How long does it take to receive unemployment after filing with Washington ESD?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Friday and I'm wondering what the typical timeline is for receiving benefits. My employer laid me off due to budget cuts and I need to know when I can expect my first payment. I've been checking my account daily but it just shows 'claim under review.' Has anyone recently gone through this process? How long should I realistically expect to wait before seeing money in my account?

The standard timeline is usually 2-3 weeks for your first payment if there are no issues with your claim. Washington ESD needs time to verify your employment history and wages. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting - that's crucial.

•Thanks! I did file my first weekly claim yesterday. Should I keep doing that even though I haven't been approved yet?

•Yes absolutely, keep filing weekly claims. If you miss weeks you can't go back and claim them later.

Mine took almost 4 weeks because they had to do some kind of verification with my previous employer. The waiting is the worst part honestly.

•4 weeks?? That's terrifying. I can barely make it 2 weeks without income.

•I know the feeling. Try to call Washington ESD if you can get through, sometimes they can give you an update on what's causing the delay.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual person. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Never heard of this before. Is it legit or some kind of scam?

•It's legitimate, they just help you get through the phone queue. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when I needed to check on my adjudication status.

•I used Claimyr too when my claim got stuck. Much better than sitting on hold for hours only to get disconnected.

TOOK ME 6 WEEKS!!! Washington ESD is a complete disaster. They kept asking for the same documents over and over. I sent my separation notice 3 times before someone finally processed it.

CosmicCowboy
•Oh god, 6 weeks? What documents did they keep asking for?

Isabella Costa
•Separation notice, pay stubs, ID verification. Same stuff repeatedly. The system is broken.

•That sounds like you might have been in adjudication. That's different from the normal processing timeline.

If your claim is straightforward with no complications, 2-3 weeks is pretty accurate. The key factors are: clear separation reason, wages in Washington state, no employer disputes. Any complications add time.

CosmicCowboy
•What counts as complications? My layoff was pretty standard budget cuts.

•Budget cuts layoffs are usually straightforward. Complications would be things like misconduct allegations, wage disputes, or working in multiple states.

•That gives me hope! Did you have to do anything special or just wait?

One thing to remember - your first payment will include all the weeks you've been filing weekly claims for, so if it takes 3 weeks you'll get 3 weeks of benefits in that first payment. It's not like you lose those weeks.

•That's good to know! I was worried I'd only get one week's worth when it finally comes through.

•This is correct, they backdate to your initial claim date as long as you've been filing weekly.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Debit card payments can take an extra few days sometimes.

•I did set up direct deposit when I filed. Should I double check that information somewhere?

Javier Cruz
•Yeah you can verify it in your account settings on the Washington ESD website. Make sure the routing and account numbers are correct.

When I was dealing with a delayed claim, Claimyr really helped me get through to someone who could explain what was happening. Much better than playing phone tag with the automated system.

•Seems like a few people have mentioned this service. Might be worth looking into if I don't hear anything by next week.

•Honestly anything is better than their regular phone system. I must have called 200 times.

The pandemic really messed up their systems and they're still catching up. My cousin filed in December and got her first payment in 2.5 weeks, so things seem to be getting better.

•That's encouraging. I just need to be patient I guess.

•Yeah, and make sure you're doing your job search activities too. They check that stuff.

Check if your claim shows 'pending' or 'under review' - those mean different things. Pending usually means it's processing normally, under review might mean they need more info.

CosmicCowboy
•Mine says 'claim under review' - should I be worried about that?

Chloe Robinson
•Not necessarily worried, but you might want to check if they've sent you any requests for additional information in your correspondence.

•Good point - always check your online account for messages from Washington ESD.

I've been through this twice now (layoffs suck) and both times it was right around 3 weeks. The second time I knew what to expect so it wasn't as stressful.

CosmicCowboy
•Sorry you've had to go through it twice. Any other tips for a first-timer?

•Just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search log. And don't panic if it takes the full 3 weeks - that's normal.

whatever you do dont stop filing weekly claims!!! my friend made that mistake and lost like 2 weeks of benefits

•Good reminder! I'll make sure to keep filing even if nothing seems to be happening.

Since you're new to this, just wanted to mention again that if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim status, Claimyr can help you get through their phone system. I used it when I was in your exact situation.

•I'll keep that in mind if I need to call them. Thanks for the recommendation.

•Seconding Claimyr - saved me so much frustration when I needed to resolve an issue with my claim.

The waiting is definitely the hardest part. I remember checking my account like 10 times a day when I was waiting for my first payment. Try to distract yourself and just check once a day max.
0 coins
CosmicCowboy
•Easier said than done! I'm already obsessively checking multiple times per day.

•I totally get it. The financial stress makes everything worse. Just remember that it will come through.

Make sure you understand the difference between your waiting week and processing time. Washington ESD doesn't have a waiting week anymore, so you should get paid for your first week of unemployment once approved.
0 coins
CosmicCowboy
•That's good to know. I was confused about whether there was a waiting period.
0 coins
Zara Mirza
•They eliminated the waiting week a few years ago. So once you're approved, you get paid for all eligible weeks.

Been there! The uncertainty is brutal. But honestly most people get their first payment within that 2-3 week window. Hang in there!

•Thanks for the encouragement. I'm trying to stay positive about it.

•You got this. Just focus on your job search in the meantime and keep filing those weekly claims.

Quick question - did you get a confirmation number when you filed your initial claim? That's usually a good sign that it went through properly.
0 coins
CosmicCowboy
•Yes I did get a confirmation number and it shows up in my account. So I think it went through okay.

Nia Harris
•Perfect, that means your claim is in the system. Now it's just the waiting game.

One more thing - if you worked for a large company, sometimes their HR department can cause delays if they don't respond quickly to Washington ESD's requests for information. But budget cut layoffs are usually pretty clear-cut.

CosmicCowboy
•It was a mid-size tech company. Hopefully they'll respond quickly if Washington ESD contacts them.

•Tech companies are usually pretty good about responding to unemployment claims. You should be fine.

Final thought - set up alerts on your bank account so you know immediately when the payment hits. That first payment notification is such a relief!

•Great idea! I'll set that up today. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice.

•Good luck! Remember to keep filing those weekly claims and you should see your first payment within the next week or two.
