How long it takes for Washington ESD unemployment to get approved - still waiting after 6 weeks
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD back in early December and I'm still sitting here waiting for approval. My claim status just says 'under review' and I haven't received a single payment yet. I lost my job at a warehouse in Tacoma due to layoffs - nothing complicated about my situation. I've been doing my weekly claims religiously and meeting all the job search requirements but still no word from Washington ESD. My savings are running out and I'm getting desperate. How long does it normally take for unemployment claims to get approved in Washington? Is 6 weeks normal or should I be worried something's wrong with my application?

6 weeks is definitely longer than usual. Most straightforward claims get approved within 2-3 weeks max. Have you checked if there's any adjudication issues on your account?

•How do I check for adjudication issues? I log into my account but don't see anything obvious that needs my attention.

•Look under the 'Claim Status' section - it should tell you if there's an adjudication in progress or if they need additional information from you.

Same thing happened to me last year. Took forever to get through to someone at Washington ESD to find out what was holding up my claim. Turns out there was a small discrepancy in my work history that needed to be cleared up.

•How did you finally get through to them? I've tried calling but can never get past the busy signal.

•I actually used a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Found it at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Way easier than spending hours on hold.

The approval timeline really depends on whether your claim triggers any red flags in their system. Simple layoff cases should process quickly, but sometimes they randomly select claims for additional verification even when everything looks normal.

•What kind of red flags would cause delays? I was honest about everything on my application.

•Could be anything - previous employers disputing the layoff, wage discrepancies, or just random quality control reviews. Washington ESD doesn't always tell you what specific issue they're investigating.

This is exactly why the unemployment system is broken! 6 weeks to approve a simple layoff claim is absolutely ridiculous. People have bills to pay and can't wait around forever for bureaucrats to do their jobs.

•I feel your frustration but getting angry doesn't really help solve the problem. The system is definitely slow but there are ways to get answers.

•Easy to say when you're not the one waiting 6 weeks for money you're legally entitled to!

Have you tried reaching out to your former employer to make sure they responded to Washington ESD's inquiry? Sometimes the delay is on the employer's end, not the state's.

•Good point - I hadn't thought of that. I'll contact HR tomorrow to see if they received anything from Washington ESD.

•Yeah, employers have a certain timeframe to respond to benefit claims, but some are slow or don't prioritize it. Worth checking on.

6 weeks seems excessive but I've heard of cases taking even longer during busy periods. The good news is that once approved, you'll get back pay for all the weeks you were eligible.

•That's reassuring at least. I was worried I might lose those weeks if the approval took too long.

•Nope, as long as you've been filing your weekly claims, you'll get paid for all eligible weeks once approved.

Just wanted to follow up on my earlier comment about Claimyr - I was skeptical at first but it really did help me reach a Washington ESD agent within a day instead of weeks of trying on my own. Might be worth looking into if you need answers quickly.

•Never heard of this service before. Is it legit or one of those scammy things?

Jade Santiago
•It's legitimate - they just help you get through the phone system more efficiently. I was able to find out exactly what was holding up my claim and got it resolved.

One thing to check - make sure you haven't missed any correspondence from Washington ESD. Sometimes they send letters or emails that go to spam, and if you don't respond within the timeframe, it can delay your claim indefinitely.

•I've been checking my mail and email religiously but I'll double-check my spam folder just in case.

•Also check your secure message center in your Washington ESD online account - they sometimes send important notices there too.

ugh this brings back memories of my own unemployment nightmare last year... took 8 weeks for mine to get approved and I was basically living on credit cards the whole time. The stress was unreal.

William Schwarz
•8 weeks?! That's even worse than my situation. How did you survive financially that long?

Olivia Evans
•Borrowed money from family and maxed out credit cards. Not ideal but had no choice. At least the back pay helped me catch up once it finally came through.

If you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD directly, try calling right when they open at 8 AM or during lunch hours when call volume might be lower. The automated system is brutal during peak times.

•I've tried the early morning approach but still can't get through. Maybe I need to be more persistent.

•Yeah it's frustrating. That's why some people use services like the one mentioned earlier to get through faster.

been there done that with the waiting game

•How long did yours take?

•about 5 weeks but this was during covid so everything was backed up

Another possibility - if you worked for multiple employers in your base period, Washington ESD has to verify wages with each one, which can slow down the process significantly.

William Schwarz
•I only had one employer for the past two years, so that shouldn't be the issue in my case.

Sophia Bennett
•Then it's probably just a random review or employer response delay. Frustrating but hopefully it gets resolved soon.

The fact that people have to use third-party services just to reach their own state unemployment office is absolutely insane. This system needs a complete overhaul.

•I mean, you're not wrong, but complaining doesn't help people who need answers right now.

•Someone needs to hold these agencies accountable for their terrible service though.

My sister went through this exact same thing - 6+ weeks waiting for approval on a straightforward layoff claim. She finally got through to someone who told her it was just sitting in a queue waiting for manual review. No actual problem, just understaffed.

•That's both reassuring and infuriating at the same time. Good to know there's probably nothing wrong with my claim though.

•Yeah, she was relieved when she found out it wasn't anything she did wrong. Just the slow bureaucratic process.

Update on Claimyr for anyone interested - I used them again recently for a different Washington ESD issue and got connected to an agent same day. Really takes the stress out of trying to reach them through normal channels.

•Worth it for the peace of mind and time saved, especially when you're dealing with delayed unemployment benefits.

Keep filing your weekly claims no matter what! I made the mistake of stopping when my approval was delayed and it caused even more problems when I finally got approved.

William Schwarz
•Yeah I've been keeping up with the weekly claims even though it feels pointless right now.

•Good! Those weekly claims are what establish your eligibility for each week, even if the overall claim isn't approved yet.

6 weeks is longer than typical but not unheard of. I work in HR and we've seen Washington ESD approval times vary wildly depending on their current workload and staffing levels.
0 coins
William Schwarz
•Any insider knowledge on what might speed up the process?
0 coins
Eli Wang
•Not really - once it's in their system, it's mostly just waiting for them to work through their queue. Making contact to check status is about all you can do.

Thanks everyone for all the advice and reassurance. I'm going to try contacting my former employer tomorrow and maybe look into that Claimyr service if I can't get answers soon. At least I know I'm not the only one dealing with these delays.

Just saw this thread and wanted to add that I finally got approved after 7 weeks. Turned out my previous employer initially contested the claim but then withdrew their objection. Never got any notification about the contest until I specifically asked about it.

William Schwarz
•Wow, that's concerning that they don't notify you about contests. How did you find out?

•Only found out when I finally got through to an agent who could see the full case history. Definitely worth getting someone on the phone if possible.
