How long after leaving a job can you apply for unemployment in Washington?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job yesterday and I'm wondering if I need to wait a certain amount of time before I can file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. My supervisor said something about waiting periods but I wasn't really paying attention because I was so shocked. Can I apply right away or do I need to wait? I really need to get this process started because I have rent due next week and I'm already stressed about money.

You can apply for unemployment benefits immediately after losing your job in Washington. There's no waiting period to file your initial claim with Washington ESD. The sooner you apply, the better because your benefits are dated from when you file, not when you lost your job.

•That's a relief! I was worried I'd have to wait weeks before I could even start the process.

•Just make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file online. You'll need dates, wages, and your employer's info.

File as soon as possible but understand there IS a one-week waiting period before you can receive your first payment. This means your first payable week will be your second week of unemployment. You still need to file weekly claims for that first week though.

•So I file right away but don't get paid for the first week? That's confusing but at least I can start the process.

Carmen Flores
•Exactly. Think of it as a one-week deductible. You file weekly claims starting with your first week but payment begins with week two.

I made the mistake of waiting two weeks after I got fired thinking I needed to 'cool off' or something. Lost two weeks of potential benefits because of it. File immediately!

•Ugh that sucks! Yeah I'm definitely filing today then.

•Wait you can backdate claims though right? I thought Washington ESD could go back a few weeks?

•You can request backdating but it's not guaranteed and requires good cause. Better to file immediately.

The Washington ESD website says you should file your claim during your first week of total or partial unemployment. Don't wait! I spent 3 hours on hold trying to get through to ask this same question when I could have just filed online.

•3 hours on hold?! That's insane. I definitely don't want to deal with calling them if I don't have to.

•If you do need to call Washington ESD, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through. They basically call for you and connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of waiting on hold. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and the site is claimyr.com

•Good to know it's not too complicated. I was worried it would take forever.

Make sure you understand the difference between when you can FILE and when you can get PAID. You can file immediately but there's still that waiting week before payments start.

•This is so confusing. Why have a waiting week at all? Seems like they're just making it harder for people who need help.

•It's just how the system works. Most states have waiting periods. At least Washington's is only one week.

I was in the same situation last month. Got laid off on a Friday and filed my claim that same weekend. The key thing is to file during your first week of unemployment, not after it. Your benefit year starts from when you file.

Aisha Rahman
•So if I file today, my benefit year starts today even though I was only laid off yesterday?
0 coins
Amara Nwosu
•Yes exactly. The benefit year is 52 weeks from when you file your initial claim.

DO NOT WAIT!! I cannot stress this enough. Every day you wait is potentially money lost. File your claim immediately and start doing your weekly claims right away.

•Got it, filing today for sure. Thanks for the emphasis!

•This is good advice. I see too many people who think they need to job search for a few weeks first or something.

The Washington ESD online system is available 24/7 so you can file whenever. Don't feel like you have to wait for business hours or anything.

•Perfect, I can do it tonight after I get my paperwork together.

Just remember you'll need to be actively looking for work starting immediately. Washington has job search requirements you have to meet each week.

•How many job applications do I need to submit per week?

Dylan Cooper
•You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week. Applications, interviews, networking events all count.

•And keep detailed records! Washington ESD can audit your job search activities at any time.

I had issues with my claim getting stuck in adjudication because I waited too long to file. When I finally needed to talk to someone about it, regular calling was impossible. Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked - got connected to an agent in like 15 minutes instead of waiting hours.

•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

•It's when they need to review your claim for eligibility issues. Usually happens if there are questions about why you left your job or earnings discrepancies.

the system is so broken, they make you wait a week for money but expect you to file immediately. makes no sense

•I mean at least there's unemployment benefits at all. Some countries don't have anything.

•fair point but still frustrating when you need money right away

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov - it's way faster than trying to call. Have your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and bank info ready if you want direct deposit.

•Thanks for the specific website! I'll bookmark that.

One thing nobody mentioned - if you were laid off, make sure your employer correctly reports it as a layoff and not a quit or termination for cause. That can affect your eligibility.

•How do I check what they reported? Should I be worried about this?

•Washington ESD will contact your employer to verify the reason for separation. If there's a dispute, your claim might go into adjudication.
0 coins
Carmen Flores
•This is why having documentation is important. Keep any layoff notices or emails about the separation.

I've been through this process twice now. File immediately, keep detailed records of everything, and don't panic if your claim takes a few days to process. The system works but it's not instant.

•How long did it take for your benefits to start coming in?

Zainab Ahmed
•About 2-3 weeks total. One week waiting period plus processing time for the initial claim.

Pro tip: set up your online account and file electronically. Paper applications take forever to process and you can't track the status as easily.

•Definitely doing it online. Sounds like that's the way to go.

Make sure you understand that filing for unemployment isn't admitting defeat or anything. You paid into this system through your taxes - it's there for exactly this situation.

•Thanks, I needed to hear that. I was feeling pretty down about the whole thing.

If you run into any issues with your claim or need to speak with Washington ESD, definitely check out Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it really does work. They handle the calling and waiting so you don't have to sit on hold for hours.

•Is that service free or do they charge for it?

•There is a fee but honestly it was worth it to avoid the frustration of trying to get through on my own.
