How long does it take for you to get approved for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I submitted my Washington ESD unemployment application online about 10 days ago and I'm still waiting to hear back. My claim status just says 'under review' and I have no idea what that means or how much longer this will take. I lost my job at a manufacturing plant and really need to know when I can expect my first payment. Does anyone know the typical timeline for getting approved? I've never filed for unemployment before so I'm not sure what's normal.

The initial review process for Washington ESD typically takes 2-3 weeks for straightforward cases. Since you're at 10 days, you're probably about halfway through the normal timeline. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval - you can't get paid for weeks you don't claim.

•Thanks for the info! I've been doing my weekly claims but wasn't sure if I should. Good to know I'm on track.

•This is exactly right - keep filing those weekly claims or you'll lose those weeks even if you get approved later.

It really depends on your situation. If there are no red flags in your application, 2-3 weeks is normal. But if they need to verify anything with your employer or if there's any question about why you left your job, it can take much longer. Did you quit or were you laid off?

Javier Gomez
•I was laid off due to budget cuts, so hopefully that's straightforward. They eliminated my entire department.

Isabella Oliveira
•That should be pretty clear cut then. Layoffs due to lack of work are usually approved without much delay.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to check on my claim status but can never get through. The phone system is completely overwhelmed. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. How does it work exactly?

Freya Larsen
•It basically handles the calling and waiting for you, then connects you when an agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold all day.

The whole system is a joke. I waited 6 weeks for my approval and that was for a simple layoff situation. Washington ESD is completely understaffed and they don't care how long people wait.

Javier Gomez
•6 weeks?! That's crazy. Did you ever find out why it took so long?

•Never got a real explanation. They just kept saying it was 'in process' whenever I managed to get through to someone.

•That's definitely longer than normal. There might have been some complication in your case that caused the delay.

Make sure your employer information is accurate on your application. I had to wait an extra 3 weeks because there was a small error in my former employer's address and they couldn't verify my employment right away.

Javier Gomez
•Good point, I'll double check that. How did you find out there was an error?

•I finally got through to someone on the phone and they told me. Wish they had contacted me sooner about it.

The 'under review' status usually means they're doing the standard verification process. They check with your employer, verify your wages, and make sure you meet all the eligibility requirements. It's mostly automated but can take time.

Javier Gomez
•That makes sense. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?
0 coins
Malik Thomas
•Not really, just make sure all your information was accurate when you applied. The process pretty much runs on its own timeline.

•You can try calling but good luck getting through. The wait times are insane.

I applied 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. Starting to panic about paying rent next month. This is taking way too long.

•3 weeks is getting into the longer side but not unheard of. Have you checked your account online to see if there are any issues that need to be resolved?

Diego Flores
•Nothing shows up that I need to do. It just says pending review like the OP.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr to get through to an agent. Sometimes there are issues they don't show you online and you need to talk to someone to find out what's really going on.

Just remember that even after you're approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before your first payment. So if you get approved at the 3-week mark, you might not see money until week 4 or 5.

Javier Gomez
•Wait, there's a waiting period even after approval? I thought once you were approved the payments would start right away.

Isabella Oliveira
•Yeah, it's called the waiting week. It's built into the system - you don't get paid for your first week of unemployment.

Mine took exactly 15 days from application to approval. Pretty much right in the middle of what everyone says is normal. The hardest part was just waiting and not knowing.

Javier Gomez
•That gives me hope! Did you get any updates along the way or did it just suddenly change to approved?

Sean Murphy
•It just switched to approved one day when I checked online. No advance notice or anything.

The timeline can vary a lot depending on how busy they are. During peak periods like after mass layoffs, everything takes longer. But 2-3 weeks is the standard they try to meet.

Javier Gomez
•Makes sense. I wonder if the manufacturing layoffs in our area are causing delays since a lot of people probably applied around the same time I did.
0 coins
StarStrider
•That's very possible. When there's a big employer layoff, Washington ESD usually gets flooded with applications all at once.

Don't forget you'll need to do job search activities once you're approved. Make sure you understand those requirements so you don't get disqualified later.

Javier Gomez
•What kind of job search activities? I've been looking for work but haven't been tracking it formally.

Zara Malik
•You need to keep a log of your job search efforts and be able to provide details if asked. Check the Washington ESD website for the specific requirements.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember checking my account multiple times a day when I was waiting for approval. Try to be patient - the system works, it just takes time.

•I've definitely been checking too often! It's hard not to when you're worried about money.

If you need help getting through to someone at Washington ESD, I had success with a service called Claimyr after weeks of failed attempts on my own. It's at claimyr.com and they have a demo video that shows how it works. Much better than trying to call yourself.

Just hang in there. The approval will come through. In the meantime, keep filing your weekly claims and keep looking for work. The system is slow but it works.

•Yeah, the waiting is brutal but most people do get approved eventually if they qualify.

One thing I learned is that if your claim goes into adjudication, that can add several more weeks to the process. Hopefully yours stays out of that situation.
0 coins
Javier Gomez
•What causes a claim to go into adjudication?
0 coins
Yuki Yamamoto
•Usually when there's a question about why you left your job or if there's conflicting information somewhere in your application.
0 coins
Emma Wilson
•Since you were laid off due to budget cuts, adjudication is unlikely unless there's some other issue.

I'm in week 4 of waiting and getting really stressed. Bills are piling up and I can't get anyone on the phone to tell me what's happening with my claim.

•That's really rough. Have you tried the Claimyr service that others mentioned? Might be worth it at this point to get some answers.

The good news is that once you're approved, the payments usually come pretty quickly. Direct deposit typically shows up within a few days of approval.
0 coins
Javier Gomez
•That's reassuring. I set up direct deposit when I applied so hopefully that will speed things up.
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•Yeah, direct deposit is definitely the way to go. Much faster than waiting for a check in the mail.

My advice is to stay on top of your weekly claims and keep documenting your job search activities. That way when you do get approved, everything will be ready to go.

•Good advice. I'll start keeping better records of my job search efforts starting today.

One last tip - if you do need to call Washington ESD and can't get through the regular way, that Claimyr service really does work. Worth checking out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ to see if it's right for your situation.
