How do I receive my unemployment money from Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD but I'm confused about how I actually get the money. Do they mail a check or is it direct deposit? How long does it take after filing my weekly claim? This is my first time dealing with unemployment and I'm not sure what to expect.

Washington ESD has two main ways to pay benefits - direct deposit or the prepaid debit card. When you set up your claim, you should have chosen one of these options. Direct deposit is faster, usually takes 1-2 business days after your weekly claim is processed.

•I think I chose direct deposit but I'm not 100% sure. How can I check which option I selected?

•Log into your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account and check your payment preferences under your profile settings. You can change it there if needed.

The debit card option is called ReliaCard and it's issued by U.S. Bank. If you didn't set up direct deposit, they'll automatically send you one of these cards. Takes about 7-10 days to arrive by mail.

•Just got my ReliaCard last week and it works fine. You can use it anywhere Visa is accepted or get cash from ATMs.

•be careful with the ATM fees though, some charge like $3 per transaction

Important reminder - you only get paid AFTER you file your weekly claim and it's processed. Filing your claim doesn't guarantee payment if there are any issues with your eligibility that week.

•What kind of issues could stop payment? I thought once you're approved, the money comes automatically.

•Things like not completing your job search requirements, working hours you didn't report, or if Washington ESD needs additional information about your availability to work.

I've been waiting 3 weeks for my first payment and calling Washington ESD is impossible. Their phone lines are always busy and when I do get through, I get disconnected. Anyone else having this problem?

•Same issue here. I've tried calling dozens of times and either get a busy signal or wait on hold for hours just to get hung up on.

•I had the same frustration until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents by phone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•It's real. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time every week. Washington ESD processes payments on specific days and if you miss the deadline, you might have to wait until the next cycle.

•What's the deadline for filing weekly claims? I don't want to mess this up.

•You can file your weekly claim starting Sunday for the previous week, and you have until Saturday to file it. Don't wait until the last minute though.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE is important to understand. Washington ESD typically processes payments on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you file your weekly claim on Sunday, you might see the payment by Wednesday if everything is in order.

•This is helpful! I filed my claim on Monday and was wondering why I hadn't been paid yet.

•Yeah, timing matters. Also remember that holidays can delay processing by a day or two.

One thing that confused me at first - your first payment might be delayed because of the waiting week. Washington state has a one-week waiting period before benefits start.

•Wait, so even if I file right away, I won't get paid for the first week?

Amina Sy
•Correct. The first week you file is your waiting week - you don't get paid for it, but you still need to file the claim to maintain your benefits.

•That's so frustrating when you're already struggling financially. Why do they do this?

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about payment issues, I used Claimyr a few weeks ago and it worked great. They got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of me spending all day trying to call.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth checking their website for current info. For me, it was worth it just to get my payment issue resolved quickly instead of losing days trying to call.

Make sure your address is correct in your Washington ESD account! If they're mailing you a debit card and your address is wrong, you'll be waiting forever.

•Good point. I moved recently and forgot to update my address. Had to wait an extra two weeks for my card.

•You can update your address through SecureAccess Washington pretty easily. Just make sure to do it before they send out any cards or correspondence.

The whole system is confusing when you're new to it. I remember panicking when my first payment didn't show up immediately. Now I know it's just the normal process - file your claim, wait for processing, then get paid a few days later.

•This makes me feel better. I was starting to worry that something was wrong with my claim.

•Yeah, the waiting is the worst part. But once you get into the routine, it's pretty straightforward.

Pro tip: if you choose direct deposit, make sure your bank account info is exactly correct. One wrong digit and your payment gets rejected and you have to wait even longer.

•Happened to me! Had to call Washington ESD to fix it and then wait another week for the payment to go through.

•That's when services like Claimyr really come in handy - getting through to fix those kinds of issues without spending hours on hold.

Just want to add - keep track of all your payments for tax purposes. Washington ESD will send you a 1099-G form at the end of the year, but it's good to have your own records too.

•Ugh, I forgot unemployment is taxable income. Do they take taxes out automatically?

Diego Mendoza
•You can choose to have taxes withheld when you set up your claim, but it's optional. If you don't, you'll owe taxes when you file your return.

Bottom line - be patient with the first payment. It usually takes 2-3 weeks from when you first file to when you see money, especially if you're getting the debit card mailed to you.
