How long after losing job can you file for unemployment in Washington - timing questions
I got laid off from my warehouse job last Tuesday and I'm wondering how soon I should file for Washington ESD unemployment benefits. My supervisor said I could file right away but my coworker told me I have to wait a week? I'm getting conflicting information and really need to know the correct timing. Also worried about missing some kind of deadline. Can someone clarify the rules about when you're allowed to file after losing your job?

You can file your initial claim immediately after losing your job - there's no waiting period to submit your application to Washington ESD. The sooner you file, the better because your benefit year starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. Don't wait!

•Thanks! So I could have filed last Tuesday right after I got laid off? I wish I had known that.

•Yeah you definitely should file ASAP. Every day you wait is potentially money lost.

Your coworker is confusing the filing timeline with the waiting week. Washington ESD eliminated the waiting week in 2020, so you can file immediately and start receiving benefits right away if approved. The key is to file your initial claim as soon as possible after job loss.

•Oh that makes sense! So there used to be a waiting week but not anymore?

CosmicCadet
•Exactly. The waiting week was eliminated during COVID and hasn't come back. File your claim today if you can.

I had the same confusion when I got let go in March. Tried calling Washington ESD for days but could never get through. Finally used Claimyr.com to get connected to an actual agent who confirmed I should have filed immediately. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works - basically calls for you until they reach someone.

•That sounds helpful, how much does something like that cost?

•I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of being on hold forever. Saved me days of frustration.

•Never heard of that service but honestly anything that gets you through to Washington ESD sounds good to me

file asap, like tomorrow morning if you can. i waited 3 days after getting fired and kicked myself for it

Zoe Christodoulou
•Why did you kick yourself? Did those 3 days matter?

Giovanni Gallo
•well not really but i was just anxious about money and every day felt like forever

The Washington ESD system is so broken that it doesn't matter when you file because they'll probably lose your application anyway. I filed immediately and my claim got stuck in adjudication for 2 months. MONTHS! Meanwhile bills are piling up and they act like it's no big deal.

•Adjudication delays are frustrating but that doesn't mean people shouldn't file right away. The sooner you file, the sooner the process starts.

•Process? What process? It's just a black hole where claims go to die while they collect interest on our money.

•I get the frustration but filing immediately is still the right advice. You can't get benefits if you don't file at all.

There's actually no legal deadline for filing unemployment in Washington, but practically speaking you want to file within the first few days. Your benefit year is 52 weeks from when you file your initial claim, so delaying just shortens your potential benefit period.

Zoe Christodoulou
•Wait so if I file today my benefit year ends 52 weeks from today, not from when I lost my job?
0 coins
Mei Chen
•Correct. The benefit year clock starts ticking from your file date, which is why filing quickly is important.

Same thing happened to me, got laid off and everyone had different advice about timing. I ended up filing 5 days later and everything worked out fine, but wish I'd done it sooner just for peace of mind.

•Did Washington ESD ask why you waited 5 days or was it not an issue?
0 coins
Amara Adeyemi
•No they didn't ask anything about the delay. Think they're just happy when people actually file correctly lol

Also make sure you have all your employment information ready when you file - SSN, dates of employment, reason for separation, employer contact info. Washington ESD will verify everything with your employer so accuracy is crucial.

•Good point. I have my last paystub, is that enough or do I need more documentation?
0 coins
Dylan Wright
•Your paystub helps but they mainly need the employer information to contact them directly. Just be accurate with dates and wages.

One thing people don't realize is that even if you file immediately, you still need to complete your weekly claim certifications to actually receive payments. Filing the initial claim just establishes your eligibility - the weekly claims are what trigger payments.

Zoe Christodoulou
•Oh so filing is just the first step? I thought once approved the payments would start automatically.

Jamal Thompson
•Nope, you have to file weekly claims every week to certify you're still unemployed and meet the job search requirements.

•This is another thing Claimyr helped me understand when I finally got through to an agent. The whole weekly claims process was confusing.

To directly answer your question: there's no minimum waiting period to file for Washington ESD unemployment after job loss. You can and should file immediately. The old one-week waiting period was eliminated in 2020 and hasn't returned. Don't let anyone tell you to wait.

•Perfect, this is exactly what I needed to know. Filing my claim tonight. Thank you!

•good choice. better to have it in the system asap

I remember when my dad got laid off in the 90s he had to wait a week before filing. Times have changed but a lot of older workers still think that rule exists. Definitely file right away now.

Zoe Christodoulou
•That explains why my coworker was confused - he's been working for 30+ years and probably remembered the old rules.

NebulaKnight
•Exactly. The system has changed a lot over the years, especially during COVID.

Also worth noting that even if your employer contests your claim, filing immediately is still the right move. The adjudication process can take weeks, so getting it started ASAP is crucial.

•My layoff was pretty straightforward - company downsizing, not my fault. Should I still expect any issues?
0 coins
Mei Chen
•Probably not if it was a clear layoff due to downsizing. Those are usually approved without problems.

Should file" immediately - yeah right. I filed immediately and 8 weeks later'I m still waiting for my first payment. The system is completely broken and timing'doesn t matter when they'can t process claims properlyanyway.

Jamal Thompson
•8 weeks is definitely too long. Have you tried contacting them about the delay?

Fatima Al-Mazrouei
•Tried calling hundreds of times. Phone system just hangs up on you after an hour on hold.

Sofia Ramirez
•That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist - to get around the phone system issues. Sometimes you need help just to reach an actual person.

Bottom line: file today if you haven't already. Don't overthink the timing - sooner is always better than later with Washington ESD claims.

•Yep, that's the plan. Logging into the website right now to get started.

•Good luck! The application itself is pretty straightforward once you get started.

Remember that your first weekly claim will be for the week you file, so if you file on Wednesday you can only claim Wednesday through Sunday of that week. Another reason to file early in the week if possible.

Zoe Christodoulou
•Good tip! I lost my job on Tuesday so filing today (Thursday) means I can claim Thursday-Sunday this week?
0 coins
Dylan Wright
•That's right. Weekly claims are always Sunday through Saturday, so you'd claim Thu-Sat for your first partial week.

For anyone still struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone, I really recommend checking out Claimyr. After wasting days trying to call, they got me connected in under an hour. Made the whole process so much less stressful.

•Is that service legit? Seems too good to be true with how hard it is to reach Washington ESD normally.

•Totally legit. They basically just keep calling for you with their system until someone picks up. Saved me so much frustration.

Final answer for OP: File your Washington ESD unemployment claim immediately after job loss. There is no waiting period and delaying only hurts you. The benefit year starts when you file, not when you lost your job, so time is literally money in this case.

•Thank you everyone! Filed my claim successfully and feeling much better about the whole situation now.

One last thing - make sure you file your weekly claims consistently even if your initial claim is still being processed. Missing weekly claim deadlines can cause payment delays even after approval.

Zoe Christodoulou
•Good to know. So I should keep filing weekly claims even if I haven't heard back about my initial application yet?
0 coins
Mei Chen
•Exactly. Keep filing weekly claims as long as you're unemployed and eligible. Don't let processing delays interrupt your weekly filing schedule.
