How long for Washington ESD unemployment decision after filing claim?

I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 2 weeks ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My claim status just says 'under review' but doesn't give any timeline. I know they have to verify employment and all that but I'm starting to get anxious about bills piling up. Has anyone gotten their decision recently? How long did it take from when you first filed until you got approved or denied?

It really depends on your situation. If it's a straightforward layoff with no complications, usually 2-3 weeks. But if they need to verify anything or if there's an issue with your separation, it can take 6-8 weeks or more. Have you checked if there are any outstanding issues in your account?

I logged in and don't see any issues listed. Just says pending review. Should I be worried that it's taking this long?

0 coins

Two weeks isn't unusual, especially if they're busy. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - that's important.

0 coins

mine took 3 weeks last month, no issues just slow processing. keep checking every few days

0 coins

Did you get any notification when it was approved or did you just have to keep checking?

0 coins

got an email and letter in the mail the same day, so you'll know when it happens

The waiting is the worst part! I went through this last year and it took forever to get someone on the phone to check my status. Washington ESD's phone lines are absolutely horrible - I'd call hundreds of times and either get busy signals or get hung up on after waiting on hold for hours. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an agent in like 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved my sanity honestly.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Did they charge you a lot for it?

0 coins

It was worth every penny to actually talk to someone and get answers about my claim status. Way better than the endless busy signals.

0 coins

I might have to look into that if this drags on much longer. The not knowing is killing me.

0 coins

Washington ESD is SO SLOW right now. They're probably backed up from all the people who got laid off after the holidays. My friend filed in December and just heard back last week - took 5 weeks total!

0 coins

Five weeks?! That's crazy. I really hope mine doesn't take that long.

0 coins

The system is broken. They need more staff but refuse to hire people. Meanwhile we're all struggling to pay rent.

0 coins

Are you sure you submitted everything correctly? Sometimes if they're missing documents it can delay the whole process. Check your account to make sure all required forms were uploaded properly.

0 coins

I'm pretty sure I got everything but I'll double check. Is there a specific section where missing documents would show up?

0 coins

Look under 'Required Actions' or 'To Do Items' in your account. If there's nothing there, you should be good.

0 coins

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE! They make you jump through hoops and then take forever to process claims. Meanwhile bills don't stop coming. I've been waiting FOUR WEEKS and still nothing!

0 coins

I feel your pain. The stress of waiting is almost worse than being unemployed.

0 coins

Four weeks is getting into the range where you might want to contact them directly. Have you tried calling?

0 coins

TRIED CALLING?? I've called probably 200 times. Either busy or they hang up on me after 2 hours on hold.

0 coins

I work in HR and see this a lot. If your former employer is slow to respond to Washington ESD's verification requests, that can really delay things. The state has to wait for employer response before making a decision.

0 coins

Is there any way to contact my old employer to make sure they respond quickly?

0 coins

You can try, but honestly most employers just respond when they respond. Washington ESD will eventually make a decision even without employer input if they take too long.

0 coins

just keep filing weekly claims no matter what, even if your initial claim isn't approved yet

0 coins

Yeah I've been doing that. It feels weird filing when I don't even know if I'm approved yet.

0 coins

That's the right thing to do. If you miss weekly filings you can lose benefits even if your claim gets approved later.

0 coins

This reminds me of when I filed back in 2019. It took about 3 weeks but that was before COVID so maybe they're still dealing with backlogs. The key is to not panic - most people do get approved eventually if they're eligible.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear. I just wish they gave better updates on timing.

0 coins

The lack of communication is definitely frustrating. You basically just have to wait and check your account regularly.

0 coins

If you're really worried about the delay, I'd suggest trying to reach Washington ESD directly. I used Claimyr recently when my weekly claim got stuck and they got me through to an actual person who could explain what was happening. Much better than guessing.

0 coins

How does that service work exactly? Do they just help you get through the phone system?

0 coins

Yeah they basically handle all the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Way less stressful than doing it yourself.

0 coins

2 weeks is pretty normal actually. I think people forget that they have to process thousands of claims. As long as you don't have any red flags in your work history, you should be fine.

0 coins

What kind of red flags would cause delays? I was laid off due to budget cuts, nothing on my end.

0 coins

Layoffs are usually straightforward. Red flags would be more like getting fired for misconduct or quitting without good cause.

0 coins

same boat here, filed 10 days ago and still waiting. at least we're not alone in this

0 coins

Yeah it helps to know others are going through the same thing. Hopefully we both hear something soon.

0 coins

The waiting game is the worst part of unemployment. Hang in there everyone.

0 coins

I've heard that if you don't hear anything by 4 weeks you should definitely call or try to contact them somehow. That might indicate there's an issue that needs to be resolved.

0 coins

Good to know there's a timeline to watch for. I'll give it another week or two before I start panicking.

0 coins

If you do need to call them at that point, definitely consider using something like Claimyr. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through their phone system.

0 coins

The process has definitely gotten slower since COVID. They're dealing with way more claims than before and haven't really scaled up their staff to match. Patience is key but I know that's easier said than done when you need the money.

0 coins

That makes sense. I didn't think about how COVID might have permanently changed their workload.

0 coins

They need to hire more people then! We shouldn't have to suffer because they won't invest in proper staffing.

0 coins

hang in there! mine took exactly 3 weeks and 2 days, got approved last Friday

0 coins

That gives me hope! Did you get backpay for all the weeks you were waiting?

0 coins

yes, got paid for all the weekly claims I filed while waiting. make sure you keep filing those!

0 coins

I'm a former Washington ESD employee and I can tell you that 2-4 weeks is completely normal processing time. The system is designed to be thorough, which means it takes time. Most people who are eligible do get approved, it just requires patience.

0 coins

Thanks for the insider perspective! Is there anything I can do to speed up the process or do I just have to wait?

0 coins

Just make sure all your information is accurate and keep filing weekly claims. There's not much else you can do from your end to speed it up.

0 coins

Good to hear from someone who actually worked there. The lack of communication from Washington ESD makes everyone anxious.

0 coins

If it makes you feel any better, I'm at 3 weeks and still waiting too. My neighbor got approved after 4 weeks so there's still hope for both of us!

0 coins

Definitely helps to know I'm not the only one. Let's both keep checking and hopefully we'll get good news soon.

0 coins

I'll update this thread if I hear anything. Would be good to track how long it's actually taking people these days.

0 coins

The uncertainty is brutal but most people I know who were legitimately laid off did eventually get approved. Just try to stay positive and keep doing what you're supposed to do (filing weekly claims, job searching, etc.).

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. I've been doing all the required stuff so hopefully that pays off.

0 coins

Sounds like you're doing everything right. The system works, it's just slow. You'll get through this.

0 coins

Pro tip from someone who's been through this multiple times: if you haven't heard anything by week 4, that's when I'd use a service like Claimyr to actually get someone on the phone and check what's happening with your claim. Sometimes there are issues that don't show up in your online account.

0 coins

I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully it doesn't come to that but good to have a backup plan.

0 coins

Yeah I used them when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Found out there was a simple issue that got resolved once I talked to an actual person.

0 coins

Two weeks isn't that long in Washington ESD time unfortunately. I'd say give it another week or two before you start really worrying. The system is slow but it does work eventually.

0 coins

Alright, I'll try to be patient for a bit longer. Thanks everyone for the reality check on timing.

0 coins

You're handling this well. Keep filing those weekly claims and check your account regularly. You should hear something soon.
