How long does it take to start receiving unemployment benefits after filing Washington ESD claim?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it usually takes before you actually start getting payments? I lost my job at a warehouse two weeks ago and I'm already starting to stress about rent next month. My claim shows as 'pending' on the website but doesn't give me any timeline. I know I have to do the weekly claims but when do the actual payments start coming? Has anyone gone through this recently and can tell me what to expect?

Generally takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file your initial claim to receive your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your claim. You'll need to complete your weekly claims during this time. The first week is typically a waiting week that you won't get paid for, then it takes a few business days for the payment to process after your claim is approved.

•Thanks! So even if my claim gets approved quickly, I'm still looking at almost a month before getting money?

•Unfortunately yes, that's pretty typical. The waiting week plus processing time means it's usually 3-4 weeks total from job loss to first payment.

Mine took exactly 18 days from filing to getting my first deposit. But that was back in March and I didn't have any complications with my claim. Make sure you're doing your weekly claims every week even while you're waiting - you can't get paid for weeks you don't claim.

•18 days is pretty fast! Mine took almost 6 weeks because they had to verify my employment history.

•Good to know about the weekly claims - I've been doing those. Hopefully mine goes as smooth as yours did.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped when I was stuck waiting and needed answers about my claim.

•How much does that cost? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days and keep getting hung up on.

•It's worth it to get through when you really need to talk to someone. Way better than spending hours trying to call and getting nowhere.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, you could be waiting 6-8 weeks or even longer. They're still pretty backlogged with adjudication cases. Fingers crossed yours stays simple!

•What would cause it to go into adjudication? I was laid off, not fired, so I thought it would be straightforward.

•Lots of things can trigger it - if they need to verify your wages, if there's any question about why you lost your job, if you had any gaps in employment. Even simple stuff sometimes gets flagged.

•Layoffs are usually pretty straightforward, but sometimes they still verify with your employer just to confirm the circumstances.

Make sure you're actively job searching and logging it in WorkSourceWA starting right away. You need 3 job search activities per week and they can ask for your log at any time. Don't wait until you start getting paid to begin your job search requirements.

•Oh I didn't know about WorkSourceWA - where do I find that?

•Go to worksourcewa.com and create an account. You'll need to log all your job search activities there - applications, networking, job fairs, etc.

The system is so messed up. I filed in January and didn't get my first payment until March because they kept asking for more documentation. Every time I sent what they wanted, they'd ask for something else. Took forever to get anyone on the phone to explain what was happening.

•That's awful! Did you eventually get back pay for all those weeks?

•Yeah I got back pay but it was such a stressful couple months not knowing what was going on.

I used Claimyr when I was having issues getting through to Washington ESD about my delayed payments. Worked great - got connected to an agent within minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. Really saved me when I was panicking about my claim being stuck.

•Did they actually help resolve your issue or just get you through to someone?

•They got me connected to an agent who was able to see what was holding up my claim and pushed it through. Definitely worth it when you're stuck.

Keep checking your account every day and make sure you respond immediately to any requests for information. The faster you respond, the faster your claim moves through the system. Also set up direct deposit if you haven't already - payments come faster than checks.

•Good advice! I did set up direct deposit when I filed. How often should I be checking my account?

•I checked mine every morning just to see if there were any updates or requests for info. Better to catch things early than miss something and have your claim delayed.

Just be patient, it takes time but it will come. I know it's stressful when you're worried about bills but the system does work, just slowly. Make sure you keep doing everything you're supposed to do and your money will eventually show up.

•Easy to say be patient when you're not the one worried about rent!

•I've been there too, I know it's hard. Just trying to reassure that it does eventually come through.

My advice is to treat this like a full time job - file your weekly claims exactly on time, respond to any requests immediately, keep detailed records of everything, and stay on top of your job search. The more organized you are, the smoother things go.

•That's a good way to think about it. I'll definitely stay on top of everything and keep good records.

•Absolutely this! I keep a folder with copies of everything I submit and screenshots of my weekly claims.

Whatever you do, don't miss filing a weekly claim. Even if you haven't been approved yet, you need to file every single week or you lose those weeks permanently. I learned that the hard way and lost 2 weeks of benefits.

•Thanks for the warning! I've been filing every Sunday so I think I'm good on that front.

•Yep, Sunday is the typical day most people file. Just set a reminder so you never forget.

If your claim is taking longer than expected, you can try using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD faster. I was stuck waiting for weeks with no updates and used their service to finally talk to someone who could tell me what was going on. Way better than the endless busy signals.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Right now everything seems to be moving along normally.

•Good to have that as backup. The phone system is definitely the worst part of dealing with Washington ESD.
