How long after losing your job can you apply for unemployment in Washington?
I got laid off from my warehouse job yesterday and I'm wondering if there's a waiting period before I can file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. Some coworkers said you have to wait a week, others said you can apply right away. I'm stressed about bills coming due and want to make sure I don't miss any deadlines. Can someone clarify the timing for filing a new claim?

You can file your unemployment claim immediately after losing your job - there's no waiting period to submit your application. The sooner you file, the better because your benefit year starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. Go to esd.wa.gov and start your claim ASAP.

•Thanks! I was worried I'd have to wait. Going to file tonight after I get home.

Just to clarify - while you can file immediately, there IS a one-week waiting period before you receive your first payment. This is called the 'waiting week' and it applies to everyone. You'll still need to file your weekly claim for that first week, but you won't get paid for it.

•So I file right away but don't get paid for the first week? That's confusing but good to know.

Zane Gray
•Exactly - you file weekly claims from week 1, but payment starts week 2. Don't skip filing that first weekly claim though or it messes up your whole claim.

•The waiting week is such a pain when you're already struggling financially. At least Washington eliminated it temporarily during COVID but it's back now.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for three days to ask about my claim status and the phone lines are always busy. Has anyone found a way to actually reach someone? I keep getting hung up on after waiting for hours.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr.com - it's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and connects you when they get through. Saved me so much time and frustration. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Try calling right at 8am when they open, that's when I got through last week

Make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file - Social Security number, employer addresses, dates of employment, reason for separation. The system is pretty picky about getting everything exactly right.

•Good point. I have my last paystub and layoff notice. Is there anything else I should gather?

•Your employer's full legal name and address are important. Sometimes the name on your paystub isn't the exact legal entity name Washington ESD needs.

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing, took me forever to figure out how to file my first claim. why cant they make it simpler

•It's definitely not user-friendly. The key is to go slow and read each page carefully. Don't rush through or you'll make mistakes that delay your claim.

•I agree it's confusing but once you get through it the first time, the weekly claims are much easier

One thing to remember - if you're laid off on a Friday, you can file over the weekend. The system is available 24/7 online. Don't wait until Monday thinking you need business hours.

•That's perfect since I was laid off on a Friday. Filing tonight for sure.

Just want to add - even if you think you might not qualify, it's worth filing anyway. Let Washington ESD make the determination rather than assuming you don't qualify. I thought I wouldn't qualify because of my part-time status but I did.

•Good advice. I worked full-time for 18 months so I should be fine, but better safe than sorry.

•Same here - I was worried about qualifying but turned out I had enough work history. The worst they can do is say no.

For anyone having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I mentioned Claimyr earlier but wanted to add that it really helped me when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Instead of calling hundreds of times myself, they handled it and got me connected to someone who could actually help.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth checking out their site for current info. For me, the time saved was worth it since I was spending entire days trying to call.

Another tip - when you file, make sure to sign up for direct deposit right away. Paper checks take forever and can get lost in the mail. Direct deposit is much faster and more reliable.

•Will do. I have my banking info ready to go.

I filed the day after I got laid off and still had to wait 3 weeks for my first payment because of some verification issue. Don't expect money immediately even if you do everything right.

Aileen Rodriguez
•Ugh, that's frustrating. What kind of verification issue?

Romeo Barrett
•They needed to verify my employment dates with my former employer. Took forever because HR was slow to respond to Washington ESD.

•That's common unfortunately. The adjudication process can add weeks to your claim even when there's no real issue.

Do you have to file on specific days of the week? I'm confused about the timing for weekly claims.

Zane Gray
•You can file your weekly claim any day of the week, but most people file on Sundays since that's when the new week starts. You have to file every week to keep getting benefits.

Issac Nightingale
•Thanks, that makes sense. So it's not like you have to file on a specific day assigned to you?

Zane Gray
•Nope, not in Washington. Some states do that but here you can file whenever during the week.

Make sure your reason for separation is accurate when you file. If you put 'quit' when you were actually laid off, it could delay or deny your claim. Be precise about what happened.

•I was definitely laid off due to budget cuts, so that should be straightforward.

Update: I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to Washington ESD today! The agent was able to explain why my claim was pending and what I needed to do. Way better than spending all day redialing.

•That's awesome! I might have to try that too. How long did it take them to get you connected?

•They called me back within a few hours once they got through. Much better than the 6+ hours I was spending on hold.

don't forget you'll need to do the job search requirements too once you start getting benefits. keep track of your job applications

Aileen Rodriguez
•How many job applications do I need to do per week?
0 coins
Alejandro Castro
•In Washington, you need to complete 3 job search activities per week. This can include applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records in your WorkSourceWA account.

I wish I had known about filing immediately when I got laid off last year. I waited two weeks thinking I needed time to 'process' what happened and ended up losing those benefit weeks. Don't make my mistake!

•That's exactly what I was worried about. Filing tonight for sure.

Also remember that even though you can file immediately, your employer might contest your claim if they think you quit or were fired for misconduct. Be prepared to provide your side of the story if that happens.

Aileen Rodriguez
•It was a clear layoff with paperwork, so hopefully no issues there.

Butch Sledgehammer
•You should be fine then. Keep that layoff paperwork handy just in case Washington ESD needs it.

The Washington ESD customer service situation is so bad right now. I've been trying to reach them for a month about an overpayment notice and can't get through. The Claimyr thing mentioned here might be my only option at this point.

Leslie Parker
•Overpayment issues definitely need to be handled quickly. You don't want to ignore those notices.

•I'm not ignoring it, I just can't reach anyone to discuss it! It's incredibly frustrating.

OP, make sure you understand that your benefit amount is based on your earnings in your 'base period' which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. If you haven't worked much recently, you might not qualify or might get a low benefit amount.
0 coins
Aileen Rodriguez
•I've been working full-time for the past 18 months making decent money, so I think I should be okay.
0 coins
Sergio Neal
•You should be fine then. The system will calculate your benefit amount automatically when you file.

Last thing - don't be surprised if your claim goes into 'adjudication' status. It seems like half of all claims get flagged for additional review these days, even when there's no real issue. Just be patient and provide any documents they request quickly.

Aileen Rodriguez
•How long does adjudication usually take?
0 coins
Alejandro Castro
•It varies widely - anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the issue and Washington ESD's workload. The key is to respond to any requests for information immediately.

•And if you get stuck in adjudication limbo, that's when services like Claimyr can really help you get through to someone who can move your claim along.
