How long for Washington ESD unemployment benefits to kick in after filing?
Just filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes for unemployment benefits to actually start coming through? My former employer laid me off due to budget cuts and I need to know when I can expect my first payment. I've been checking my account on the secure portal but it just shows 'claim processing' status. Should I be worried if it's been over a week already?

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks for Washington ESD to process your initial claim. The first week is always unpaid (waiting week), then if everything goes smoothly you should see payments start in week 3. But that's assuming no adjudication issues come up.

•Thanks! What kind of adjudication issues are we talking about? I reported everything accurately on my application.

•Could be anything - they might need to verify your separation reason with your employer, or check your work history. Sometimes it's random quality control stuff too.

Mine took 4 weeks because they had to do an adjudication review. Washington ESD has to contact your former employer to verify the layoff details. If your employer doesn't respond quickly, it delays everything.

•Did you get back pay for the weeks while it was being reviewed?

•Yes, once approved I got all the back weeks paid out in one lump sum. Just had to keep filing my weekly claims even while it was pending.

•That's key - you HAVE to keep filing those weekly claims or you lose those weeks even if you get approved later.

If you're having trouble getting through to check on your claim status, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach a live agent at Washington ESD. They have this system that gets you through the phone queues. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to our own state agency.

•I hear you on that frustration, but honestly it was worth it to get actual answers about my claim instead of just wondering and waiting. The peace of mind was huge.

•I might try this if my claim gets stuck. The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely brutal to deal with.

The key thing is making sure you're filing your weekly claims every week, even while your initial claim is processing. Log into your account and look for the 'Submit Weekly Claim' option. You need to do this every week to get paid for that week once your claim is approved.

•I see that option but wasn't sure if I should file weekly claims before my initial claim was approved. Good to know I should be doing them.

•Definitely start filing them now. Even if your claim is still processing, you want to establish those weekly claims so you don't lose any weeks of benefits.

Been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing from Washington ESD. This is ridiculous - I have bills to pay! Why does everything with unemployment take forever?

•3 weeks isn't unusual unfortunately. If there are any complications with your employer verification it can stretch longer. Have you tried calling to check your status?

•Tried calling dozens of times, just get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold for 2 hours. The system is completely broken.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - the regular phone system at Washington ESD is nearly impossible to get through on your own.

Important reminder - Washington ESD has a one-week waiting period for all claims. So even if your claim is approved immediately, you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment. Your benefit payments start with week 2 if everything processes smoothly.

•Wait, so even if I file immediately after getting laid off, I just lose that first week of benefits entirely?

Caden Nguyen
•Correct - the waiting week is unpaid. It's Washington state law. You still need to file a weekly claim for that week, you just won't receive payment for it.

•That's such BS. Like people getting laid off don't need money right away...

Pro tip: Make sure you have direct deposit set up in your account. Paper checks take forever to arrive and can get lost in the mail. Electronic payments hit your account much faster once Washington ESD approves your claim.

•Good point! I did set up direct deposit when I filed. How long does it usually take for the money to show up in your account?

•Usually 1-2 business days after Washington ESD processes your weekly claim. Much better than waiting a week or more for a check.

Just a heads up - you'll also need to start doing your job search activities right away. Washington ESD requires 3 job search contacts per week. Keep track of everything because they can audit your job search log at any time.

•Is there a specific way I need to document the job searches? Like do I need to keep proof?

Alexis Robinson
•Yes, keep detailed records - company name, contact person, date, method of contact. You can use WorkSourceWA to track everything officially.

•And make sure they're genuine job search efforts, not just random applications. Washington ESD will verify if they audit you.

mine took 2.5 weeks total from filing to first payment, no issues with the claim. just had to be patient and keep filing weekly claims like everyone said.

•That's reassuring to hear! Hopefully mine processes that smoothly too.

•Yeah if it's a straightforward layoff with no complications, Washington ESD usually processes pretty quickly.

One thing that can speed things up is making sure your employer responds quickly to Washington ESD's verification requests. If you're on good terms with HR, you might mention that Washington ESD will be contacting them about your claim.

Mia Rodriguez
•That's a great idea! I'll send my former HR manager a heads up email so they know to expect the contact from Washington ESD.

•Smart move. Employer delays are one of the biggest reasons claims get held up in adjudication.

Check your account online regularly but don't panic if the status doesn't change for a while. Washington ESD's system doesn't always update in real time. Sometimes your payment processes before the website even shows your claim as approved.

•Good to know! I've been checking like 5 times a day and getting worried when nothing changes.

•Ha, we've all been there! Once a day is plenty unless you get a notification that something changed.

If your claim does get stuck in adjudication, don't just wait around hoping. Call Washington ESD to find out what specific information they need. Sometimes it's something simple that can be resolved quickly.

•Good luck getting through on the phone though. I've been trying for days with no success.

•That's where Claimyr really helped me out. Worth checking out if you keep hitting dead ends with the regular phone system.

Also remember that once your benefits start, you'll get paid for the current week you're filing for, not the previous week. So if you file your weekly claim on Sunday, you're claiming benefits for the week ending that Saturday.

Mia Rodriguez
•That timing always confuses me. So if I file this Sunday, I'm claiming for this past week?
0 coins
Katherine Harris
•Exactly. Each weekly claim covers the week that just ended, from Sunday to Saturday.

Don't forget to report any work you do, even small part-time jobs or gig work. Washington ESD can reduce your benefits instead of cutting you off entirely if you earn a little money, but you have to report it honestly.

•What happens if I forget to report some work? Can I go back and fix it?

•You can usually call and make corrections, but it's much easier to just report everything accurately from the start. Honesty is always the best policy with Washington ESD.

In my experience, if there are no red flags with your claim, you should see your first payment within 3 weeks of filing. The system works pretty well when everything is straightforward.
