How long does it take to get unemployment benefits after filing with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job last Friday and need to know how long it typically takes to start receiving unemployment payments from Washington ESD. I filed my initial claim online Monday morning but haven't heard anything back yet. My rent is due in two weeks and I'm starting to panic. Does anyone know the typical timeline from filing to actually getting paid? Also do I need to do anything else besides filing weekly claims?

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your claim. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week even if you haven't been approved yet - you can backdate but it's easier to stay current.

•Thanks! I wasn't sure if I should file weekly claims before being approved. I'll make sure to do that this week.

•yes definitely keep filing weekly or you'll lose those weeks of benefits

The standard processing time is 21 days from when you file your initial claim, assuming Washington ESD doesn't need additional information. If your claim goes into adjudication (which happens if there are questions about your separation from work), it can take 4-6 weeks or longer.

•What would cause it to go into adjudication? I was laid off due to lack of work, nothing complicated.

•Layoffs due to lack of work are usually straightforward. Adjudication typically happens when there's a quit, termination for cause, or conflicting information between you and your employer.

•Mine went into adjudication even though I was laid off and it took 5 weeks. Sometimes Washington ESD just needs to verify things with your employer.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for three weeks about my claim status and can't get through. The phone system is completely overwhelmed. If you need to talk to someone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a Washington ESD agent within an hour. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They basically keep calling until they get through and then patch you in. Saved me hours of redial frustration.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment.

my claim took exactly 3 weeks but that was back in march. might be faster now since they're not as busy as they were during covid

•That's encouraging! Hopefully mine processes quickly since it's a straightforward layoff.

•Mine took 4 weeks in August so I don't think it's gotten much faster unfortunately

Don't forget you also need to register for work search requirements through WorkSource WA. You have to do 3 job search activities per week once your benefits start. Set that up now so you're ready.

Clay blendedgen
•Oh I didn't know about that requirement. Do I register at worksourcewa.com?

Kai Santiago
•Yes, that's the site. You'll need to create a profile and start logging your job search activities. Keep detailed records of everything you do.

•The job search requirement doesn't kick in immediately though - you have a brief grace period when you first start collecting.

I'm in the same boat - filed 10 days ago and still nothing. This is so stressful when bills are piling up. How are we supposed to survive while waiting weeks for approval?

•Check if you qualify for emergency assistance programs while you wait. Some food banks and utility companies have programs for people waiting on unemployment.

•also make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your account so there's no delay when payment does come

The waiting period is brutal. Washington ESD really needs to speed up their processing. Other states manage to approve claims much faster than 3+ weeks.

Carmella Popescu
•Part of the delay is intentional - it's called a 'waiting week' and gives employers time to respond to claims. But yes, the overall processing could be more efficient.

Ana Rusula
•I understand the waiting week concept but there's no excuse for 4-6 week adjudication delays when people need money for basic necessities.

Just want to add that even after your claim is approved, there can be delays in payment processing. My first payment took an extra 3 days beyond what they said.

•Ugh, more delays. This whole system seems designed to make it as hard as possible to get help.

•Once you're in the system regular payments are usually pretty reliable. It's just that initial approval process that's slow.

Make sure you save all your documentation - pay stubs from your last job, your layoff notice, etc. Washington ESD might ask for verification documents during processing.

•Good point. I have my final pay stub and the layoff notice email. Should I upload those somewhere or wait until they ask?

Fidel Carson
•Wait until they ask. They'll send you a message through your online account if they need anything specific.

I used Claimyr too when my claim got stuck in adjudication hell. Totally worth it to actually talk to a human being who could explain what was happening with my case.

•Did they help resolve your adjudication issue or just explain what was going on?

•The agent was able to see that they were waiting for something from my employer and expedited the process. Got approved within a week after that call.

just checking - did you make sure to answer all the eligibility questions correctly when you filed? Any mistakes there can delay processing

•I think I answered everything correctly but now I'm second-guessing myself. Can I go back and check my answers somewhere?

•You can log into your eServices account and review your claim details. If you made an error, you should contact Washington ESD to correct it rather than letting it cause problems later.

The 2-3 week timeline is accurate for most people. I know the wait is nerve-wracking but try to be patient. Washington ESD is processing thousands of claims.

•easy to say be patient when it's not your rent that's due lol

•I get it, I've been there. Just trying to provide realistic expectations so people don't panic if it takes the full 3 weeks.

One thing that helped me was setting up text alerts in my eServices account so I'd know immediately if there were any updates to my claim status.
0 coins
Clay blendedgen
•That's a great idea! I'll set that up right now. Thanks for the tip.

•Yes the text alerts are super helpful. Otherwise you're constantly logging in to check for updates.

If you do end up needing to call Washington ESD about your claim, try calling right when they open at 8am or during lunch break around 12:30. Those seem to be the best times to get through.

Ana Rusula
•I've tried calling at 8am sharp multiple times and still can't get through. The volume is just insane.

Lim Wong
•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Even the 'best' times to call weren't working for me.

Also remember that your weekly benefit amount will be based on your earnings from your highest-earning quarter in your base period. Make sure Washington ESD has accurate wage information from all your employers.

Clay blendedgen
•How do I check if they have the right wage information? I only worked for one company but want to make sure it's all there.
0 coins
Axel Bourke
•You can see your wage information in the monetary determination section of your eServices account once it's processed.

Hang in there! I know the waiting is stressful but most people do get approved if they were legitimately laid off. The system is slow but it does work eventually.

Quick tip - make sure you file your weekly claims by midnight on Saturday each week. If you miss the deadline you might have issues with that week's payment.
0 coins
Clay blendedgen
•Good to know! I'll set a reminder on my phone to file every week.
0 coins
Ayla Kumar
•Actually you can file weekly claims from Sunday through Saturday, not just on Saturday. But definitely don't let it roll over to the next week.

I think the timeline varies a lot depending on what Washington ESD office processes your claim. Some seem faster than others but you don't really have control over that.
0 coins
Carmella Popescu
•Claims are processed centrally now, not by individual offices. The variation is more about claim complexity than location.

•Ah, good to know. I was going off outdated information then.

Just wanted to update - my claim was approved exactly 19 days after I filed! Payment showed up in my account 2 days later. So there's hope for everyone still waiting.

•That's great news! Gives me hope that mine will be processed soon too.

•Congrats! How much was your weekly benefit amount if you don't mind sharing?

•It was about 60% of what I was making weekly at my job, which is what I expected based on the calculator on Washington ESD's website.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD by phone, I also had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Worth trying if you really need to speak with an agent about your claim.

•Okay, multiple people have mentioned this now so it must actually work. I might give it a try.

•Yeah I'm convinced at this point. If my claim doesn't process in the next week I'll probably try it too.
