How long does it take for unemployment to kick in after filing with Washington ESD?

Just filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD yesterday after getting laid off from my warehouse job. I'm really stressed about bills and rent coming up. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for unemployment benefits to actually start coming in? I heard you have to wait a week but I'm not sure if that's true anymore. Also do I need to start doing weekly claims right away or wait until they approve my initial claim? Any help would be appreciated, I've never done this before.

There's a one-week waiting period for new claims, so you won't get paid for your first week even if approved. After that, if everything goes smoothly, you should see your first payment about 2-3 weeks after filing. You need to file weekly claims starting the week after you submit your initial application, even if your claim is still pending.

Thanks! So I should start filing weekly claims this Sunday even though I just filed yesterday?

Exactly. Don't skip any weeks or you could lose benefits for those weeks.

mine took forever because they had to verify my employment history... like 6 weeks total before i saw any money. if they need to do adjudication it can take even longer

Oh no, what triggers adjudication? I'm worried mine might get delayed too.

Adjudication happens when there are questions about your separation from work, conflicting information, or if your employer contests your claim. It's basically when they need to investigate before approving benefits.

I was stuck trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks when my claim got delayed. The phone lines are absolutely brutal - I'd call hundreds of times and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

How much does something like that cost though? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

It's worth it when you consider how much time you'd waste calling on your own. Plus you're not paying anything until you actually get through to someone.

I might need to look into that if my claim gets complicated. Thanks for sharing!

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE! They make you jump through hoops for money that's supposedly yours. I waited 8 WEEKS for my first payment because some computer glitch flagged my claim. Meanwhile bills are piling up and they act like it's no big deal.

I feel you on this. The stress of waiting for benefits while bills are due is unreal.

While the system definitely has issues, most straightforward claims do get processed within 2-3 weeks. The horror stories tend to be the exception rather than the rule.

To give you a realistic timeline: Week 1 is your waiting period (no payment). If your claim is approved without issues, you should receive your first payment for week 2 around the end of week 3 or beginning of week 4. Washington ESD processes payments Tuesday nights, so most people see deposits on Wednesday or Thursday. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every Sunday by midnight.

This is really helpful, thank you. So I should expect my first actual payment in about 3-4 weeks if everything goes smoothly?

That's correct. Keep filing your weekly claims on time and check your account regularly for any issues that might need attention.

just went through this myself last month. took exactly 3 weeks and 2 days from filing to getting my first deposit. no issues with my claim though

That's reassuring to hear! Hopefully mine goes as smoothly as yours did.

Make sure you set up direct deposit if you haven't already. The debit card option can have delays and fees. Also keep track of all your job search activities from day one - Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

Good point about the job search requirements. Do they check that right away or only if there's an audit?

0 coins

They can audit at any time, but they definitely check if you get selected for the Work Search Review. Better to keep good records from the start.

You'll also need to register with WorkSourceWA within a few weeks of filing your claim. Don't forget that step.

depends on if your employer fights it or not. my old boss contested my claim and it took 2 months to sort out. had to do a phone hearing and everything

Yikes, I hope my employer doesn't contest it. I was laid off due to lack of work so it should be straightforward.

Layoffs due to lack of work are usually the most straightforward cases. Employers typically don't contest those since there's no misconduct involved.

Check your account online every day! Sometimes they need additional info and you might not get notified right away. I almost missed a deadline because I wasn't checking regularly enough.

Will do, thanks for the tip. Better to check too often than miss something important.

Another thing about getting through to Washington ESD - if you do run into issues and need to talk to someone, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it beat spending entire days redialing their number. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to get answers.

I looked into that after you mentioned it earlier. Seems legit and the reviews are pretty good. Might be worth it if I get stuck.

wish i had known about that when i was dealing with my adjudication mess. would have saved me weeks of stress

The key is staying on top of everything. File your weekly claims on time, respond to any requests for information immediately, and keep detailed records. Most delays happen because people miss deadlines or don't provide complete information.

Good advice. I'm going to set up reminders on my phone for everything so I don't forget any deadlines.

lol good luck getting through if you need help. i called like 500 times last month trying to fix an issue with my claim. the system is overwhelmed

This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist. The phone system is just not built for the volume they get.

Just be patient and persistent. I know it's stressful when you need the money, but most claims do get processed eventually. The waiting is the hardest part.

Thanks for the encouragement. It's definitely nerve-wracking but hopefully it works out soon.

One more tip - if you get any correspondence from Washington ESD, respond within 10 days. They're pretty strict about deadlines and missing one can cause major delays or even denial of benefits.

Noted! I'll make sure to check my mail and online account daily.

The whole process is designed to discourage people from claiming benefits they're entitled to. Stay strong and don't give up even if it gets frustrating.

0 coins

It definitely feels that way sometimes, but hang in there. You paid into the system so you deserve the benefits.

Hope everything works out for you! Most people get through the process fine, it's just the ones with problems that you hear about more often.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice. I feel much more prepared now for what to expect.

Update us on how it goes! Always good to hear success stories to give others hope.

Will do! I'll post an update once I receive my first payment.
