How long does Washington ESD unemployment take to process initial claim?
Filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and still haven't heard anything back. My status just says 'pending determination' and I'm starting to worry. I lost my job at a manufacturing plant and need to know when I can expect my first payment. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD typically takes to process new claims? I've never filed for unemployment before so I don't know what's normal.

Washington ESD usually takes 2-3 weeks for initial processing if there are no issues with your claim. The 'pending determination' status means they're reviewing your eligibility and work history. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending or you could lose benefits for those weeks.

•Thanks, I wasn't sure if I should file weekly claims yet. I'll do that this week.

•Definitely file weekly claims! I made that mistake and lost 3 weeks of benefits because nobody told me.

took me about 3 weeks when i filed last year but that was during busy season. if you got laid off from manufacturing they might need to verify with your employer which can add time

•My employer said they would respond quickly if Washington ESD contacts them. Hopefully that speeds things up.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a system that gets you through the phone lines automatically - saved me hours of calling. Check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already worried about money.

•It's worth it when you need answers fast. Way better than spending all day redialing Washington ESD and getting busy signals.

•I've heard of that service but haven't tried it yet. Might be worth it if this drags on much longer.

The timing really depends on your specific situation. Simple layoffs with clear work history usually process faster. If you were fired, quit, or have any complicated employment situations, Washington ESD might need to do adjudication which can take 4-6 weeks or longer. They have to investigate and sometimes contact your employer.

•It was a clear layoff - the whole department got eliminated. So hopefully that means it'll be straightforward.

•Even layoffs can get complicated if they think you might have known about it in advance or if there were any performance issues. Washington ESD is pretty thorough.

I'm on week 5 waiting for my claim to be approved. Called Washington ESD probably 50 times and only got through twice. Both times they just said 'still processing' and couldn't give me a timeline. It's ridiculous.

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did they say what's taking so long?

•Something about needing to verify my job search activities from my previous claim two years ago. Makes no sense.

•That's when Claimyr would be helpful - at least you'd get through to someone who could explain what's actually happening.

Keep in mind that even after your claim is approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you receive your first payment. So if processing takes 3 weeks plus the waiting period, you're looking at about 4 weeks total from when you first filed.

•Wait, there's a waiting period even after approval? That seems harsh when people are already struggling.

•Yes, it's called the waiting week. It's been part of Washington's unemployment system for years. You don't get paid for that first week but all subsequent weeks are covered.

The waiting is the worst part. I was so anxious I checked my account like 10 times a day. Try to stay busy with job searching - Washington ESD requires you to look for work anyway and it helps pass the time.

•Good advice. I've been applying to jobs but haven't been tracking it formally yet.

•Make sure you start keeping a job search log now. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they audit people regularly.

WASHINGTON ESD IS A JOKE. I waited 7 weeks for my claim and when it finally got approved they said I owed them money from a previous claim I never even filed. Their system is completely broken.

•That sounds like identity theft or a system error. Did you file an appeal?

Amara Nnamani
•Yeah I'm appealing but that's another 6-8 week wait. Meanwhile I'm broke and can't get any benefits.

For what it's worth, I filed 3 weeks ago and just got approved yesterday. Manufacturing layoff too. Got my first payment this morning. So it can happen relatively quickly if everything checks out.

•That gives me hope! Did you have to do anything special or did it just process normally?

•Nothing special. Just filed my weekly claims and waited. I think the key was that my employer responded quickly when Washington ESD contacted them.

The unpredictability is what gets me. Some people wait 2 weeks, others wait 2 months. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Washington ESD needs to be more transparent about their process.

•I think it depends on which adjudicator gets your case. Some are faster than others.

•Or how backed up they are in your region. Seattle area claims seem to take longer than rural areas.

My sister used that Claimyr service when her claim got stuck and actually got through to someone who could explain the delay. Turned out Washington ESD needed additional documentation she didn't know about. Got it sorted within a week after that.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about - missing some requirement I don't know about.

•The problem is Washington ESD doesn't communicate well. You can have missing documents and not know for weeks.

Just be patient but proactive. File your weekly claims, keep job searching, and if it goes past 4 weeks definitely try to get through to someone at Washington ESD to check on status. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

One thing nobody mentioned - make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your Washington ESD account. I had a typo in my account number and it delayed my first payment by another week even after approval.

•Good catch! I'll double check that right now.

•Same thing happened to my cousin. Washington ESD should verify that stuff better.

The whole system needs an overhaul. Other states process claims way faster than Washington. But unfortunately we're stuck with what we have.

•At least we have unemployment benefits. Better than nothing I guess.

•True but that's a pretty low bar. We pay into this system and deserve better service.

For future reference, you can check your claim status online through SecureAccess Washington. It doesn't always have detailed info but sometimes shows if documents are needed or if there are issues.

•I check that every day but it just says pending determination. No other details.

•That's typical. The online system doesn't show much detail unfortunately.

I know someone who tried Claimyr when they couldn't get through to Washington ESD for weeks. They were skeptical at first but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent who could see exactly what was holding up their claim.

•It's worth it for peace of mind if nothing else. At least you know what's happening with your claim.
