How do you receive unemployment payments from Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after waiting 6 weeks for adjudication. Washington ESD sent me a determination letter but I'm confused about how I actually get the money? Do they mail checks or is it direct deposit? I set up my SecureAccess Washington account but don't see any payment options. Also when do payments usually come through - is it weekly or bi-weekly? This is my first time filing for unemployment so I have no idea what to expect.

Washington ESD gives you a few payment options. Most people get a debit card (KeyBank card) mailed to them automatically. You can also set up direct deposit through your online account if you prefer that. Payments are weekly if you file your weekly claims on time.

•How long does it take for the debit card to arrive? I need to pay rent next week.

•Usually 7-10 business days for the card to arrive. Direct deposit is faster once it's set up but takes a few days to process initially.

ugh the KeyBank card is such a pain, they charge fees for everything. I switched to direct deposit after getting hit with ATM fees constantly

•Really? What kind of fees? I was thinking about sticking with the card.

•ATM fees if you don't use their network, transaction fees for some purchases. Direct deposit is way better.

To set up direct deposit, log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look for 'Payment Method' or 'Direct Deposit' in your profile settings. You'll need your bank account and routing numbers. Just remember you still have to file weekly claims every week to get paid - the payments don't happen automatically.

•Thanks! Do I file weekly claims starting immediately or wait until I get the card?

•Start filing weekly claims right away! You can file them even before your payment method is set up. Don't wait or you'll miss payments.

•This is important - I made the mistake of waiting and lost 2 weeks of benefits because I thought I needed the card first.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to ask about payment setup, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals when I needed to update my payment info.

•Never heard of that, does it actually work? The phone lines are impossible.

•Yeah it worked for me. They basically handle the calling and waiting so you don't have to sit on hold forever.

Just to add - payments usually hit your account/card on Tuesdays or Wednesdays if you file your weekly claim by Sunday night. Sometimes there are delays during holidays.

•Good to know! So if I file this Sunday, I should see payment by Wednesday?

Liam O'Sullivan
•Should be, as long as there are no issues with your claim. First payment sometimes takes a little longer.

Whatever you do, don't lose track of filing your weekly claims. I missed one week and it was a nightmare trying to get it backdated. Washington ESD makes you jump through hoops to fix missed claims.

•How do you backdate missed claims? I think I might have missed one last week.

•You have to call Washington ESD and explain why you missed it. They might make you file additional paperwork. It's not guaranteed they'll approve it.

The whole payment system is confusing at first but once you get into the routine it's pretty straightforward. File weekly claim Sunday, get paid Tuesday/Wednesday, repeat.

•That helps! I was overthinking it. Just need to get the payment method set up and start filing weekly.

make sure you keep all your payment records too, sometimes washington esd screws up and you need proof of what you were paid

•Good point. I screenshot everything just in case.

One more thing - if you choose direct deposit, make sure your bank account info is correct. Wrong account number means your payment goes nowhere and it takes forever to fix.

•How do I double-check the account info after I enter it?

Jamal Edwards
•You should be able to view it in your profile settings. Some people do a small test deposit first to make sure.

I've been on unemployment for 8 months now and still use the KeyBank card. Yeah there are some fees but it's convenient and I don't have to worry about bank account changes affecting my payments.

•That's true, the card is more stable if you move or change banks.

•Exactly. And you can check the balance online or with their app.

Just remember that Washington ESD payments are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld automatically or pay them later, but don't forget about taxes when you're budgeting.

ThunderBolt7
•Oh I didn't think about taxes! How much do they typically withhold?

Fatima Al-Sayed
•I think it's 10% federal if you choose withholding. You can set this up in your account preferences.

To summarize for OP: 1) You'll get a KeyBank debit card automatically in 7-10 days, OR you can set up direct deposit in your SecureAccess WA account 2) Start filing weekly claims immediately - don't wait for the card 3) Payments typically arrive Tues/Wed after filing by Sunday 4) Keep records of everything 5) Consider tax withholding

•Great summary. The key is just staying on top of those weekly claims.

If you run into any issues with payment setup or delays, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Getting through to Washington ESD customer service is brutal without help.

•I'll keep that in mind if I have problems. Hopefully the direct deposit setup goes smoothly.

Pro tip: set up text or email alerts for your weekly claim filing. Washington ESD sends reminders but it's easy to forget and miss the deadline.

ThunderBolt7
•Where do I set up those alerts?

Sofia Rodriguez
•In your SecureAccess account under notification preferences. You can choose email, text, or both.

been getting unemployment for 3 months now, payments are pretty reliable once you get the system down. just dont expect customer service to be helpful if something goes wrong lol

•So true, their customer service is terrible. That's why services like Claimyr exist - people are desperate to actually talk to someone.

One last thing - if you move during your unemployment period, make sure to update your address immediately. Payment delays happen when addresses don't match.

•Good to know! I'm not planning to move but I'll remember that.

Overall the payment process isn't too bad once you understand it. The hard part is getting approved in the first place! Sounds like you're past that hurdle.

•Yeah the 6 week wait for adjudication was stressful but I'm glad it worked out. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!

Welcome to the unemployment club nobody wants to be in! But seriously, this thread has good advice. The payment system works fine once you get it set up.

ThunderBolt7
•Haha thanks! Hopefully I won't be in the club too long but good to know the system works.

Final reminder: your first payment might be for multiple weeks if there was a delay in processing your claim. Don't panic if the amount looks higher than expected - check your payment history to see the breakdown.

•That's good to know! I was wondering about that since I was approved for benefits going back to when I first filed.

Good luck with everything! The Washington ESD system has its problems but the payments are consistent once you're in the routine. Just stay on top of your weekly filings.
