How long does unemployment take to approve in Washington - been waiting 2 weeks
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 2 weeks ago and still haven't gotten any approval or denial. My claim status just says 'under review' when I log into my account. I've been doing my weekly claims but no payments yet. Is this normal? How long does it usually take for Washington ESD to approve a claim? I'm starting to stress about bills piling up.

Two weeks is pretty typical for initial processing. Mine took about 3 weeks last year before I got my first payment. The weekly claims you're filing now will get paid retroactively once approved.

•That's somewhat reassuring. Did you have to do anything special or did it just automatically approve?

•Just kept filing weekly claims and waiting. As long as you didn't have any red flags it should process normally.

The standard processing time for Washington ESD is 2-4 weeks for straightforward claims. If there are any issues that need adjudication (like questions about why you left your job or work availability), it can take 6-8 weeks or longer.

•What kind of issues trigger adjudication? I was laid off due to company downsizing so I thought it would be straightforward.

•Layoffs are usually pretty straightforward. Adjudication typically happens with job separations that aren't clear-cut, like quitting or being fired for cause.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I had success using Claimyr recently. It's a service that helps you actually reach a human agent instead of getting stuck in phone hell. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped me get answers about my pending claim.

•Interesting, I haven't heard of that. How does it work exactly?

•You go to claimyr.com and they basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of trying to get through.

•Is there a cost for that service? Sounds too good to be true.

ugh the waiting is the worst part! I'm going through the same thing right now, filed 3 weeks ago and NOTHING. Keep checking my account obsessively but no updates.

•Right?? I check like 5 times a day hoping something changed. It's so stressful.

•I remember doing the same thing. The waiting really is the hardest part when you need the money.

Washington ESD is notorious for being slow. I've heard people waiting 2+ months just to get their first payment. The system is completely broken if you ask me.

•While there can be delays, 2+ months is not typical for standard claims. That usually indicates there's an issue that needs resolution.

•Maybe not 'typical' but it happens way more than it should. The whole system needs an overhaul.

just keep filing ur weekly claims even if no approval yet!! i made the mistake of stopping and it messed up my whole claim

•Good point, I've been keeping up with the weekly filings. Did you have to restart your whole claim?

•had to reopen it which delayed everything even more. definitely keep filing no matter what

Just to clarify the process: Washington ESD has 10 business days to make an initial determination on your claim. If they need more info, they'll send you a request. The 2-4 week timeframe I mentioned earlier includes time for any additional documentation they might need.

•So if I haven't heard anything after 10 business days, should I be calling them?

Kiara Greene
•You can try calling, but the phone lines are usually swamped. Check your SecureAccess Washington account for any messages or document requests first.

Mine took exactly 3 weeks and 2 days. Got approved on a Thursday and first payment hit my account the following Tuesday. Just hang in there!

•That gives me hope! Did you get paid for all the weeks you were waiting?

Christian Burns
•Yep, got paid for every week I filed a claim going back to my first week of unemployment.

If you do end up needing to call Washington ESD, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned. The regular customer service number is almost impossible to get through to during business hours.

•I've been trying to call for weeks with no luck. Might have to look into that.

•Same here, spent 2 hours on hold yesterday just to get disconnected.

One thing to watch for - make sure you're meeting the job search requirements while you wait. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you need to log them.

Joy Olmedo
•I've been applying to jobs but not logging them anywhere. Where do I do that?
0 coins
Isaiah Cross
•You can log them in your WorkSourceWA account or keep a written log. Washington ESD may ask to see your job search records.

Wait, we have to do job searches even before the claim is approved? That seems backwards.
0 coins
Kiara Greene
•Yes, the job search requirement starts from your first week of filing, not from when you get approved. It's one of the eligibility requirements.

•Great, another thing to worry about. Thanks for letting me know though.

Been there! The anticipation is killer when you're waiting for that first approval. But once it comes through, the relief is amazing. Just keep doing everything you're supposed to do and it'll work out.

•Trying to stay positive but it's hard when bills are due. Thanks for the encouragement.

The fact that people have to use third-party services like Claimyr just to reach their own unemployment office shows how broken the system is. We shouldn't have to pay extra just to get basic customer service.

•I hear you on that, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get answers. The system isn't perfect but we still need our benefits.

•True, just frustrating that it's come to this.

•First time filing for unemployment. I've been working steady for the past 5 years before this layoff.

•should be straightforward then. first time claims usually dont have complications

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Once you're approved, it's faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail.

•Good call, I think I did that when I filed but I'll double check.

Just remember that Washington ESD processes thousands of claims every week. While the wait is frustrating, most claims do get approved eventually as long as you meet the eligibility requirements.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I know I qualify so I just need to be patient.

Ugh I remember this feeling. Check your account early morning like 6am, sometimes updates show up overnight.

•I'll try that! I usually check during the day but maybe early morning is better.

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, that Claimyr service really is worth it. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Saved me so much time and frustration.
