When can you claim unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I just got laid off from my job yesterday and I'm wondering when I can actually start claiming unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before filing? I've heard different things from coworkers - some say you can file immediately, others say you have to wait a week. Also, when do the benefits actually start paying out? I'm trying to figure out my budget for the next few months and need to know what to expect.

You can file your initial claim with Washington ESD right away - don't wait! There's a one-week waiting period before benefits start, but you want to get your claim in the system as soon as possible. The sooner you file, the sooner that waiting week starts counting.

•Thanks! So I should file today then? Do I need any specific documents before I start?

•Yes, file today. You'll need your Social Security number, employer information from the last 18 months, and bank info if you want direct deposit. The Washington ESD website walks you through everything.

Just to clarify what the previous poster said - there's a waiting week where you won't get paid, but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week. It's confusing but important for keeping your claim active.

•Wait, so I file weekly claims even during the waiting week when I won't get paid?

Maggie Martinez
•Exactly. You have to file every week to maintain your claim, even the unpaid waiting week. Miss a week and you could have issues later.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I filed last year. The phone lines are always busy and their online chat barely works. If you run into issues reaching them, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that one of those services that charges you? I'm already broke from losing my job.

•They do charge but it was worth it for me when I couldn't get through on my own. Much cheaper than missing out on benefits because I couldn't reach an agent.

The key thing is understanding when your benefit year starts. It's not when you file - it's the Sunday of the week you first became unemployed. So if you got laid off on Wednesday, your benefit year started the previous Sunday.

•I got laid off on Thursday, so my benefit year started this past Sunday? That's helpful to know for timing.

•Correct. And remember, you can only collect benefits for weeks you're actually unemployed and available for work.

Don't forget you have to be able and available for suitable work to qualify. Washington ESD will eventually require job search activities too, though I think they give you a few weeks before that kicks in.

•How many job searches per week do I need to do?

Lia Quinn
•I believe it's 3 job search activities per week, but check the current requirements on the Washington ESD website since they change sometimes.

ugh the whole system is so confusing. I filed 2 weeks ago and still haven't gotten my first payment. My claim shows approved but the money just isn't there yet.

•Did you set up direct deposit? Paper checks take longer. Also make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week.

•yeah i have direct deposit set up. been filing weekly claims too. maybe i should call them but the wait times are insane

For anyone struggling with long wait times calling Washington ESD, I recently discovered Claimyr after spending hours on hold. It's a service that helps you get through to an actual agent. Worth checking out if you're having issues - saved me so much time and frustration.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you?

•They handle the calling and waiting, then connect you when an agent is available. Much better than sitting on hold for hours yourself.

Just want to add that you should file even if you're not sure you qualify. Let Washington ESD make the determination rather than assuming you don't qualify. I almost didn't file because I thought I wouldn't qualify, but it turned out I did.

•Good point. I was worried about my reason for separation but I guess they'll figure that out.

•Exactly. As long as you were laid off and it wasn't for misconduct, you should be fine. They'll verify everything during the claim process.

The waiting week is such BS. Like we're not already stressed enough about money when we lose our jobs. Other states don't make you wait a week.

•I hear you, but at least Washington has decent benefit amounts compared to some states. Could be worse.

•true i guess. just wish the whole process was smoother

Make sure you understand the difference between when you CAN claim and when benefits actually start. You can file immediately, but benefits don't start until after the waiting week AND your claim is processed and approved.

•So there could be additional delays beyond the waiting week if my claim takes time to process?

Justin Trejo
•Yes, if they need to verify information with your employer or if there are any issues with your claim, it could take longer.

I'm in a similar situation and was told by a friend that you have to wait until you've been unemployed for a full week before you can file. Is that not right?
0 coins
Zane Gray
•That's not correct. You can file your initial claim right away. The waiting week happens automatically - you don't need to wait to file.

•Thanks for clarifying! I was about to wait another few days before filing.

Remember that if you do any work during the week, even small amounts, you need to report it on your weekly claim. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits accordingly but you might still get partial payments.

•What if I do some freelance work while collecting? Do I need to report that too?
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
•Yes, all work and earnings must be reported, including freelance, gig work, everything. Be honest about it - they can find out anyway.

One thing that caught me off guard was having to register with WorkSource. Make sure you do that early in the process or it can delay your benefits.

Aileen Rodriguez
•Is WorkSource registration required right away or can I do it later?

Sara Unger
•I think you have a little time but don't wait too long. It's better to get it done early so it doesn't become an issue later.

The whole online system can be glitchy too. Sometimes I couldn't file my weekly claim because the website was down. If that happens, keep trying or call them to file by phone.

•Yeah I've had issues with the website too. Usually works better early in the morning.

•Good tip about timing. I noticed it's slower on Sundays when everyone's trying to file their weekly claims.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, there's a service called Claimyr that I used when my claim got stuck in adjudication. They got me connected to an agent who could actually help resolve the issue. Check out claimyr.com if you need to reach someone at Washington ESD.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully my claim goes smoothly.

•Hope so too! But it's good to know there are options if you need help getting through to them.

Bottom line - file as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. The process takes time and you don't want to delay it any further by waiting to start.

•Good luck! The process can be frustrating but it's worth it to get the benefits you're entitled to.
