How long does it take to get my first unemployment check from Washington ESD?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering when I can expect to receive my first payment. I completed all the required steps online and submitted my job separation information. My account shows the claim is processing but doesn't give me any timeline. I'm getting stressed about bills coming due and need to know if I should expect payment this week or if it takes longer. Has anyone recently gone through this process and can tell me what to expect?

Typically takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file your claim to get your first payment, assuming there are no issues. You also need to make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week starting the week after you file your initial claim. If Washington ESD needs to verify anything about your employment or separation, it could take longer.

•Thanks! I did file my first weekly claim on Sunday. Should I keep filing them even if my claim is still processing?

•Yes, definitely keep filing your weekly claims. If you miss filing them, you could lose those weeks of benefits even after your claim gets approved.

It really depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. Mine was straightforward and I got paid exactly 14 days after filing. But my friend's claim got flagged for some reason and she had to wait almost 6 weeks.

•How do you know if your claim is in adjudication? My account just says 'processing' but doesn't give details.

•If it's in adjudication, it will usually say that specifically on your account. Processing just means they're reviewing it initially.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when my payment was delayed. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. They have this video demo that shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Might be worth checking out if you run into issues and need to talk to someone.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that. Is it legit or one of those scam services?

•It's totally legitimate. They don't ask for any personal info, just help you get through to Washington ESD's phone system faster. I was skeptical too but it actually worked.

•I used Claimyr too when my claim got stuck. Worth every penny to actually talk to a human at Washington ESD instead of getting the runaround.

Make sure you're doing your job search activities too! Washington ESD requires you to look for work and keep a log. If you don't do this, they can deny your benefits even if everything else is correct.

•How many job contacts do I need to make per week? The website wasn't super clear about this.

•You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, or networking events. Keep detailed records!

•Have you tried calling to check on your claim status? Three weeks seems long for a straightforward claim.

•tried calling like 50 times, always busy or they hang up on me after an hour on hold

The Washington ESD system is so frustrating. I swear they make it complicated on purpose to discourage people from claiming benefits. Back in my day unemployment was handled by actual humans who cared about helping people.

•I mean, the online system is actually pretty convenient once you figure it out. Better than having to go to an office in person.

•Maybe for you young folks who grew up with computers. Some of us need to talk to real people to get things sorted out.

Just wanted to update everyone - I got my first payment deposited today! It was exactly 16 days from when I filed my initial claim. So hang in there if you're still waiting.

•That's awesome! Was it for multiple weeks or just one week?

Ethan Taylor
•It was for two weeks - my waiting week didn't count but I got paid for the two weekly claims I filed after that.

Don't forget about the waiting week! Washington ESD doesn't pay you for your first week of unemployment, so your first payment will actually be for your second week of claims.

•Yeah I noticed that on my payment. Good to know that's normal and not an error.

For anyone still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about delayed payments, I really can't recommend Claimyr enough. I was going crazy trying to reach them on my own and this service got me connected immediately. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already tight on money waiting for my unemployment.

•It's way cheaper than the time and stress of trying to get through on your own. Plus if it helps resolve a payment issue faster, it pays for itself.

Also make sure your direct deposit information is correct in your account! My friend had the wrong bank account number and her payment got delayed by another week while they sorted it out.

•Good point! I double-checked mine right after filing and it was correct.

The key is to file your weekly claims on time every week, even if your initial claim is still processing. I made that mistake and lost two weeks of benefits because I thought I should wait until my claim was approved.

•That's exactly what I was worried about! Good thing I kept filing them.

•This is really important - always file your weekly claims by the deadline, regardless of your claim status.

Mine took forever because they had to verify my wages with my previous employer. Apparently some companies are slow to respond to Washington ESD requests. If your employer doesn't respond quickly, that can delay everything.

Ethan Taylor
•How do you know if that's what's causing the delay? Does it show up somewhere in your account?

Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•Washington ESD sent me a letter explaining they were waiting for wage verification. Check your messages in your online account regularly.

•Easy to say be patient when you're not the one waiting for money to pay rent!

If anyone runs into issues where their claim seems stuck, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used it when my claim went into adjudication and the agent was able to explain exactly what was happening and how long it would take. Made such a difference to actually talk to someone who knew what they were talking about.

•Did they help resolve your adjudication faster or just explain what was happening?

•They couldn't speed up the process but knowing what was going on and having a timeline really reduced my stress level. Plus they helped me make sure I was doing everything correctly on my end.

Also remember that if you have any separation issues like being fired or quitting, that will likely trigger adjudication which adds several weeks to the process. Washington ESD has to investigate to make sure you're eligible for benefits.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

•Layoffs are usually pretty straightforward, so you should be fine. It's voluntary quits and terminations for cause that cause problems.

The whole system needs an overhaul if you ask me. Taking weeks to process a claim when people need money immediately is just cruel. Other states manage to do it faster.

Yuki Ito
•Washington actually processes claims faster than many states. The issue is usually when claims need manual review for eligibility questions.

•Maybe so but when you're broke and waiting for help, any delay feels like forever.

Pro tip: set up text alerts in your Washington ESD account so you get notified when your payment is processed. Saves you from constantly checking your account.

•Great idea! I didn't know that was an option. I'll set that up right now.

Just remember that even after your payment is processed, it can take 1-2 business days to actually show up in your bank account if you have direct deposit set up.

Ethan Taylor
•Mine showed up the next day after Washington ESD processed it, so that was pretty quick.

One last plug for anyone still struggling to reach Washington ESD - that Claimyr service (claimyr.com) really is a game changer. The peace of mind from actually talking to someone who can check your claim status is worth it. They show you exactly how it works in their demo video too.
