How are unemployment benefits paid by Washington ESD - direct deposit vs check?

I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and I'm wondering how the payments actually work. Do they send checks in the mail or is it all direct deposit now? I set up my banking info when I filed my claim but I'm not sure if that means automatic deposits or if I still need to do something else. Also how long does it usually take to get your first payment after you're approved? I filed my weekly claim on Sunday but haven't seen anything in my account yet.

Washington ESD switched to mostly direct deposit years ago. If you entered your bank account info correctly when you filed, your payments should go directly to that account. Usually takes 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim for the money to show up. You can check your payment history on your ESD account to see if it's been processed.

Thanks! I'll check my account online. Do they send any kind of confirmation when they process the payment?

Yes, you'll see it in your payment history section and they usually send an email notification too if you have that set up.

Make sure your banking info is 100% correct because if there's any error they'll mail you a debit card instead and that takes forever to arrive. I had one digit wrong in my account number and had to wait 2 weeks for the card.

Oh no, how do I double check that my banking info is right? Can I update it if needed?

Log into your ESD account and go to the payment method section. You can update it there but it might delay your next payment while they verify the new info.

I had to call Washington ESD to update my bank info and it was impossible to get through. Spent hours on hold just to talk to someone for 5 minutes.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much time when I needed to update my payment info.

Never heard of that. Does it actually work or is it some kind of scam?

0 coins

It's legit. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual Washington ESD agent. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

Interesting, I might try that if I can't get through the normal way. The hold times are ridiculous.

They also offer a debit card option if you don't want direct deposit. The Washington ESD debit card works at ATMs and you can use it like a regular debit card. Some people prefer that for budgeting reasons.

Is there any fee for using the debit card? I'd rather just have it go to my regular bank account.

There are some fees for certain transactions like out-of-network ATM withdrawals. Direct deposit is definitely the cheapest option.

Just be patient with the first payment. Mine took almost a week because it was right after a holiday weekend. After that first one, they were pretty consistent every Tuesday or Wednesday.

Good to know! I was starting to worry something went wrong.

Mine always comes on Tuesdays like clockwork. As long as you file your weekly claim by Sunday night you should get paid that week.

Don't forget you have to keep filing weekly claims even after you're approved! I see people miss payments because they think it's automatic once you get approved. You have to file every single week you want benefits.

Yes I've been doing that. The website reminds you but it's easy to forget if you're not checking regularly.

I set up a calendar reminder every Sunday to file my weekly claim. Never want to miss a week by accident.

Smart! Missing even one week can mess up your whole payment schedule.

If you're doing direct deposit make sure your bank doesn't have any weird holds on electronic deposits. Some smaller banks will hold unemployment payments for a few extra days which is super annoying when you need the money.

This happened to me! My credit union held the deposit for 3 business days the first time. After a few payments they stopped doing that.

I'll call my bank to ask about their policy. Thanks for the heads up.

The Washington ESD payment system is actually pretty reliable once you get it set up correctly. I've been getting benefits for 4 months now and only had one late payment which was during that system maintenance they did in November.

Yeah the system upgrades always mess things up for a few days but overall it works fine.

Good to hear! I was worried about reliability after reading some horror stories online.

Most of those stories are from people who had issues with their claims or didn't follow the rules properly. If your claim is straightforward the payments are pretty consistent.

One thing to watch out for - if you start working part time while collecting benefits, make sure you report those earnings correctly or they'll create an overpayment situation. The payment calculation gets more complicated when you have work income.

I'm not working right now but that's good to know for the future. How do you report part time work?

0 coins

NebulaNova

•

When you file your weekly claim there's a section asking about any work you did that week. You have to report gross earnings, not take home pay.

Pro tip: take screenshots of your weekly claim submissions and payment history. If there's ever a dispute about payments you'll have your own records to reference. I learned this the hard way when they said I missed filing a claim that I knew I had filed.

Great advice! I always screenshot the confirmation page after I submit my weekly claim.

I'll start doing that. Better safe than sorry with this stuff.

Exactly. The Washington ESD website can be glitchy sometimes so having your own documentation is crucial.

If you ever need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about payment issues, I had good luck using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got through to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever. Really helpful when I had a payment that didn't show up on time.

I might bookmark that for future reference. Hopefully I won't need it but good to know it exists.

I used Claimyr too when my payments got stopped for some verification issue. Agent was able to sort it out right away.

Yeah they're really helpful for those situations where you need to actually talk to a human being instead of just navigating the website.

Just remember to keep track of how much you're receiving for tax purposes. Washington ESD will send you a 1099-G at tax time but it's good to keep your own records throughout the year.

Oh right, unemployment is taxable income. Do they withhold taxes automatically or do I need to set that up?

0 coins

You can choose to have federal taxes withheld when you set up your claim. It's optional but saves you from owing a big tax bill later.

0 coins

I wish I had done tax withholding from the start. Ended up owing like $800 at tax time last year.

The whole payment process is pretty straightforward once you understand it. File your weekly claim by Sunday, get paid Tuesday or Wednesday, repeat every week. Just make sure you're doing your job search requirements too or they'll stop your payments.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I feel much more confident about the process now.

No problem! This stuff can be confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it.
