How long does it take for Washington ESD unemployment to approve you - still waiting after 4 weeks
Filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about a month ago and I'm still stuck in limbo. My claim status just shows 'under review' and I haven't received any payments yet. I've been filing my weekly claims like I'm supposed to but nothing is happening. How long does Washington ESD typically take to approve new claims? I'm starting to panic because my savings are running out and I need to know if this is normal or if something went wrong with my application.

The approval timeline really depends on your specific situation. For straightforward claims with no complications, Washington ESD usually processes them within 2-3 weeks. However, if your claim requires adjudication (like if you were fired, quit, or there are wage discrepancies), it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer. Check your SecureAccess Washington account to see if there are any pending issues that need your attention.

•I checked my SAW account and don't see any issues listed. Just says 'claim under review' with no other details. Should I be worried that it's taking this long?

•Not necessarily. Sometimes claims just take longer due to high volume or if they need to verify your employment history with multiple employers. Keep filing your weekly claims though - that's important.

I'm in the same boat! Filed 3 weeks ago and still nothing. The waiting is killing me financially. Has anyone tried calling Washington ESD to check on their claim status?

•Good luck getting through on the phone. I've been trying for weeks and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting for hours. The phone system is completely overwhelmed.

•Actually, I had luck with a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have this system that keeps calling until they connect you to a real person. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked - got through in about 20 minutes instead of hours of trying myself. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

mine took 5 weeks to get approved last year but that was during covid so maybe it's different now? the worst part is not knowing whats happening

•Five weeks?? I really hope it doesn't take that long. Did you ever find out why it took so long?

•they said it was because they had to verify my wages with my previous employer and it took forever for the employer to respond to their request

Here's what typically happens during the approval process: Washington ESD first verifies your identity and employment history, then calculates your benefit amount based on your wages from the past 18 months. If everything checks out, you'll get approved. If there are red flags (like conflicting information about why you left your job), it goes to adjudication where a specialist reviews your case manually.

•What kind of red flags trigger adjudication? I'm worried my claim might be flagged because I was laid off from a temporary position.

•Temporary layoffs usually aren't an issue. Red flags are more like: being fired for misconduct, quitting without good cause, wage discrepancies between what you reported and what your employer reported, or if you're receiving other benefits like workers comp.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!! I've been waiting 6 WEEKS and still no word from Washington ESD. Meanwhile I'm about to lose my apartment because I can't pay rent. This is ridiculous - how are people supposed to survive while waiting for benefits they're entitled to?

•I feel your frustration. Have you looked into emergency assistance programs while you wait? Some local food banks and utility companies have programs for people waiting on unemployment benefits.

•I shouldn't have to rely on charity when I paid into this system for years! But yeah, I've been to the food bank twice already.

For what it's worth, I just got approved after 4 weeks of waiting. No adjudication or anything complicated - just took that long. The backpay came through all at once for the weeks I had been filing. Hang in there, it's frustrating but it does happen eventually.

•That gives me hope! Did you get any notification when it was approved or did the money just show up?

•I got an email saying my claim was approved and then the direct deposit hit my account about 2 days later. The waiting was the worst part.

Quick question - are you guys filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval? I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do that since I haven't been approved yet.

Yara Haddad
•YES, absolutely keep filing your weekly claims! This is crucial. If you don't file them, you won't get paid for those weeks even after you're approved. Washington ESD requires continuous weekly filing to establish your claim for each week.

•Okay good, I have been filing them. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.

I work for a company that processes unemployment claims (not Washington ESD but similar process). The 2-4 week timeframe is pretty standard for initial processing. What slows things down is usually: incomplete applications, employers not responding to verification requests quickly, or high claim volumes during certain times of year.

•Do you know if there are certain times of year when processing is slower? Like is it worse right now because of holiday layoffs?

Isabella Santos
•January and February tend to be busier due to seasonal layoffs and holiday retail job endings. Summer can also be busy with students filing claims. But honestly, it's been consistently high volume since 2020.

Has anyone tried the Claimyr service that was mentioned earlier? I'm desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my claim but can't get through on the phone.

•Yeah that was me who mentioned it. I was really skeptical but it actually worked. I got connected to an agent who was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim. Turns out there was a simple verification issue that I was able to resolve right on the call.

•Sounds too good to be true honestly. How much does it cost?

•I'd rather not get into pricing here, but for me it was worth it to finally get answers after weeks of uncertainty. You can check their website at claimyr.com for details.

Pro tip: if your claim is taking longer than 4 weeks, you can request an expedited review. You have to call Washington ESD and specifically ask for it, but sometimes it helps move things along if you're facing financial hardship.

•How do you request an expedited review? Is there a specific process or do you just ask when you call?
0 coins
Omar Hassan
•You just ask for it when you speak to an agent. They'll ask you to explain your financial hardship situation. It's not guaranteed but it's worth trying if you're really struggling.

Check your mail too, not just your online account. Sometimes Washington ESD sends important notices by regular mail that you need to respond to. I almost missed a verification form that would have delayed my claim even more.

•Good point! I got a form asking me to verify my work search activities that I had to mail back. Didn't show up in my online account at all.

•I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet but I'll keep checking. Thanks for the heads up!

The uncertainty is the worst part. I wish Washington ESD would just give better updates on where your claim stands in the process. Even a simple 'we're verifying your employment history' would be better than 'under review'.

•Totally agree. Other states have much better online systems that actually tell you what step your claim is on. Washington's system feels like it's from 2005.

•The lack of transparency is definitely frustrating. Most of the time the delay is just due to processing volume, but there's no way for claimants to know that vs. thinking something is wrong with their claim.

Update: just got off the phone with Washington ESD (finally!) and they said my claim is approved and payment should process tonight. Took exactly 4 weeks from when I filed. For anyone still waiting, keep the faith!

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Figured it was worth a shot since I was getting nowhere calling myself. Got connected in about 15 minutes.

For future reference, you can also check the status of your claim by looking at your 'Payment History' in your SecureAccess Washington account. Even if it says 'under review' on the main page, sometimes the payment history will show pending payments once your claim is actually approved.

Been there! My claim took 5 weeks but once it was approved I got all the back payments at once. The key is to stay on top of your weekly claims and don't miss any weeks even while you're waiting. Washington ESD won't pay for weeks you didn't file for.

•This is so important! I made the mistake of not filing for two weeks early on because I thought I had to wait for approval first. Lost out on those payments completely.

•Good thing I've been filing every week then. It's annoying to file when nothing is happening but sounds like it's necessary.

From my experience, if it's been over 4 weeks you should definitely try to contact Washington ESD to check on the status. Sometimes claims get stuck for silly reasons like a missing signature or a form that didn't get processed properly.

•Exactly! My claim was held up for an extra 2 weeks because they needed me to verify my identity and I never got the notice. Once I called and found out, it was resolved within a day.

•This is making me more motivated to actually get through to someone on the phone. I'm going to try that Claimyr thing tomorrow.
