How quickly can you get unemployment benefits approved in Washington state?
I just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and need to file for unemployment ASAP. I've never done this before and I'm really stressed about how long it takes to actually get benefits. Does anyone know how quickly Washington ESD processes new claims? I heard it can take forever but I'm hoping that's not true. I have rent due in two weeks and really need to know what to expect timeline-wise.

Sorry to hear about the layoff. In my experience, if you have a straightforward claim with no issues, Washington ESD usually processes it within 2-3 weeks. You'll need to file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov and then file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. The first payment usually comes about 3-4 weeks after you file if everything goes smoothly.

•Thanks, that's actually better than I expected. Do I need to wait for anything before I can file my first weekly claim?

•No, you can file your first weekly claim the week after you file your initial application. Just make sure you're looking for work and documenting it because they require 3 job search activities per week.

It really depends on your situation. Mine took 6 weeks because they had to verify my employment history and I worked for a small company that was slow getting back to Washington ESD. If you worked for a bigger employer that reports regularly, it should be faster.

•I worked for Amazon, so hopefully they're good about reporting to Washington ESD quickly.

•Amazon definitely reports regularly to Washington ESD so that shouldn't cause delays. You should be fine as long as you weren't fired for misconduct or anything like that.

Just a heads up - even if your claim gets approved quickly, there's usually a one week waiting period before you get your first payment. So plan for that when you're budgeting. Also make sure to file your weekly claims every Sunday, don't miss any weeks or it can mess up your whole claim.

•Wait, so even if I file this week I won't get paid for the first week?

•Right, there's a one-week waiting period that you don't get paid for. It's just how the system works in Washington state.

I was struggling to get through to Washington ESD to check on my claim status last month and found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be helpful if you run into issues and need to talk to someone at Washington ESD directly.

•Thanks for the tip! How much does something like that cost?

•I don't remember the exact price but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of getting hung up on after waiting for hours. Way less stressful.

•Never heard of that but honestly anything is better than trying to call Washington ESD the regular way. Those phone lines are impossible.

MAKE sure you have all your employment info ready when you file - like your employer's address, your start and end dates, and your gross wages. If you're missing info it can delay everything while they try to verify it.

•Good point, I should gather all that stuff before I start the application. Do I need my W-2 from last year too?

•Not necessarily for the initial filing but it's good to have handy just in case. They mainly need your recent employment history.

The thing that slowed mine down was adjudication. If there's ANY question about why you left your job, it can go into adjudication which adds weeks to the process. Since you were laid off and didn't quit or get fired, you should avoid that issue.

•What exactly is adjudication? I keep seeing that word but don't really understand it.

•Adjudication is when Washington ESD has to investigate something about your claim - like if they're not sure why you left your job or if you're eligible. It can take 4-6 weeks sometimes.

•Yikes, glad I was laid off and not fired then. Sounds like that would complicate things.

One more thing - start your job search activities right away even before your claim is approved. You'll need to report 3 job search activities every week and it's easier if you're already doing them. WorkSourceWA has good resources for job searching too.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?

Reginald Blackwell
•Applying for jobs, going to job fairs, networking events, updating your resume, taking skills classes - lots of things count. Just keep track of everything you do.

honestly the whole system is a mess and takes way longer than it should. I filed in November and didn't get my first payment until January because of some stupid paperwork issue. Hope you have better luck than I did.

•That's exactly what I was worried about. What kind of paperwork issue?

•They couldn't verify my employment at my previous job and it took forever to get it sorted out. Just make sure all your info is accurate when you file.

File online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible. The sooner you file, the sooner the clock starts ticking. And don't procrastinate on your weekly claims - file them every single week even if your initial claim isn't approved yet.

•Can I file the initial claim right now or do I need to wait until a certain day?

Sunny Wang
•You can file anytime, but your benefit year will start the week you file so don't delay if you need the money.

Just went through this whole process myself. Filed on a Tuesday, got approved the following Friday, first payment came about 10 days after that. Not too bad overall if you don't have any complications.

•That gives me hope! Did you have to do anything special to get it processed that quickly?

Lydia Santiago
•Nope, just made sure all my information was correct and complete when I filed. I think that's the key to avoiding delays.

Keep in mind that even after you're approved and start getting benefits, you still need to file those weekly claims every week and keep looking for work. It's not just a one-time thing - you have ongoing requirements to keep the benefits coming.

•How long can you stay on unemployment? Is there a limit?

Everett Tutum
•In Washington state it's usually 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits, but that can vary depending on economic conditions and your work history.

If you do run into problems or need to check on your claim status, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much time and frustration trying to get through to Washington ESD.

•How does that even work? Do they just call for you or something?
0 coins
Hugh Intensity
•Yeah basically they handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when they get through to a real person. Way better than sitting on hold for hours yourself.

The key is being patient but persistent. If something seems wrong with your claim or it's taking too long, don't just sit there waiting - try to contact Washington ESD or get help somehow. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, you know?

•Good advice. I'll definitely follow up if things seem to be taking too long.

•Yeah don't be like me and just assume everything is fine when it's taking forever. Get proactive about checking on it.

One last tip - set up direct deposit when you file your claim. It's faster than waiting for a debit card to be mailed to you. You can add your bank account info right in the application.

•Perfect, I'll make sure to do that. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info, I feel way less stressed about this now.

•Good luck with everything! You should be fine as long as you stay on top of the weekly filing requirements.
