How long before you can file unemployment with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and I'm wondering how soon I can file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time or can I apply right away? I've never filed for UI before and I'm stressed about covering rent next month. Also heard something about a waiting week - does that mean I have to wait a week before I can even apply?

You can file your initial claim immediately after losing your job - no waiting period to submit the application itself. Washington ESD recommends filing within the first week after you become unemployed. The 'waiting week' is different - that's about when you'll receive your first payment, not when you can apply.

•Thanks! So I can go ahead and file today then? Do I need any specific documents or can I just use my last paystub?

•Yes file today! You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months. Last paystub helps but they can verify wages through their system.

Filed mine three days after getting fired and had zero issues. The Washington ESD website walks you through everything step by step. Just make sure you have all your employer information ready - names, addresses, dates of employment, etc.

•Good to know! How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

•Mine was pretty straightforward, took about 2 weeks to get approved and start receiving payments. Some people take longer if there are complications.

Definitely file ASAP. I waited almost two weeks thinking I needed to job search first and that was a mistake - you can't backdate your claim start date. Washington ESD processes claims based on when you file, not when you lost your job.

•Wait really? I thought you could backdate unemployment claims?

•Nope, Washington ESD is pretty strict about this. Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file your initial claim. That's why they tell you to file immediately.

•Glad I asked then! Filing mine this afternoon for sure.

Just a heads up - even though you can file right away, actually getting through to Washington ESD by phone if you need help can be brutal. I spent hours trying to call them when I had questions about my claim. Ended up finding this service called Claimyr that basically calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person. Check out claimyr.com if you run into phone issues.

•Thanks for the tip! Hopefully I won't need to call but good to know there's a backup option.

•Never heard of that service before. How does it work exactly?

•They have this demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Basically they handle all the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get a human on the line.

The sooner the better honestly. I made the mistake of waiting almost a month because I thought I'd find another job quickly. Big regret because you lose all those weeks of potential benefits.

•Oof that sucks. Yeah I'm not taking any chances - filing today.

•Same thing happened to my brother. Lost like 6 weeks of payments because he waited.

One more thing - make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still being processed. A lot of first-time filers miss this step and then have gaps in their payments.

•When do I start filing weekly claims? Right after I submit my initial application?

•The system will tell you when your first weekly claim is due, usually it's the Sunday after you file your initial claim. Just log in to your account and check.

Washington ESD system is actually pretty user friendly compared to other states. The whole process took me maybe 30 minutes to complete the initial application.

•That's reassuring! I was expecting it to be super complicated.

•It's mostly just basic info - previous jobs, why you left, contact details. Nothing too crazy.

Make sure you answer all the questions accurately about why you left your job. If you put down the wrong reason it can delay your claim processing.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing. That should be straightforward right?

•Yeah that's a clear case. Just select 'laid off' or 'lack of work' when they ask about separation reason.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource too if you haven't already. It's part of the job search requirements.

•Is that separate from the unemployment application or part of the same process?

•It's separate but they'll tell you about it during the application process. You have to register within a certain timeframe after filing.

Pro tip: take screenshots of everything when you file. If there are any issues later, having proof of what you submitted can save you headaches.

•Good thinking. I'll screenshot the confirmation page and anything else important.

The waiting week thing confused me too when I first filed. You still have to file your weekly claim for that first week, you just don't get paid for it. It's like a one-week penalty basically.

•So I file the weekly claim but don't get money for the first week? That seems weird.

•Yeah it's annoying but that's how Washington ESD does it. Every claimant has to serve one waiting week.

Just double check that your employer actually reported your wages correctly. Sometimes there are discrepancies that can slow down approval.

•How would I know if there's a discrepancy? Would it show up in my application?

•Washington ESD will show you the wages they have on file for you during the application. Compare it to your records and if something looks off, note it.

I had to call Washington ESD during my claim process and it was a nightmare trying to get through. Seriously consider that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier if you need to reach them. Saved me so much frustration.

•Seems like a lot of people have trouble getting through to them by phone. I'll keep that service in mind just in case.

Make sure you have a good email address on file. Washington ESD sends important notifications by email and if you miss them it can affect your benefits.

•Good point. I'll use my main email address, not my work one since I just lost my job.

The key is just getting that initial claim filed. Everything else can be sorted out later if needed. Don't overthink it - the system will guide you through the process.

Good luck! The hardest part is just getting started. Once you have your claim number and account set up, everything else is pretty routine.
