How long does Washington ESD unemployment take to get approved and start paying?
Just filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD yesterday after getting laid off from my warehouse job. I'm really stressed about how long this is going to take since I have rent due in two weeks. The website says it can take up to 6 weeks but I'm hoping that's just worst case scenario. Has anyone gotten their first payment faster than that? I'm also confused about when I'm supposed to start filing my weekly claims - do I wait until my claim is approved or start right away? Any advice would be really helpful since this is my first time dealing with unemployment.

You should start filing your weekly claims right away, don't wait for approval. The payment timeline really depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. Simple cases where your employer doesn't contest it can be processed within 2-3 weeks. But if there are any issues or questions about your separation, it could take the full 6 weeks or even longer.

•Thanks! I'll start filing weekly claims this Sunday then. My employer did mention they weren't going to contest it so hopefully that helps speed things up.

•Yeah definitely file weekly even if you haven't been approved yet. I made that mistake and it delayed my whole claim by like 3 weeks because I had to go back and file all the missing weeks.

I got my first payment in exactly 3 weeks after filing. The key is making sure you have all your documentation ready and respond to any requests from Washington ESD immediately. They'll email you through your SecureAccess account if they need anything additional.

•What kind of documentation did you need? I just uploaded my separation notice and ID when I filed.

•That should be enough for most cases. Just keep checking your account daily for any correspondence or requests for additional info.

Honestly the whole process is a nightmare. I've been waiting 5 weeks now and my claim is still in adjudication with no explanation. I've tried calling Washington ESD probably 200 times and either get a busy signal or get hung up on after waiting on hold for hours. The system is completely broken.

•Have you tried using that Claimyr service? I saw someone mention it on another thread. Supposedly they can help you get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. Might be worth checking out at claimyr.com if you're that desperate.

•Never heard of it but at this point I'll try anything. The regular phone system is useless.

•I actually used Claimyr last month when my claim got stuck. They have this demo video that shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Basically they call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an agent. Worked for me after trying to call myself for weeks.

The 6 week timeline is actually pretty accurate in my experience. I filed in October and got my first payment in week 5. The waiting period is the worst part - you just have to be patient and keep filing your weekly claims. Make sure you're also doing your job search activities because they'll audit that later.

•How many job search activities do I need to do each week? The website wasn't very clear about that.

•You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log of everything. Use WorkSourceWA to track them - it makes the process much easier.

just got my first payment after 4 weeks so its not too bad if everything goes smooth. biggest mistake people make is not responding fast enough when ESD asks for more info. check your account every single day

•Good to know, I'll definitely stay on top of checking my account. Did you get your payment by direct deposit or the debit card?

Harper Hill
•direct deposit is way faster. the debit card takes forever to arrive in the mail

I'm in the same boat as you - filed 2 weeks ago and still waiting. The anxiety is killing me because I have bills piling up. At least we're not alone in this mess I guess.

•Yeah it's definitely stressful. I'm trying to stay optimistic that it won't take the full 6 weeks but who knows.

•Both of you should look into local food banks and utility assistance programs while you're waiting. Many communities have emergency assistance for people waiting on unemployment benefits.

The whole system is designed to make you give up and not collect benefits. They make it as difficult and time-consuming as possible on purpose. I had to fight for 3 months to get my claim approved and even then they tried to say I was overpaid. It's absolutely ridiculous.

•While the system definitely has problems, most straightforward claims do get processed within the stated timeframes. The issues usually come up when there are complicating factors or disputes with employers.

•Maybe YOUR claim was straightforward but plenty of us get jerked around for no good reason. The system is broken and they know it.

Filed my claim 3 weeks ago and still nothing. Starting to panic about my mortgage payment. Has anyone had success actually getting through to Washington ESD on the phone recently?

•The phone system is basically impossible during normal business hours. I had to use Claimyr to get through - they handle the calling and waiting for you. Got connected to an agent within a few hours instead of days of trying myself.

•I'll definitely look into that, thanks for the tip. At this point I need to talk to someone who can actually tell me what's going on with my claim.

Just wanted to share some hope - I got my first payment exactly 3 weeks after filing. No adjudication issues, just a standard layoff claim. The key is being super responsive to any requests they send you and making sure all your information is accurate from the start.

•That's encouraging! Did you have to do anything special or was it just a matter of waiting?

Natalie Wang
•Nothing special, just filed accurately and kept up with my weekly claims. Oh and I set up direct deposit right away which probably helped speed up the first payment.

Been waiting 7 weeks now and still in adjudication hell. My employer is contesting the claim even though they laid me off due to budget cuts. This whole process is a joke.

•If your employer is contesting, you'll likely need to participate in a fact-finding interview or potentially an appeal hearing. Make sure you have documentation of your layoff and any communications with your employer about the separation.

•Yeah I've been gathering everything I can find. It's just frustrating that they can drag this out for months when I was clearly laid off through no fault of my own.

Mine took 4 weeks exactly. The waiting is brutal but try to stay patient. Make sure you're doing your job search requirements during the waiting period so you don't have issues later.

•How did you keep track of your job search activities? I'm worried about messing that part up.

•I used a simple spreadsheet with dates, company names, positions applied for, and method of contact. WorkSourceWA also has a built-in tracker that works well.

Just got approved after 5 weeks! Hang in there everyone, the money will come eventually. The hardest part is just the waiting and not knowing what's happening with your claim.

Chloe Green
•Congrats! Did they backdate your payments to when you first filed?

Ryan Young
•Yes, I got backpay for all the weeks I was eligible, even the ones during the waiting period. Just make sure you file every single week.

The inconsistency is what drives me crazy. My friend got approved in 2 weeks while I'm still waiting after 6 weeks. There's no rhyme or reason to how they process these claims.

•It really depends on the complexity of your case and the workload at Washington ESD. Simple layoffs with no disputes process much faster than cases that require investigation or have employer contests.

Sophia Clark
•I guess that makes sense, but it would be nice if they could give you some indication of where you stand in the process.

PSA: Don't wait for your claim to be approved to start looking for work. The job search requirements are real and they will audit you. Start keeping records from day one.

Chloe Green
•Good reminder, thanks. I've already started applying to jobs but I need to get better about documenting everything.

Katherine Harris
•Yeah, they can ask for your job search log at any time and if you don't have it properly documented, they can disqualify you for benefits. Better safe than sorry.

Got my benefits after exactly 4 weeks. The direct deposit showed up on a Wednesday morning and I nearly cried with relief. Just keep filing those weekly claims and try to stay positive.

•That's so good to hear! I'm hoping I'll be in the same boat in a couple weeks. The stress is really getting to me.

•I totally understand the stress. It's awful not knowing when the money will come. But most people do get approved eventually if they're eligible.

Still waiting after 8 weeks. At this point I'm considering taking any job just to stop the bleeding financially. The whole system is designed to wear you down.

•Before you give up, try using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD and find out what's actually happening with your claim. Sometimes there's a simple issue that can be resolved quickly once you talk to an agent.

•I've never heard of that service but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Regular calling is completely useless.

For what it's worth, I think the average is probably around 3-4 weeks for most people. The horror stories get more attention but plenty of claims get processed smoothly. Just keep filing weekly and stay responsive to any requests from Washington ESD.

•Thanks for the perspective. I'm trying to stay optimistic but it's hard when you're worried about bills.

•Totally understandable. The financial stress makes everything worse. But you filed correctly and you're staying on top of things, so you should be fine.

Just want to add that if you get denied for any reason, don't panic. You can appeal the decision and many appeals are successful. I got initially denied but won my appeal after providing additional documentation.

•Good to know there's a backup plan if something goes wrong. Hopefully it won't come to that though.

•Yeah, most people don't need to appeal. But it's good to know the option exists if you need it. The appeals process is actually pretty straightforward.
