How soon does unemployment kick in after filing with Washington ESD?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD on Monday after getting laid off from my warehouse job. I'm really stressed about how long it takes for benefits to actually start. My last paycheck was two weeks ago and I'm already behind on rent. Does anyone know how soon unemployment actually kicks in once you file? I heard it can take weeks but I'm hoping that's not true.

Generally takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file your initial claim. You have to wait for them to process everything and determine your eligibility. Then you'll get your first payment after filing your first weekly claim.

•2-3 weeks?? I can't wait that long for money. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

•Not really, it's just how the system works. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time though or you'll delay things even more.

Actually it depends on if your claim goes into adjudication or not. Mine was approved in about 10 days but my friend's took over a month because they had to verify his separation reason.

•How do I know if mine will go to adjudication? I was laid off due to budget cuts, nothing complicated.

•Layoffs are usually pretty straightforward. You should be okay unless there's some issue with your work history or something.

Here's what helped me when I was waiting forever for Washington ESD to process my claim - I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to a real person at ESD. They have this demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me from sitting on hold for hours just to check my claim status.

•Wait, there's a service that can actually get you through to ESD? I've been trying to call for days with no luck.

•Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Way better than trying to call yourself and getting hung up on.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment.

•It's worth it if you need to actually talk to someone urgently. Much cheaper than missing rent payments while waiting weeks to get through.

The whole system is ridiculous. They expect you to survive on nothing while they take their sweet time processing claims. I waited 5 weeks for my first payment last year.

Ryan Young
•5 weeks?! That's insane. How did you survive that long without income?

•Credit cards and borrowing from family. It was horrible. The system is broken.

Make sure you're doing your weekly claims every single week even if your initial claim isn't approved yet. That's a mistake a lot of people make.

•Oh wait, I have to do something weekly? I thought I just filed once and waited.

•No no, you have to file a weekly claim every week to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work. Check your ESD account online.

•This is crucial - if you miss weekly claims you can lose benefits for those weeks permanently.

took me exactly 17 days from filing to first payment. wasn't too bad compared to some horror stories ive heard

•17 days isn't terrible I guess. Did you have any complications or was it smooth?

Ezra Collins
•pretty smooth, just had to wait for them to verify my employer info

One thing that can speed up the process is making sure all your information is accurate when you file. Double check your Social Security number, employment dates, and employer information. Mistakes can trigger adjudication.

•I think I got everything right but now I'm paranoid. Is there a way to check if I made any errors?

Sophia Clark
•You can log into your ESD account and review your claim information. If there are errors you might be able to correct them before processing.

Just be patient. I know it sucks but the money will come eventually. In the meantime look into food banks and emergency assistance programs.

Ryan Young
•Yeah I might have to do that. This is all so stressful.

•It really is. The whole unemployment system puts people in impossible situations.

Another tip - when you do get approved, your first payment will include back pay for all the weeks you've been filing. So don't panic if it takes a while, you won't lose that money.

Ryan Young
•Oh that's actually really good to know. I was worried I'd lose those weeks.

Katherine Harris
•Nope, as long as you file your weekly claims you'll get paid for all of them once approved.

The waiting is the worst part honestly. Once things get rolling it's pretty straightforward but those first few weeks are brutal.

•Yeah I'm definitely feeling that stress right now. Trying to stay positive.

Seriously though, if you need to check on your claim status or have questions, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier is a game changer. I wasted so much time trying to call ESD directly before I found it.

•I might actually try that. I've been calling for three days straight with no luck getting through.

•Is it safe to use though? I'm always nervous about giving my info to third parties.

•They don't need your personal info, they just help you get connected to ESD. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

I'm in the same boat, filed last week and anxiously waiting. This thread is actually really helpful to know what to expect.

The system is designed to make you give up. They hope you'll find another job before they have to pay you. It's disgusting.

•That's a bit cynical don't you think? They're just processing a lot of claims.

Justin Evans
•Maybe, but when you're facing eviction while they take their time, it sure feels intentional.

To answer your original question more directly - if everything goes smoothly, you're looking at 2-3 weeks from filing to first payment. Could be longer if there are complications. Just keep filing those weekly claims and be patient.

•Thanks, that's the most straightforward answer I've gotten. I guess I just have to wait it out.

•I know it's tough but you'll get through it. The system works, it's just slow.

The timing really depends on your specific situation. I've seen people get approved in a week and others wait two months. Just depends on what flags get raised in their system.

Ryan Young
•Two months would literally kill me financially. I really hope mine doesn't take that long.

•Most people don't wait that long. That was an extreme case with multiple complications.

I remember when I first filed, I was checking my account like 10 times a day waiting for updates. The anxiety is real.
0 coins
Ryan Young
•YES! I'm definitely doing that. It's driving me crazy.

Gavin King
•Try to distract yourself with job searching. At least then you're being productive while you wait.

One more thing - if you were laid off, make sure your employer doesn't contest your claim. That can really slow things down.
0 coins
Ryan Young
•Why would they contest it if they laid me off? That doesn't make sense.
0 coins
Nathan Kim
•Some employers contest every claim to try to keep their unemployment tax rates low. It's rare but it happens.

Hang in there OP. The first few weeks are the hardest but once you get that first payment it's a huge relief. You'll get through this.

Update us when you hear something! Always curious to hear how long people's claims take to process. And seriously, if you need to talk to ESD before then, check out Claimyr. That service saved my sanity.

Ryan Young
•I definitely will update. And yeah, I'm probably going to try that service if I don't hear anything by Friday.

•Good plan. Sometimes just talking to a real person can give you peace of mind about where things stand.
