How long do you have to be unemployed to get unemployment benefits in Washington?
I just got laid off from my job yesterday and I'm trying to figure out the timing for filing for unemployment benefits. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before I can apply? I've heard different things from people - some say you have to wait a week, others say you can file right away. I'm really confused about the whole process and don't want to mess anything up. Can someone explain how this works with Washington ESD?

You can file your initial claim right away - there's no waiting period to apply. The sooner you file, the better because your claim starts from the week you file, not when you became unemployed. There IS a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits, but that's different from when you can file.

•Oh okay, that makes sense. So I should file today then? I was worried I was jumping the gun.

•Yes, definitely file today. The waiting week will be automatically applied to your first week of unemployment, but you need to get the claim started ASAP.

Just to clarify what the previous poster said - you have to serve one waiting week before you get paid, but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week. It's confusing but you basically file for every week you're unemployed starting with your first week, you just don't get paid for the first one.

•Wait, so I file for the week I don't get paid for? That seems backwards.

•I know it's weird, but yes. You file for every week to maintain your claim, even the waiting week. Think of it as proving you're still unemployed and looking for work.

One thing to watch out for - if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to file or have questions about your claim, there's a service called Claimyr that can help you actually reach an agent. I used it last month when I couldn't get through after trying for days. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I'm always nervous about third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's real. They don't ask for your personal info or anything, they just help you get through the phone queue. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

File immediately but also know that Washington ESD is super backed up right now. My claim took 3 weeks to get approved and I had to call multiple times. The system is just overwhelmed.

•3 weeks?! That's terrifying. I need to pay rent in two weeks.

•Not everyone takes that long. Mine was approved in 5 days. It depends on whether your claim needs adjudication or not.

Miguel Ortiz
•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

Zainab Khalil
Adjudication just means they need to review something about your claim - like if you were fired vs laid off, or if there are questions about your work history. It's not necessarily bad, but it does add processing time.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that's straightforward.

•That should be fine. Make sure you have your separation paperwork ready when you file.

also make sure you understand the job search requirements right away. you have to be actively looking for work and log your job search activities. i think its 3 job contacts per week but double check that

Miguel Ortiz
•Good point. Where do I log those job search activities?
0 coins
Zainab Khalil
•You can log them on the Washington ESD website when you file your weekly claims. Keep track of where you applied, when, and what type of contact it was.

I'm so frustrated with this whole system. I filed 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. No one answers the phone at Washington ESD and their online chat is useless. How are people supposed to survive while waiting for bureaucrats to process paperwork?

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When you're stuck like this, sometimes you need help getting through to an actual person who can check your claim status.

•I might have to try that. I've called 50+ times and either get busy signals or get hung up on after waiting an hour.

For what it's worth, I filed on a Tuesday and got my first payment (minus the waiting week) the following Tuesday. The key is filing correctly the first time and having all your employment info ready.

•What employment info do I need exactly?

Keisha Robinson
•Your employer's name and address, your dates of employment, your reason for separation, and your wage info. If you have a separation notice from your employer, that helps too.

One more thing - don't wait to file just because you're not sure about something. You can always provide additional information later, but you can't backdate your claim if you wait too long to file.

•That's good to know. I was worried about making mistakes on the application.

•Just do your best with the info you have. If Washington ESD needs clarification on anything, they'll contact you.

Quick question - do part-time workers qualify for unemployment? I was only working 25 hours a week before I got laid off.
0 coins
Zainab Khalil
•Yes, part-time workers can qualify. It depends on your total wages during your base period. You might get a smaller weekly benefit amount, but you can still qualify.

Word of warning - make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week. I missed one week because I was out of town and it messed up my whole claim. Had to call and straighten it out.

Miguel Ortiz
•What happens if you miss a week? Do you lose benefits permanently?
0 coins
GalaxyGazer
•No, you don't lose them permanently, but you have to contact Washington ESD to reopen your claim. It's just a hassle you don't want to deal with.

I used Claimyr last week when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Finally got through to someone who could explain what was happening. Turns out they just needed additional documentation from my employer. Would have saved me weeks of stress if I'd known about it sooner.

Miguel Ortiz
•How much does something like that cost?

Oliver Wagner
•It's not expensive considering how much time and frustration it saves. Plus the peace of mind knowing someone can actually help you navigate the system.

The waiting week thing is so stupid. Like we're not already stressed enough about losing our jobs, now we have to wait an extra week for benefits. Makes no sense.

•I think it's supposed to discourage people from filing frivolous claims, but yeah, it's frustrating when you really need the money.

•Right? Like anyone files for unemployment benefits for fun.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource Washington too. It's part of the job search requirements.

Miguel Ortiz
•Is that something I do right away or can I wait?
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•You should do it as soon as possible. Some people have had issues with their claims because they didn't register in time.

I'm going through this right now too. Filed last Monday and got my determination letter yesterday. Approved for $412 per week. Not great but better than nothing.

Miguel Ortiz
•That's reassuring that it can move quickly. Hopefully mine goes smoothly too.

•Yeah just make sure all your info is accurate when you file. Any discrepancies can slow things down.

The website can be glitchy sometimes. If you get error messages, try a different browser or clear your cache. I had to use Edge instead of Chrome to get my application to go through.

•Good tip, thanks. I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues.

Has anyone had success with the live chat feature on the Washington ESD website? I tried it yesterday but got disconnected after waiting 45 minutes.
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•The live chat is pretty unreliable. That's another reason why services like Claimyr are helpful - they can actually get you through to a real person on the phone.
0 coins
Isabella Santos
•Yeah, I'm starting to think the phone might be the only way to get real help.

Just want to echo what others have said - file immediately. I waited 3 days because I thought I needed to get paperwork from my employer first, and I wish I had just filed right away. You can always add documents later.
