When does unemployment pay start after filing with Washington ESD?
I just filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD yesterday and I'm wondering when I can expect my first payment to come through. My employer laid me off two weeks ago and I'm already behind on bills. The website says my claim is processing but doesn't give me any timeline for when payments actually start. Does anyone know how long it typically takes from filing to getting your first unemployment check? I'm really stressed about making rent next week.

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file to get your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your claim. You'll need to file your weekly claims during this time too - don't forget to do those every week even while waiting for approval.

•Thanks! I already filed my first weekly claim this week. Should I keep doing them even if my claim isn't approved yet?

•Yes, definitely keep filing weekly claims. If you miss any weeks, you could lose benefits for those periods even after your claim gets approved.

Mine took almost 4 weeks because they had to verify my employment history. Washington ESD is pretty backed up right now so don't panic if it takes longer than expected.

•Did they contact you about the verification or did you just have to wait?

•They sent me a letter asking for pay stubs and my former employer had to confirm some details. It was a pain but eventually got sorted out.

The waiting period is called the 'waiting week' and it's built into the system. Your first payable week is actually the second week you file a weekly claim. So even if everything goes smoothly, you won't see money for at least 2 weeks from filing.

•Wait, so there's a whole week where you don't get paid even if you qualify? That seems really unfair when people are already struggling.

•Unfortunately yes, that's how Washington ESD structures it. The first week is unpaid but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly the time saved not having to redial constantly made it worthwhile for me. I was able to get my claim status cleared up in one call instead of trying for days.

•I've heard of services like this but never tried one. Did they actually get you to a real person at Washington ESD?

•Yeah, connected me to an actual Washington ESD representative who could look up my account and explain what was holding up my claim.

ugh the whole system is so slow, I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't seen a dime. meanwhile my landlord is breathing down my neck

•That's exactly what I'm worried about! Have you tried calling to see what's going on?

•tried calling like 50 times, always busy or they hang up on me after being on hold forever

Make sure you're checking your SecureAccess Washington account regularly. Sometimes they need additional information and you'll get a notice there before they mail you anything. Missing those requests can delay your payments significantly.

•Good point, I'll check that daily. Is there anything specific I should be looking for?

•Look for any alerts or messages in your inbox, and make sure your claim status doesn't show 'adjudication' or 'pending' without explanation.

The timing also depends on how you set up your payment method. Direct deposit is faster than waiting for a check in the mail. If you haven't set up direct deposit yet, do it ASAP.

Isabella Ferreira
•I did set up direct deposit when I filed. How much faster is it usually?

Anastasia Popov
•Direct deposit usually hits your account within 2-3 business days after Washington ESD processes your weekly claim. Checks can take a week or more to arrive by mail.

What if your claim gets denied? Do you have to start the whole process over again or can you appeal?
0 coins
Freya Nielsen
•You can appeal a denial within 30 days. The appeal process adds more time though - can take several weeks or even months to resolve.

Omar Mahmoud
•Months?! That's insane when people need money to live.

I'm in week 3 of waiting and getting really anxious. My claim shows 'processing' but no other details. Should I be worried something's wrong?

•Three weeks isn't unusual, especially if this is your first claim or if there are any complications with your work history. Keep filing weekly claims and be patient.

•I keep checking the website obsessively but it never changes. This waiting is killing me.

Pro tip: if your claim is taking longer than expected, it might be because of job search requirements. Make sure you're logging your job search activities if that's required for your claim type.

Isabella Ferreira
•Wait, do I need to be job searching while my claim is still processing? Nobody told me that.

Zara Khan
•It depends on your situation, but generally yes. Check your claim details for specific requirements. You might need to log job search activities in WorkSourceWA.

The system is totally broken. I know people who waited 6+ weeks for their first payment and then got a lump sum for all the back weeks. Washington ESD needs to get their act together.

•Six weeks?! I can't wait that long. There has to be a way to speed this up.

•Unfortunately there's not much you can do except keep filing weekly claims and try to get through to someone on the phone to check your status.

For anyone struggling to get through to Washington ESD by phone, I mentioned Claimyr earlier but wanted to add that it really did help me get answers about my payment timeline. Sometimes just knowing what's happening with your claim can reduce the stress even if you still have to wait.

•I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. The not knowing is worse than the waiting.

•That's exactly how I felt. At least after talking to an agent I knew my claim was progressing normally and approximately when to expect payment.

Just want to share some hope - my payment finally came through today after 3.5 weeks of waiting. It was direct deposited overnight and included payment for all the weeks I had filed. Hang in there everyone!

Isabella Ferreira
•That's so encouraging! Did you get any advance notice that it was coming or did it just appear?

•My claim status changed to 'paid' on the website the day before the deposit hit my account. So keep checking your SecureAccess portal!

One thing that delayed my payments was not completing the initial claim properly. Make sure you answered all questions thoroughly and uploaded any required documents. Incomplete claims get flagged for manual review.

Isabella Ferreira
•How do I know if my claim was incomplete? Is there a way to check?

•Log into your SecureAccess account and look for any outstanding issues or document requests. If everything looks complete and you're still waiting, it's probably just processing time.

the worst part is having to file weekly claims when you don't even know if you qualify yet. feels like busy work when you're stressed about money

Freya Nielsen
•I understand the frustration, but those weekly claims are crucial. If you don't file them, you lose eligibility for those weeks even after your claim is approved.

•yeah I know, just wish the system was more transparent about what's happening behind the scenes

For budgeting purposes, remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or you'll owe them when you file your tax return. Just something to keep in mind when planning your finances.

Isabella Ferreira
•Oh wow, I didn't even think about taxes. Thanks for the heads up!

•You can set up tax withholding when you file your weekly claims. It's usually 10% federal tax withholding.

Been through this process twice now. First time took 2 weeks, second time took 4 weeks. Seems pretty random how long it takes. Just keep filing weekly claims and eventually the money will come through.

Isabella Ferreira
•What made the difference between 2 weeks and 4 weeks the second time?

Yuki Sato
•Not sure honestly. Different employer maybe? Or just different processing times. The system seems inconsistent.

If you're really struggling financially while waiting, some local churches and community organizations have emergency assistance programs. Not unemployment related but might help with immediate needs like food or utilities.

Isabella Ferreira
•That's really helpful, thank you. I might need to look into that if this takes much longer.

•211 is a good resource to call for local assistance programs. They can connect you with food banks, utility assistance, etc.

Just wanted to update everyone - I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and finally got through to Washington ESD. Turns out my claim was held up because of a simple address verification issue. Agent fixed it in 5 minutes and said my payment should process this week. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person!

Isabella Ferreira
•That's amazing! I'm definitely going to check out Claimyr. How long did it take them to connect you?
0 coins
Andre Dubois
•They got me connected within about 20 minutes. Way better than the hours I spent trying to call on my own and getting nowhere.

•Address verification issue? I wonder if that's what's holding up my claim too. I moved recently and wasn't sure if I updated everything correctly.

To summarize for the original poster: expect 2-4 weeks from filing to first payment, keep filing weekly claims even while waiting, check your SecureAccess account regularly for updates, and consider using a service like Claimyr if you need to speak with an agent about your specific situation. The waiting is stressful but most claims do get processed eventually.
