Do you get unemployment weekly from Washington ESD - confused about payment schedule
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and I'm confused about when I actually get paid. Do you get unemployment weekly or is it bi-weekly? I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday but I don't see any payment yet. My account shows the claim was processed but no money has hit my bank account. Is this normal? How long does it usually take after filing your weekly claim to actually receive the payment?

Yes, unemployment payments from Washington ESD are weekly, but there's usually a delay. You file your weekly claim each week, but the actual payment typically comes 1-2 business days after you file. So if you filed Sunday, you should see the deposit by Tuesday or Wednesday.

•Ok that makes sense. I was worried something was wrong since I didn't see it right away.

•yeah its always a few days delay, dont worry

Washington ESD processes weekly claims on a rolling basis. You file every week (usually Sunday through Saturday deadline) and get paid for that week a few days later. The key is filing on time - if you miss a week you have to explain why or you might lose that week's benefits.

•Good to know about the deadline. Is there a specific day I should file or can I do it any day during the week?

•You can file any day of the week for that week, but most people do it Sunday or Monday. Just don't wait until Saturday night - the system sometimes has issues on weekends.

I had the same confusion when I started. Washington ESD does weekly payments but the timing threw me off at first. What helped me was using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually get through to someone at Washington ESD who explained the whole process. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how to reach agents. Much easier than trying to call yourself.

•Thanks for the tip! I was dreading having to call Washington ESD if something went wrong.

•Never heard of that service but calling Washington ESD is definitely a nightmare. Might check it out.

UGH the Washington ESD system is so confusing!! I thought it was bi-weekly like my old job. Why can't they just make it simple? And why does it take so long to get the money? Some of us need that money right away!!

•I get the frustration but weekly is actually better than bi-weekly. You get money more often, just in smaller amounts.

•I guess that makes sense. I'm just stressed about bills and was expecting the money sooner.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any work during the week, you need to report it on your weekly claim. Even if it's just a few hours. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits based on what you earned, but failing to report work can get you in trouble for overpayment.

•What if I do like gig work or freelance stuff? Do I need to report that too?

Statiia Aarssizan
•Yes, all work needs to be reported. Gig work, freelance, cash jobs, everything. They're pretty strict about this.

•This is why I'm scared to do any side work. Seems like more trouble than it's worth.

The payment schedule is: File weekly claim → Washington ESD processes it → Payment issued 1-2 business days later → Money hits your account. If you have direct deposit set up, it's usually faster than waiting for a debit card or check.

•I did set up direct deposit so hopefully that helps with the timing.

•Direct deposit is definitely the way to go. The debit card they give you has fees.

I've been on unemployment for 3 months now and I still get confused sometimes. The weekly thing is consistent but there are weeks where it seems to take longer. Holidays especially mess things up.

Ezra Beard
•Good point about holidays. I didn't think about that affecting the timing.

Statiia Aarssizan
•Yeah, any time there's a federal holiday it can delay processing by a day or two.

The whole system is designed to make you jump through hoops. Weekly claims, job search requirements, waiting periods... it's like they don't want you to get the money you're entitled to.

•I understand the frustration but the weekly system actually helps prevent fraud and ensures people are actively looking for work.

•I guess but it still feels like they're making it harder than it needs to be.

•That's a good routine to get into. I'll try to make it consistent.

If you ever run into issues with your weekly claims or payments, seriously consider using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD. I spent weeks trying to call them myself about a payment issue and got nowhere. Claimyr got me connected in minutes and the agent fixed everything.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time and stress it saves. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting hung up on.

Important reminder: you must file your weekly claim even if you don't think you'll get paid that week (like if you worked too many hours). Skipping weeks can mess up your claim and you might lose benefits permanently.

•So even if I work a full week at a temp job, I should still file?

Statiia Aarssizan
•Yes, absolutely. You'll report the work and probably get $0 for that week, but it keeps your claim active.

My sister went through this last year and she said the key is just being consistent. File every week, same day if possible, and keep track of your job search activities. The payments become pretty predictable once you get used to the schedule.

•Thanks for sharing her experience. It's helpful to hear from someone who went through the whole process.

Question about the job search thing - do I need to apply for jobs every single week? What if there aren't any good matches for my skills that week?

•You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week in Washington. They can be applications, networking, or other approved activities. Keep detailed records.

Hugh Intensity
•Ugh 3 per week? That seems like a lot when there aren't many jobs in my field.

The weekly payment thing is actually better than other states I've heard about. Some places make you wait 2 weeks. At least with Washington ESD you get money flowing pretty quickly once you're approved.

•That's a good perspective. I should be grateful it's weekly rather than complaining about the few days delay.

Pro tip: if your payment is ever delayed or missing, don't wait around wondering. Contact Washington ESD right away. I waited 2 weeks thinking it would fix itself and it just made the problem worse.

•Good advice. How did you end up reaching them? I've heard it's really hard to get through.

•I used Claimyr after trying on my own for days. Wish I had known about that service from the beginning.

One more thing to remember - the amount you get each week depends on your previous earnings. It's not the same for everyone. Some people get the maximum, others get less. But whatever your weekly benefit amount is, that's what you'll get each week (minus any deductions for work).

Ezra Beard
•Mine shows $362 per week on my account. Is that pretty typical?
0 coins
Sunny Wang
•That's a decent amount. The maximum in Washington is around $844 I think, so you're getting a reasonable benefit.

Just wanted to add that the weekly schedule also applies to when you can file. You can't file for next week until the current week is over. The system won't let you.
0 coins
Ezra Beard
•That makes sense. So I can't get ahead of myself and file early.

Reginald Blackwell
bottom line - weekly payments, file every week, money comes in a few days. dont make it more complicated than it is

Glad you got your questions answered! The Washington ESD system can definitely be confusing at first but once you get into the routine it becomes second nature. Just remember to keep good records of everything in case you need to reference it later.
