How will I receive my Washington ESD unemployment benefits - payment methods?
Just got approved for unemployment after waiting 6 weeks for adjudication to clear up. Now I'm wondering about the actual payment process - how will I receive my unemployment benefits from Washington ESD? I set up direct deposit during my initial application but I'm not sure if that's automatically how they'll send payments. Do I need to do anything else to make sure I get my money? Also worried about timing since I have rent due next week.

Congrats on getting approved! If you set up direct deposit during your application, that's how Washington ESD will send your benefits. Usually takes 2-3 business days to hit your account after you file your weekly claim. Make sure your bank info is correct in your account.

•Thank you! I double-checked and my routing and account numbers look right. Fingers crossed it comes through quickly.

•Mine always comes on Tuesdays when I file my weekly claim on Sunday. Pretty consistent timing once you get in the routine.

You can also check your payment history in your Washington ESD account to see when payments are issued. If direct deposit doesn't work for some reason, they'll mail you a debit card instead.

•Good to know there's a backup option. I really hope the direct deposit works though - need that money ASAP.

•The debit card takes like a week to arrive in the mail so definitely better if direct deposit works

Had issues with Washington ESD not recognizing my bank info even though I entered it correctly. Spent weeks trying to call them to fix it. Finally used claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent who sorted it out in 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Wow, that's exactly what I'm worried about happening. How does that service work?

•You just tell them when you want to call Washington ESD and they handle getting you connected to an agent. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting hung up on.

•Is there a cost for using that? Seems too good to be true

Make sure you file your weekly claim every week even if you don't get paid right away. If you miss filing a week you can lose benefits for that whole week.

•Yes, I've been filing religiously every Sunday. Too scared to miss a week and lose money.

•Smart approach. The system is pretty unforgiving about missed weeks.

washington esd payments usually come tuesday or wednesday if you file sunday. sometimes banks take an extra day to process though so dont panic if it doesnt show up tuesday morning

•That's reassuring, thanks. I'll try not to stress if it doesn't show up immediately.

•Yeah, my credit union always processes it a day later than the big banks for some reason.

You can also sign up for text notifications in your Washington ESD account so you get alerts when payments are processed. Helps with peace of mind.

•Oh that's a great idea! I'll set that up right now.

•Those notifications are super helpful, especially when you first start getting benefits and aren't sure about the timing.

What if your direct deposit info is wrong? I think I might have entered the wrong routing number when I applied months ago but never noticed until now.

•You can update your bank info in your Washington ESD account under payment preferences. Just make sure to do it before your next weekly claim processes.

•If you can't get through online, that's another situation where Claimyr could help you reach an agent to fix it over the phone.

•I had to call to change mine and it was a nightmare trying to get through. Took me like 15 tries over 3 days.

Just remember that Washington ESD unemployment benefits are taxable income. You might want to have them withhold taxes or set some aside for next year.

Diego Rojas
•Good point. I completely forgot about taxes. Can I set up tax withholding after I've already been approved?

Aisha Abdullah
•Yes, you can change your tax withholding election in your account settings. I think it's 10% federal withholding if you choose it.

•Yeah the direct deposit system works really well. Just wish Washington ESD would fix their phone system so people could actually get help when they need it.

One thing to watch out for - if you work any hours during the week, even just a few, it can delay your payment while they verify your wages. Make sure you report all work accurately on your weekly claim.

•I haven't worked any hours yet but good to know for the future. How long does that verification usually take?

NeonNova
•Usually just a few extra days but sometimes it can take a week or more if they need to contact your employer.

If anyone is having trouble reaching Washington ESD about payment issues, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that gets you connected to actual agents. Saved me hours of calling and redialing. Check out claimyr.com if you're stuck.

•Honestly anything that helps you avoid the Washington ESD phone maze is worth it. I've wasted entire days trying to get through.

Your first payment might be a little different because they sometimes backdate to when you first filed. Don't be surprised if it's for more than one week.

Diego Rojas
•Oh interesting! I had to wait 6 weeks for adjudication so maybe I'll get backpay for some of those weeks?

Anastasia Sokolov
•Yes, if you were eligible for those weeks you should get backpay. Check your payment history to see what weeks are covered.

make sure your bank account can handle direct deposits. some banks have limits or holds on electronic transfers that could delay access to your money

•Good point. I'll call my bank to make sure there won't be any issues.

The Washington ESD payment system is actually pretty good once you get it set up right. It's just getting to that point that's the challenge with all their phone and website issues.

•That's encouraging. I'm hoping I'm past the worst of it now that I'm approved.

•Yeah, the weekly claims are pretty straightforward and payments are reliable. It's just the initial setup and any problems that are a pain to resolve.

Don't forget to keep doing your job search activities even though you're approved. Washington ESD can audit your job search log at any time and cut off benefits if you're not meeting requirements.

Diego Rojas
•Yes, I've been keeping detailed records of all my job applications and networking activities. Not taking any chances with that.

•Smart. I know someone who lost benefits because they couldn't prove they were looking for work when Washington ESD audited them.

If you need help with anything related to your payments or account, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier is legit. Used it myself when I had a payment hold that I couldn't figure out. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent who explained what was happening and fixed it.

Just want to add that if you ever need to change your direct deposit info, do it right after you file your weekly claim so you have a full week for it to process before the next payment.

Diego Rojas
•That's good timing advice. I'll remember that if I ever need to update my banking info.

Anastasia Sokolov
•Yeah, timing is everything with Washington ESD. Better to be safe and give yourself extra time for any changes to process.

Congrats on getting through the adjudication process! That's the hardest part. Once you're approved and have direct deposit set up, it's pretty smooth sailing as long as you keep filing your weekly claims and meeting the job search requirements.
