How long after filing Washington ESD unemployment claim should I expect first payment?
Filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Thursday and I'm wondering what the typical timeline is for getting my first payment? I know there's a waiting week but I'm not sure if that starts from when I file or when they approve my claim. My claim status just shows 'under review' right now. I've been laid off from my retail job and really need to know when I can expect some income. Has anyone gone through this recently and can share their experience with how long the whole process took?

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks from filing to first payment if everything goes smoothly. The waiting week starts from your claim effective date, which should be the Sunday of the week you filed. So if you filed Thursday, your waiting week would start that previous Sunday. You'll need to file weekly claims even during the waiting week though.

•Thanks! So I should be filing weekly claims already even though my claim isn't approved yet?

•Yes, definitely file your weekly claims. You can't get paid for weeks you don't claim, even if your initial claim gets approved later.

mine took forever because they had to verify my employment history. took like 6 weeks total before i saw any money. hope yours goes faster than mine did

•6 weeks?? That's terrifying. Did they tell you why it took so long or did you have to keep calling to find out?

•had to call a bunch of times. kept getting told different things. finally got through to someone who explained they were waiting for my employer to respond to some verification request

The standard timeline is: 1 week waiting period + 1-2 weeks processing time = 2-3 weeks total to first payment. However, if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason (employment verification, quit vs layoff determination, etc.), it can take significantly longer. You should receive a determination letter within 7-10 days of filing that explains your benefit amount and any issues that need resolution.

•What would cause a claim to go into adjudication? I was laid off due to store closure, seems pretty straightforward.

Yuki Sato
•Even straightforward layoffs can trigger adjudication if there are questions about your work history, if you had any disciplinary actions, or if your employer contests the claim. Store closures are usually pretty clear-cut though.

•My claim got stuck in adjudication because I had worked two part-time jobs and they had to verify both. Took 4 extra weeks just for that.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me from spending hours on hold trying to get answers about my claim timeline.

•Is this legit? I've never heard of them before. Do they charge for this service?

Andre Dubois
•Yes it's legitimate. They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an agent. Much better than sitting on hold for hours. The demo video explains everything.

•I was skeptical too but ended up trying it when I couldn't get through to ESD for weeks. Actually worked and I got my claim issue resolved same day.

THE WAITING PERIOD IS RIDICULOUS! Why do they make people wait a whole week when we're already struggling financially?? It's like they want us to suffer even more. And then they take their sweet time processing everything while we're trying to figure out how to pay rent.

•I get the frustration but the waiting week has been a federal requirement for decades. Most states have it, not just Washington.

•Doesn't make it any less stupid. Other countries don't make people wait like this when they lose their jobs.

•The waiting week is supposed to encourage people to find work quickly rather than rely on benefits. Whether it actually works is debatable.

Just want to add that you need to make sure you're completing your job search activities even during the waiting week. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to log them in WorkSourceWA.com. Don't skip this or it could delay your payments later.

QuantumQueen
•Wait, I have to do job searches during the waiting week too? I thought that started after I was approved.
0 coins
Carmen Flores
•Yes, job search requirements start immediately. You need to register with WorkSource within 7 days of filing and start your job search activities right away.
0 coins
Yuki Sato
•Correct. The job search requirement begins with your first claimable week, which includes the waiting week. Keep detailed records of your search activities.

honestly the whole system is a mess. took me calling every single day for 2 weeks before i finally got through to someone who could tell me what was going on with my claim. they dont return calls, the website is confusing, and half the time the phone system just hangs up on you

•This is exactly what I'm worried about. How did you finally get through?

•kept calling first thing in the morning right when they opened. also tried that claimyr thing someone mentioned and it actually worked better than calling myself

One thing to keep in mind - even if your claim is approved quickly, you won't get paid for the waiting week until you exhaust your regular benefits or your claim year ends. So if you're eligible for 26 weeks of benefits, you'll actually receive 25 weeks of payments plus the waiting week payment at the very end.

QuantumQueen
•So I never get paid for that first week unless I use up all my benefits? That seems unfair.
0 coins
Aisha Rahman
•That's correct. The waiting week payment is held until the end of your benefit year. It's always been this way with Washington unemployment.

•Unless you find a job quickly and don't use all your benefits, then you lose that waiting week payment entirely. Another reason the system is frustrating.

Check your online account regularly for any notices or requests for additional information. Sometimes Washington ESD will ask for documents and if you don't respond quickly it can delay your whole claim. I almost missed a request for wage verification because I wasn't checking my messages.

•Good tip. Should I be checking daily or is there a notification system?
0 coins
CyberSamurai
•I'd check at least every other day. The notification system isn't great so don't rely on it to tell you when something new is posted.

If you're really worried about timing you could try calling but good luck getting through. I called 47 times in one day and never got past the busy signal. The phone system is completely overwhelmed.

QuantumQueen
•47 times in one day?? That's insane. There has to be a better way.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. They handle all the calling and waiting so you don't have to deal with that frustration.

•Yeah I saw your post about that. Might have to try it if I can't get through soon. Getting desperate here.

To summarize the timeline: Week 1 is your waiting week (no payment), Week 2-3 is processing time, so earliest payment would be Week 3 if everything goes smoothly. However, many claims take 4-6 weeks due to verification requirements or adjudication issues. Make sure you file weekly claims consistently and complete job search requirements from day one.

•This is really helpful, thank you. I'll make sure to stay on top of the weekly claims and job search stuff.

•Perfect summary. The key is being proactive about requirements even during the waiting period.

mine was approved in like 10 days but then took another 2 weeks for the first payment to actually hit my bank account. dont panic if the money doesnt show up immediately after approval

•Good to know! Did you get direct deposit or debit card?

•direct deposit. the debit card option might be faster but i already had my bank info set up

Also remember that your first payment will be for Week 2 of your claim (since Week 1 is the waiting week). So if you filed on Thursday, your first payable week would be the following Sunday-Saturday, and you'd file that weekly claim the Sunday after that. Payment timing can be confusing at first.
0 coins
QuantumQueen
•This is getting confusing. So I file weekly claims every Sunday for the previous week?
0 coins
Carmen Flores
•Exactly. Weekly claims are filed on Sunday for the week that just ended (Sunday-Saturday). Your first weekly claim would be filed the Sunday after your first full week.

Whatever you do, don't assume everything is fine just because you filed. Check your claim status regularly and respond to any requests immediately. I know too many people who missed important deadlines because they thought everything was automatic.

QuantumQueen
•How often should I check? Daily seems excessive but I don't want to miss anything important.

•I'd say every 2-3 days during the first few weeks, then weekly once things are established. Better safe than sorry.

The 2-3 week timeline assumes no complications. If you have any issues with your work history, reason for separation, or if your employer contests the claim, add several more weeks to that estimate. Best case scenario you get paid in 3 weeks, worst case could be 8+ weeks.

QuantumQueen
•8+ weeks would be devastating. Is there anything I can do to speed things up if issues arise?

•Respond to any requests for information immediately and completely. If you need to reach ESD about delays, try the services mentioned earlier or call during off-peak hours.

Just to follow up on the Claimyr recommendation - I used them again last week to check on a payment issue and got connected to an ESD agent within 15 minutes. Much better than the 3+ hour wait times I was experiencing calling directly. Worth checking out their demo video if you're struggling to get through.

Just remember that even after you start receiving payments, you still need to file weekly claims and meet job search requirements every week. Miss a weekly claim and you don't get paid for that week, period. The system doesn't automatically continue payments.
0 coins
QuantumQueen
•So if I forget to file one week I just lose that week's payment entirely?
0 coins
Dylan Cooper
•Unfortunately yes. There's no make-up option for missed weekly claims. Set a recurring reminder on your phone for Sunday mornings.

expect the worst hope for the best lol. took me 5 weeks to get my first payment and that was with no complications. the system is just slow and understaffed. at least once you start getting payments they come regularly
0 coins
QuantumQueen
•5 weeks even with no complications? That's longer than what others are saying.
0 coins
Sofia Perez
•yeah it varies a lot. some people get lucky and get paid in 2-3 weeks, others wait much longer. depends on workload and which office processes your claim

The key is patience and persistence. Keep filing weekly claims, keep doing job searches, and keep checking your online account. If you hit roadblocks, don't give up. The system works eventually but it's not fast or user-friendly.

•You're welcome. Remember that most claims do get approved eventually, it's just a matter of following the process correctly and being patient with the timeline.
