How long does it usually take to get unemployment benefits approved in Washington?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website last week and I'm wondering what the typical timeline is for getting approved and receiving my first payment. I've been laid off from my job at a manufacturing company and really need to know when I can expect some income coming in. My claim status just shows 'under review' right now. For those who have been through this process recently, how long did it take from filing to actually getting your first unemployment check?

It really depends on whether your claim needs adjudication or not. If it's straightforward with no issues, you might see your first payment in 2-3 weeks after filing. But if Washington ESD needs to investigate anything about your separation from work, it could take 4-6 weeks or longer.

•What would cause them to need to investigate? I was laid off due to company downsizing, nothing complicated.

•Layoffs are usually pretty straightforward. They might just need to verify the details with your employer, which shouldn't take too long.

I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't gotten anything. My claim went into adjudication and I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to find out what's happening. The phone lines are always busy.

•Have you tried calling right when they open at 8am? That's usually your best bet for getting through.

•Yeah I've tried that multiple times. Either busy signal or I get disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

Mine took exactly 2 weeks from filing to first payment, but that was back in September. I think they're processing claims faster now than they were during the worst of the backlog.

•That's encouraging! Did you have to do anything special or did it just process automatically?

•Just filed online and kept filing my weekly claims. No issues with my separation so it went through without adjudication.

Don't forget you need to be doing your job search activities right away even before you get approved. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you need to log them in your WorkSourceWA account.

•Good point, I already set up my WorkSourceWA account. Do I need to do job searches for the weeks before I get approved too?

•Yes, you need to do job searches for every week you're claiming benefits, even if the claim is still processing.

•Same here, it's frustrating when you're counting on that money to pay bills.

•exactly! and trying to call them is impossible. they really need to fix their phone system

The official timeline from Washington ESD is 2-3 weeks for straightforward claims, but in reality it often takes longer. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial determination. You can't get paid for weeks you don't claim.

•I've been filing weekly like they told me to. Should I be worried if it takes longer than 3 weeks?

Anastasia Fedorov
•Not necessarily worried, but you might want to try contacting them if it goes much past 4 weeks with no update.

My cousin just got approved last month and it took 6 weeks! Her claim got stuck in some kind of review process and she couldn't get anyone to tell her why.

CosmicCruiser
•That's awful. Did she eventually get back pay for all those weeks?

Mateo Hernandez
•Yeah she got all her back pay once it was approved, but 6 weeks without income was really tough.

I work at a temp agency and see people go through this all the time. If you were laid off it should be pretty quick, maybe 2-3 weeks. But if you were fired or quit, expect longer delays while they investigate.

•Good to know, mine was definitely a layoff so hopefully it won't take too long.

•You should be fine then. Just keep filing those weekly claims and doing your job searches.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my account like 10 times a day waiting for my claim status to change from 'under review' to 'approved'.

•Lol I'm doing the same thing right now! Obsessively checking my eServices account.

•It's so nerve-wracking when you need the money. At least once it's approved the weekly payments come pretty regularly.

Pro tip: if your claim does get held up and you need to talk to someone, I used this service called Claimyr that got me through to a Washington ESD rep in about 20 minutes. Way better than trying to call yourself and waiting on hold forever.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true.

•Yeah it's real, they just handle the calling for you. Check out their site at claimyr.com if you're curious.

Mine took 4 weeks exactly. No issues with my employer or anything, just standard processing time I guess. The key is to not panic if it takes a while.

•Yeah just keep doing what you're supposed to do and it'll come through eventually.

Make sure all your information is correct on your application. I had a typo in my social security number that delayed my claim by 2 weeks while they sorted it out.

•How did you fix that? Did you have to call or could you do it online?

•I had to call to get it corrected. Took forever to get through but they fixed it pretty quickly once I talked to someone.

I've been through this process twice now and both times it took about 3 weeks. First time was in 2022 and second time was this past summer. Seems pretty consistent if there are no complications.

For what it's worth, I got my first payment exactly 2 weeks after filing. But I know others who waited much longer. It really seems to vary by case.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN. I waited 8 weeks for my claim to get approved and Washington ESD gave me the runaround the whole time. They kept saying 'it's processing' but never told me what the actual problem was.

NebulaNinja
•8 weeks?? That's insane. Did you eventually get all your back pay?

•Yeah I got the back pay but by then I was already behind on rent and bills. The whole thing was a nightmare.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr when my claim got stuck. Sometimes you just need to actually talk to someone who can look at your account and tell you what's going on.

I think the current average is probably around 3-4 weeks based on what I've seen in other forums and from friends who've filed recently. But definitely keep filing weekly even while you wait.

Omar Fawaz
•Yeah I'm definitely going to keep filing weekly. Thanks for the realistic timeline estimate.

•No problem! The waiting is stressful but most people do get approved eventually.

Don't forget about the waiting week! Even after you get approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you get your first payment. So factor that in too.
0 coins
Omar Fawaz
•Oh I didn't know about that. So even if I get approved in 2-3 weeks, I won't see money for another week after that?
0 coins
Sofia Morales
•That's how it used to work, but I think they eliminated the waiting week during COVID and haven't brought it back. Double check the Washington ESD website to be sure.

Anastasia Fedorov
•Correct, there's no waiting week currently in Washington state. You can get paid for your first week if approved.

My advice is to just try to stay busy with job searching and other stuff while you wait. Constantly checking the status will just drive you crazy and it won't make it go any faster.

•Easier said than done when you're stressed about money, but try to focus on things you can control like your job search.

Based on everything I've read here and elsewhere, seems like 2-4 weeks is the normal range for most people, with some outliers taking longer if there are complications. Just be patient and keep doing what you're supposed to do.
