How does unemployment pay work in Washington ESD - payment schedule and amounts?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD but I'm confused about how the payment system actually works. Do they pay weekly or bi-weekly? Is it direct deposit or do I get a check? And when does the first payment usually come through after you're approved? I've been filing my weekly claims but haven't received anything yet and it's been 2 weeks since my claim was approved. Just want to make sure I understand the process correctly.

Washington ESD pays weekly but you have to file your weekly claim first before they release the payment. Usually takes 1-2 business days after you file your weekly claim for the money to hit your account if you have direct deposit set up.

•Thanks! I do have direct deposit setup. I filed my weekly claim on Sunday so hopefully I'll see something by Wednesday.

•Make sure you're filing by midnight Sunday or you might get delayed. I learned that the hard way.

Been on unemployment for 3 months now. The payment schedule is: file your weekly claim on Sunday, payment processes Monday/Tuesday, money in your account Tuesday/Wednesday. But if there's any issues with your claim it can take longer.

•What kind of issues usually cause delays? My claim status just says 'paid' but no money yet.

•Could be anything - job search verification, wage verification, or sometimes just system glitches. If it says paid though you should see the money soon.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your payment status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. I used it last month when my payments were delayed and got through to someone in about 20 minutes instead of calling for hours.

•How much does that cost? I'm already strapped for cash waiting for my unemployment.

•It's worth checking out their site for the details. For me it was totally worth it to get answers quickly instead of spending days trying to call.

•Interesting, never heard of this before. Might be useful for when I need to update my job search info.

The weekly benefit amount depends on your previous earnings. Washington ESD calculates it based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. Maximum weekly benefit is around $844 right now I think, but most people get less than that.

•Mine shows $362 per week. Does that sound about right for someone who was making $45K annually?

Lucas Schmidt
•Yeah that sounds reasonable. The formula is roughly 60% of your average weekly wage up to the maximum.

Make sure you're doing direct deposit and not waiting for the debit card. The debit card option takes forever and has fees. I switched to direct deposit after the first week.

•How do you switch to direct deposit? Is it in the online portal?

•Yeah, log into your eServices account and look for payment method options. You'll need your bank routing and account numbers.

Just a heads up - they take out taxes if you elect to have them do it. Otherwise you'll owe at tax time. I learned this the hard way last year.

•Good point! I did elect to have taxes taken out. Better to deal with it now than get hit with a big bill later.

•How much do they typically take out for taxes?

•I think it's 10% federal. You can change this in your account settings if you want.

I've been waiting 3 weeks for my first payment and I'm starting to panic. My claim says approved but the payment history is empty. Anyone else experience this?

•Are you filing your weekly claims? Even if your initial claim is approved, you still have to file every week to get paid.

•Yes I've been filing every Sunday! This is so frustrating. I might need to call them.

•This is exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helped me. Getting through to Washington ESD by phone is nearly impossible during normal business hours, but they got me connected to an agent who could see what was holding up my payments.

The timing can vary depending on your bank too. Some banks release the funds immediately when they receive the ACH transfer, others hold it until the next business day.

•I have Chase, do you know if they typically hold it or release it right away?

•Most major banks like Chase release unemployment payments pretty quickly, usually same day or next morning.

Pro tip: if you file your weekly claim really early Sunday morning (like 12:01 AM), sometimes the payment processes faster and you might see money by Tuesday morning.

•I always file mine right when I wake up on Sunday. Never thought about doing it at midnight!

•Yeah I started doing it after I read somewhere that they process claims in the order they're received. Not sure if it's true but seems to work for me.

Don't forget about the job search requirement. You need to be actively looking for work and keeping records. If they audit your claim and you can't prove you're job searching, they can stop your payments.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week? I've been doing about 3-4.

•I think it's 3 job search activities per week minimum. Applications, networking events, interviews all count.

•Make sure you're logging everything in WorkSourceWA too. They can check that system.

Washington ESD payments are considered taxable income so you'll get a 1099-G at the end of the year. Just something to keep in mind for tax planning.

•Good reminder. I'm setting aside about 20% of each payment for taxes just to be safe.

•That's smart. Better to have too much set aside than to owe money you don't have.

If your payment is delayed and you can't get through to Washington ESD on the phone, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent who explained that my payment was held up because of a job search verification issue I didn't even know about.

•How long did it take to get through using Claimyr?

•About 15 minutes total. Way better than the 3 hours I spent trying to call directly the day before.

Keep in mind that holiday weeks can delay payments by a day or two. If Monday is a federal holiday, your payment might not process until Tuesday or Wednesday.

•That's good to know. I was wondering why my payment was late during Thanksgiving week.

•Yeah, any federal holiday affects the processing schedule. Plan accordingly around those weeks.

Make sure your direct deposit info is correct in the system. I had an old account number in there and it took 3 weeks to figure out why my payments were bouncing back.

•How did you find out that was the problem?

•I finally got through to someone at Washington ESD who could see the failed ACH transfers in my account. Had to update my banking info and wait for the next weekly claim cycle.

The whole system is honestly pretty straightforward once you understand it. File weekly claim → wait 1-2 days → money hits your account. The problems usually come from missed weekly claims or verification issues.
