eligibility or your employer contests your claim, document everything and don't hesitate to appeal if you believe you're eligible. The system works when people use it properly.
thanks everyone, this was way more informative than anything i could find on the washington esd website. you all rock!
Last thing - make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if your initial claim is still pending. You can't get paid for weeks you don't file, even if you're approved later.
This thread has been super helpful! I'm in a similar situation and was just as confused about where to start. Sounds like the main steps are: 1) Go to esd.wa.gov to file initial claim, 2) File weekly claims every week, 3) Do job search activities, 4) Be patient and keep good records. Did I miss anything major?
That covers the basics perfectly. Just remember to check your account regularly for any messages or requests for additional information from Washington ESD.
And if you run into problems reaching them by phone, remember that Claimyr option I mentioned earlier. Sometimes you just need to talk to a person to get things sorted out.

If you do run into any complications or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD, I had good luck using Claimyr to get through to an actual person. Their system helped me bypass the endless hold times when I had questions about my claim verification. The demo video they have explains it pretty well.

•I'm skeptical of paying for something that should be free, but I guess if you're desperate to get answers...

•I was skeptical too, but after spending weeks trying to get through on my own, it was worth it to actually talk to someone who could help resolve my issue.

quick question - do you need a social security number to apply for washington unemployment? or can you use your individual taxpayer identification number?

•You'll need a Social Security Number for unemployment benefits. DACA recipients are eligible for SSNs, so you should apply for one if you don't have it already.
