How long do you have to be out of work to get unemployment benefits in Washington?
I just got laid off from my job yesterday and wondering about the timing for filing unemployment. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before I can apply for Washington ESD benefits? I've heard different things from coworkers - some say you have to be unemployed for a week first, others say you can file right away. I don't want to mess up my claim by filing too early or too late. Also worried about the waiting period and when I'd actually start getting payments. Can someone explain how this works?

You can file your unemployment claim right away - don't wait! Washington ESD recommends filing your claim the first week you're unemployed or have reduced hours. There's a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits, but that starts counting from when you file, not from when you became unemployed.

•Thanks! So I should file this week even though I just lost my job yesterday?

•Yes, file as soon as possible. The sooner you file, the sooner that waiting week starts counting.

definitely file right away like the other person said. I made the mistake of waiting two weeks thinking I needed to be unemployed longer and it just delayed everything

•Good to know, I was thinking about waiting too. Glad I asked here first.

The key thing to understand is the difference between when you can FILE and when you can RECEIVE benefits. You can file immediately after becoming unemployed, but there's a mandatory one-week waiting period before payments start. This waiting week serves both your claim and helps manage the system workload.

•So even if I file today, I won't get paid for the first week I'm unemployed?

Oliver Alexander
•Correct - the first week you're eligible is unpaid. It's like a deductible. After that, if you're approved, you'll get weekly payments.

•This is confusing - why make people wait a week when they just lost their jobs and need money right away?

I struggled with getting through to Washington ESD when I first filed. The phone lines are always busy and the website can be glitchy. If yoU need to talk to someone about your specific situation, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual ESD agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

•It's worth checking out their site for pricing. For me it was worth it to actually talk to a human instead of being on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

wait I thought you had to be unemployed for 30 days before you could file? that's what my brother told me

Morgan Washington
•No, that's not correct. You can file right away. Maybe your brother was thinking of something else?

•oh man I've been unemployed for 3 weeks already and didn't file yet! am I screwed?

Oliver Alexander
•You're not screwed but you should file immediately. You can only get benefits for weeks after you file your claim, so you've potentially lost 3 weeks of benefits.

The system is set up so backwards. You lose your job and need money immediately but they make you wait a week for no good reason. It's just bureaucratic nonsense.

•I feel you on that. The whole system feels designed to make it harder on people who are already struggling.

•The waiting week has been around forever. I think it's supposed to encourage people to find work quickly?

Important detail - make sure you meet the work history requirements too. You need to have worked in Washington state during your base period and earned a minimum amount. Just being unemployed isn't enough.

•How do I know if I meet the work history requirements? I've been at my job for 2 years.

Lydia Bailey
•If you've been working steadily for 2 years you should be fine. Washington ESD will calculate this automatically when you file your claim.

Also remember you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits, even during that first waiting week. Don't skip filing just because you won't get paid that week.

•Good point! I forgot to file my weekly claim one week and it delayed my whole payment schedule.

•When do the weekly claims need to be filed? Is there a deadline each week?

Mateo Warren
•You file for the previous week. So this week you'd file for last week. There's usually a cutoff on Saturday night I think.

The job search requirements kick in right away too. You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a log. Don't forget about that part or you could get disqualified.

•Wait, you have to start looking for jobs immediately? Even during the waiting week?

Alice Coleman
•Yes, the job search requirement starts right when you file. You're required to be actively seeking work to receive benefits.

I used Claimyr when my claim got stuck in adjudication and couldn't get through on the phone. Definitely recommend it if you run into issues. The website is claimyr.com and they helped me understand what was happening with my claim.

File online at esd.wa.gov - it's usually faster than calling. Just make sure you have all your employment information ready including dates and wages.

•What specific information do I need to have ready when I file?

•Your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, reason for unemployment, and your bank info if you want direct deposit.

The waiting period thing is stupid but at least once it's over you get paid pretty regularly. My payments come every Tuesday like clockwork.

•Same here. After the initial waiting period and approval, the payments have been consistent.

One more thing - if you quit your job instead of being laid off, you might not be eligible right away. There are different rules for voluntary vs involuntary unemployment.

Layla Sanders
•I was laid off, not quit. Should be fine then right?

Arjun Patel
•Yeah, layoffs typically qualify you for benefits as long as you meet the other requirements.

The whole process stressed me out so much when I first did it. But honestly once you file and get approved it's pretty straightforward. Just file weekly and keep looking for work.

•The anxiety of not knowing if you'll be approved is the worst part.

Jade Lopez
•Exactly! But most people who were laid off through no fault of their own get approved.

If anyone's having trouble reaching ESD by phone, I also had success with Claimyr. Worth checking out if you need to speak with someone urgently about your claim status.

•I keep seeing people mention this service. Is it legit?

•Yeah it's legitimate. They basically help you get through the phone queue to talk to an actual ESD representative.

Bottom line - file immediately, don't wait. The longer you wait the more potential benefits you lose. And make sure to file those weekly claims religiously.

Also keep in mind that even if you find part-time work while receiving benefits, you might still be eligible for partial unemployment benefits. Don't automatically stop filing if you get some work.

•This is good to know. I didn't realize you could work part-time and still get some benefits.

Tami Morgan
•Yeah, they reduce your benefit amount based on what you earn, but you don't necessarily lose everything.

The key is just getting started with the process. Don't overthink it - file your claim, file weekly, look for work, and be patient with the system.

•Appreciate all the help everyone. This forum has been way more helpful than the ESD website FAQ!

Just want to echo what everyone else is saying - definitely file right away! I made the same mistake as some others here and waited thinking I needed to be unemployed longer. Cost me about 10 days of potential benefits because I didn't understand the system. The waiting week is mandatory regardless of when you file, so there's literally no benefit to delaying your application. Washington ESD's online system at esd.wa.gov is pretty user-friendly once you get started. Make sure you have your last employer's information handy and your social security number. Good luck with your claim!
