How long after your fired can you apply for unemployment - Washington ESD timing
Got laid off from my warehouse job last Tuesday and I'm wondering about the timing for filing. How long after your fired can you apply for unemployment with Washington ESD? I heard there's some kind of waiting period but I'm not sure if that means I should wait to apply or if I can apply right away. My last day was the 14th and I got my final paycheck yesterday. Should I file now or wait? I really need the benefits to start ASAP because rent is due next week.

You should apply as soon as possible after being laid off. There's no waiting period to FILE your claim with Washington ESD - you can do it the day after your last day of work. The waiting period happens AFTER you file, not before. Go to esd.wa.gov and get your application in today.

•Thanks! I'll file today then. Do I need any specific documents when I apply?

•You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and details about your separation. Have your employer's name and address ready too.

Apply immediately! I made the mistake of waiting 2 weeks thinking I needed to wait and it just delayed everything. Washington ESD processes claims based on when you file, not when you lost your job.

•Oh no, so waiting actually hurts you? I'm definitely filing today then.

•Yeah the sooner the better. Your benefit year starts when you file, not when you were terminated.

Just a heads up - even though you can apply right away, there IS a one-week waiting period before you get paid. So your first payable week will be your second week of unemployment. But definitely file ASAP.

•So I won't get paid for the first week even if I qualify? That's rough but good to know.

•Exactly. The first week is unpaid but you still need to file your weekly claim for it. It's just how the system works in Washington.

I've been struggling to get through to Washington ESD on the phone for weeks about my claim issues. If you run into problems after filing, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Is that legit? I've never heard of a service like that before.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than sitting on hold for 3 hours just to get disconnected.

•I used Claimyr too when I had adjudication issues. Definitely worth it if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

File your claim online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible. You can apply for unemployment benefits starting the day after your last day of work. Don't wait - delays in filing can affect your benefit start date. Make sure you have accurate employment information for the past 18 months ready.

•Perfect, I'm logging in now to file. Thanks for the clear info!

•Also remember you'll need to do weekly claims every week even during the waiting week.

Don't overthink it - just file! The application process is pretty straightforward online. You'll create your SecureAccess Washington account if you don't have one, then complete the unemployment application. Takes about 30 minutes.

•Good to know it's not too complicated. I was worried it would take forever.

•Nah the application itself is easy. It's getting through to them on the phone if you have problems that's the real challenge lol

I waited 3 days after getting fired and regretted it. Even those few days can matter for your benefit year dates. Apply today if you can.

•Everyone's saying the same thing - apply immediately. I'm convinced!

Quick question - were you fired for cause or laid off? If you were actually terminated for misconduct that could affect your eligibility. But if it was a layoff or reduction in force you should be fine to apply right away.

Eloise Kendrick
•It was a layoff, not fired for cause. They eliminated my position due to budget cuts.

Carmella Fromis
•Perfect then you should have no issues. Layoffs due to lack of work are qualifying separations for unemployment.

•Yeah layoffs are straightforward. Firing for misconduct is where it gets complicated with Washington ESD.

The waiting period confused me too when I first applied. You CAN apply immediately after job loss, but there's a one-week waiting period before benefits start. Two different things entirely.

Eloise Kendrick
•That makes sense now. Apply right away but don't expect payment for the first week.

Theodore Nelson
•Exactly! And make sure you file your weekly claims starting with that first unpaid week or you could mess up your whole claim.

Pro tip: have your bank account info ready when you apply so you can set up direct deposit right away. Paper checks take forever to arrive from Washington ESD.

•Good call, I'll grab my bank routing number before I start the application.

Just to be crystal clear - you can apply for unemployment the day AFTER your last day of work. Not the same day, but the day after. Don't wait longer than that though.

•Got it, so since my last day was Tuesday, I can file starting Wednesday. Thanks for clarifying!

•Yeah Washington ESD is pretty specific about that timing. Day after last day of work.

If you run into any issues with your claim after filing, don't hesitate to call Washington ESD. Yes the hold times are brutal but sometimes you need to talk to someone. I heard about this Claimyr service that helps you get through faster - might be worth looking into if you get stuck.

•Someone else mentioned Claimyr too. I'll keep that in mind if I need help.

•Yeah it's become pretty popular. The phone system at Washington ESD is just overwhelmed most of the time.

unemployment system is so confusing with all these different waiting periods and deadlines. wish they made it clearer on the website

•The Washington ESD website has gotten better over the years but still not great for first-time users.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too before you start collecting. Washington ESD requires you to make 3 job contacts per week and keep a log. Don't want you to get surprised by that later.
0 coins
Eloise Kendrick
•Oh I didn't know about the job search requirement. Is that 3 applications per week?
0 coins
Diego Fisher
•It's 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking, interviews, etc. You have to log them in the WorkSourceWA system.

Henrietta Beasley
•Yeah the job search stuff is super important. They can audit your logs and disqualify you if you're not compliant.

Bottom line: file today, start your weekly claims this Sunday for the week you were laid off, and don't expect payment until your second week of benefits. Pretty simple once you understand the process.

•Perfect summary. I feel much more confident about filing now. Thanks everyone!

One more thing - make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your claim is still pending. Missing weekly claims can cause delays or even disqualify you from those weeks.

Eloise Kendrick
•When do the weekly claims open? Is it the same time every week?

Emma Johnson
•Weekly claims open Sunday morning and you have until Saturday night to file. Most people file Sunday morning to get it out of the way.

Applied for mine 4 days after getting laid off last month and wished I'd done it sooner. Every day you wait is basically a day lost in the system. File ASAP!

Remember that Washington ESD processes claims based on when you file, not when you lost your job. So if you were laid off Tuesday but don't file until the following Tuesday, you've essentially lost a week of potential benefits.

If you need help navigating the Washington ESD system or getting through to someone, I had good luck with Claimyr when I was dealing with an adjudication issue. Really helped cut through the phone maze.
