How long to wait for unemployment benefits approval from Washington ESD?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I'm starting to get really anxious about when I'll actually see any money. I know they're probably backed up but I'm running out of savings fast. For those who have been through this process recently, how long should I realistically expect to wait for my first payment? Is 2 weeks normal or should I be concerned something's wrong with my application?

The typical processing time for new Washington ESD claims is 2-4 weeks, but it can vary depending on your specific situation. If your claim requires additional verification or if there are any issues with your work history, it could take longer. Have you been filing your weekly claims even though you haven't been approved yet?

•Yes I've been doing the weekly claims religiously. Should I be worried that it's taking this long?

•Not necessarily. Keep filing those weekly claims - you'll get backpay for all the weeks you were eligible once approved.

Mine took almost 3 weeks last year and I was freaking out too. The waiting is the worst part honestly. But once it got approved everything came through at once - all the back payments hit my account within 2 days.

•That's reassuring to hear! Did you do anything to speed up the process or just wait it out?

•I tried calling a few times but could never get through. Eventually just had to be patient.

If you're getting anxious about the wait, you might want to try calling Washington ESD to check on your claim status. I know their phone lines are crazy busy, but sometimes they can tell you if there are any issues holding things up. There's actually a service called Claimyr that helps people get through to unemployment offices - check out claimyr.com. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•I've tried calling so many times but can never get through. Is this Claimyr thing legit?

•Yeah it's real. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual person. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Never heard of that before but might be worth a shot if you're really stuck.

2 weeks is actually pretty normal. I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. Most people get approved within 2-4 weeks unless there's an issue that requires adjudication. The key is to make sure you're filing your weekly claims and that all your information was accurate when you applied.

•What kind of issues would require adjudication? I'm worried I might have messed something up.

•Common things are discrepancies in your work history, questions about why you left your job, or if you had any income while filing. If that happens, you'll get a notice.

•3 weeks?? That's making me even more nervous. Have you tried calling them?

For what it's worth, Washington ESD has been pretty good about processing claims efficiently since they upgraded their systems. The 2-4 week timeframe is usually accurate. If you haven't heard anything by week 4, that's when I'd start getting more aggressive about contacting them.

•Okay that helps put things in perspective. I'll try to be more patient.

•Agreed - they're much better than they used to be. Just keep filing those weekly claims!

I was in the same boat last month. Filed on a Monday, got approved exactly 3 weeks later on a Wednesday. The money showed up in my account 2 days after that. It's nerve-wracking but try to stay positive.

•That timeline actually sounds pretty reasonable. Thanks for sharing your experience!

•No problem! The waiting is definitely the hardest part but it does eventually come through.

One thing I learned - if you're really struggling financially while waiting, see if you can apply for emergency assistance through DSHS. Sometimes they have programs to help bridge the gap.

•I didn't even know that was an option. I'll look into it, thanks!

•Yeah it's worth checking out. Food assistance and utility help can really make a difference while you're waiting.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing - I used them again last week when I had a question about my job search requirements. Got connected to someone at Washington ESD within like 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. Definitely worth it if you need to actually talk to someone.

•That's really helpful to know. I might try it if I don't hear something soon.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•It's not free but honestly after all the time I wasted trying to call myself, it was worth every penny.

Remember that even though the wait is stressful, Washington ESD has to verify your eligibility and work history. It's better for them to take the time to do it right than to rush and have issues later. Most people do get approved within that 2-4 week window.

•That's a good point. I'd rather wait a bit longer and have it done correctly.

•Exactly. Plus when you do get approved, you'll get all the back payments at once which is nice.

Just hang in there! I know it's scary when you're waiting for money you need, but the vast majority of eligible claims do get approved. Keep filing those weekly claims and try not to stress too much.

UPDATE: finally got through to someone at Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. turns out there was a small issue with my employer info but they fixed it on the spot. should see payment next week!

That's a perfect example of why it can be worth calling if you're past the 3-4 week mark. Sometimes there are small issues that can be resolved quickly once you get someone on the phone. The key is actually getting through to a person, which is where services like Claimyr can really help.

•Yeah I'm definitely going to try calling if I don't hear something by next week.

•That sounds like a good plan. You're still within the normal timeframe but better to be proactive.

I'm at 5 weeks now and still waiting. This is getting ridiculous. Filed in early December and here we are in January with nothing.

Ava Thompson
•5 weeks?! That seems way too long. Have you been able to get through to anyone?

Amina Diop
•Nope, can't get through no matter what I try. Starting to think about getting some help with calling.

•At 5 weeks you definitely need to get someone on the phone. That's beyond the normal processing time.

For anyone still waiting - I know it's hard but try to stay positive. The system works, it just takes time. And once you get approved, you'll get all that back pay which feels amazing after weeks of stress!

•Anytime! We all need support during times like this.

One more thing - make sure you're checking your Secure Access Washington account regularly. Sometimes Washington ESD will send you messages through there that you need to respond to, and if you miss them it can delay your claim.
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•Good point! I've been checking but haven't seen any messages yet.
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•That's good - means there probably aren't any issues with your claim.

Just wanted to add - if you're really struggling financially while waiting, don't be afraid to reach out to family or friends for help. Most people understand that unemployment takes time to kick in.

Ava Thompson
•Yeah I've had to do that a bit. It's embarrassing but necessary.

Yara Nassar
•Nothing embarrassing about it! That's what support systems are for.

Overall I'd say 2 weeks is totally normal. If you hit 4 weeks with no word, that's when you should definitely try to get someone on the phone. But for now, just keep doing what you're doing.

Ava Thompson
•That seems like a good rule of thumb. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Final thought - while you're waiting, it might be worth starting your job search activities if you haven't already. Washington ESD requires job search activities once you start receiving benefits, so getting a head start can't hurt.

Ava Thompson
•Good idea! I'll start logging my job search activities even though I'm not approved yet.
