How long do I have to wait to file Washington ESD unemployment after job loss?
I just got laid off yesterday from my warehouse job and I'm trying to figure out when I can actually file for unemployment benefits. Some people are telling me I need to wait a week, others say I can file right away. I'm really confused about the timing and don't want to mess this up. Does anyone know how long you have to wait to file with Washington ESD? I need to get this process started ASAP because I've got rent due in two weeks.

You can file your initial claim immediately - there's no waiting period to FILE the claim itself. The waiting week happens after you file, not before. Go to esd.wa.gov and start your application today. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim gets processed.

•Thanks! So I don't have to wait at all to submit the application? That's a relief.

•Exactly, file ASAP. I made the mistake of waiting thinking I had to and it just delayed everything unnecessarily.

There's a one-week waiting period for benefits, but that starts AFTER you file your claim. You should file your initial application as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. The waiting week is unpaid, but you still need to file your weekly claim during that week to establish your claim.

•Wait, so we have to file weekly claims even during the waiting week when we don't get paid? That seems weird.

•Yes, you must file your weekly claims every week including the waiting week. If you don't, it can cause delays or issues with your claim.

•Got it, so file the initial claim now, then do weekly claims starting with the waiting week. Thanks for clarifying!

I had a similar situation last month and couldn't get through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions. Super frustrating when you're stressed about money. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual ESD agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful.

•Never heard of that before. Did it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they just help you get through the phone system faster. I was able to talk to an ESD rep within like 30 minutes instead of calling for days.

File immediately but make sure you have all your employment info ready - SSN, employer info for the last 18 months, dates of employment, reason for separation. The system will ask for all this stuff and if you don't have it ready you might time out.

•Good point about timing out! I'll gather everything first before starting the application.

•yeah that happened to me twice before i figured out to have everything written down first

The Washington ESD website says you can file your claim on the same day you become unemployed or the day after. There's no benefit to waiting - your benefit year starts when you file, not when you lost your job.

•This is important info - so if I wait a week to file, I basically lose a week of potential benefits?
0 coins
Sofia Rodriguez
•Exactly. Your benefit year is 52 weeks from when you file, so waiting just shortens the time you have available benefits.

I'm confused about something - do you file the initial claim AND the first weekly claim on the same day, or are those separate things?

Jamal Edwards
•They're separate. First you file your initial application to establish your claim. Then you wait for them to process it and send you info about filing weekly claims.

•Ok that makes sense. So initial claim first, then wait for instructions about weekly filing. Thanks!

File today if possible. Fridays and Mondays are usually the worst days to try to access the website because everyone's trying to file their weekly claims. Might have better luck on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

•Good tip about avoiding busy days. I'll try to file this afternoon then.

•Early morning or late evening also tend to be less busy times if you can manage it.

Been through this process three times unfortunately lol. You can file immediately but just know that your first payment won't come for about 3-4 weeks minimum due to processing time plus the waiting week. Plan accordingly if you're tight on money.

•3-4 weeks?? That's longer than I expected. Good thing I have some savings to bridge the gap.

•Sometimes it's even longer if they need to verify your employment or if there are any issues with your claim. The system is pretty slow.

•Yeah exactly. And if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, add another few weeks to that timeline.

Make sure you're actually eligible before filing. You need to have worked a certain amount in your base period and meet other requirements. The Washington ESD website has an eligibility checker tool that can help.

•I worked full time for the past two years so I should be good, but I'll check that tool just to be sure.

Pro tip: when you do file, keep copies of everything and write down your confirmation numbers. The system can be glitchy and you might need those numbers later if something goes wrong.

•This is solid advice. I learned this the hard way when my initial claim seemed to disappear from the system.

•Will do! I'll screenshot everything and keep notes. Thanks for the heads up.

If you run into problems with the online system or need to talk to someone, don't waste days trying to call the regular number. I used Claimyr to get through and it was so much faster than sitting on hold forever. Worth checking out if you get stuck.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's pretty reasonable considering how much time and stress it saves. Way cheaper than missing out on benefits because you can't get help when you need it.

DON'T WAIT! File as soon as you can. I waited a few days thinking I needed to 'cool off' or something and it was just wasted time. The Washington ESD system doesn't care about your feelings, it cares about dates and deadlines.

•Lol the ESD system definitely doesn't care about feelings. It's all about following their rules exactly.

Also remember that if you do any work at all (even like a one-day gig) you need to report it on your weekly claims. Some people think you can't work at all while collecting unemployment but that's not true - you just have to report it.

QuantumLeap
•Yeah and if you don't report work and they find out later, you'll have to pay back the overpayment plus penalties. Not worth the risk.

ThunderBolt7
•Good to know. I might pick up some odd jobs while I'm looking for full-time work so I'll make sure to report everything.

The whole process is pretty straightforward once you get started. Just don't overthink it - file the initial claim, do your weekly claims, and look for work. Keep records of everything and you'll be fine.

One more thing - make sure you register with WorkSource WA for the job search requirement. You'll need to do that anyway and it's better to get it done early rather than scrambling later.

•Is that a separate website or part of the ESD system?

•It's a separate website but they're connected. You'll get instructions about it after you file your initial claim.

I had to use Claimyr twice during my unemployment because I kept running into issues that needed clarification from an actual person. Their system really works - saved me probably 20+ hours of calling and getting nowhere. Definitely recommend it if you hit any snags.

•20+ hours saved sounds worth it. The phone system is such a nightmare to navigate.

•Exactly. Time is money when you're unemployed, and getting stuck in phone hell just adds to the stress.
