How is unemployment paid out by Washington ESD - confused about payment schedule
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after waiting 3 weeks for adjudication and I'm confused about how Washington ESD actually pays out the money. Do they send checks? Direct deposit? How often? My claim shows I'm approved for $487 weekly but I haven't received anything yet and it's been 4 days since approval. I set up direct deposit during the application but not sure if that's working. Can someone explain the whole payment process?

Washington ESD does direct deposit if you set it up, otherwise they mail a debit card. Payments usually come on Wednesdays if you file your weekly claim by Sunday. Since you just got approved, your first payment might take an extra few days to process through the system.

•Thanks! I did set up direct deposit so hopefully it hits my account tomorrow. Do I still need to file weekly claims even though I'm already approved?

•Yes, you MUST file your weekly claim every week or you won't get paid. Log into your account every Sunday and complete the weekly claim questions.

the debit card option sucks btw, they charge fees for everything. stick with direct deposit if you can

•What kind of fees? I'm thinking about switching to the card because my bank account got closed last month.

•ATM fees, balance inquiry fees, basically anything you do costs money. try to get your bank account sorted first

Washington ESD payment schedule is pretty consistent once you get into the routine. File your weekly claim between Sunday and the following Saturday (but most people do it Sunday morning). If you file by Sunday night, payment typically processes Tuesday and hits your account Wednesday morning. Missing a weekly claim filing will delay your payment until the following week.

•What if I file late, like on Thursday? Do I lose that week's money completely?

Daniel Washington
•No, you can still file late but your payment will be delayed. You have until Saturday to file for that benefit week, but it might not process until the following payment cycle.

•I've filed late before and still got paid, just took longer. Washington ESD is pretty forgiving about late filings as long as you're within the week.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to check on your payment status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling when my payments stopped and I needed to know why.

•Is that legit? How does it work exactly?

Charlotte White
•Yeah it's real, they basically handle the calling and waiting for you. When an agent picks up, they connect you. Way better than sitting on hold for 2+ hours.

•Interesting, I might try that if my payment doesn't show up this week. The phone lines are impossible.

WAIT does anyone know if they backdate payments to when you first applied or when you got approved? I applied 6 weeks ago but just got approved last week and I'm stressing about whether I'll get the money for those first few weeks...

Daniel Washington
•They backdate to your claim start date if there were no disqualifying issues. So if you applied 6 weeks ago and were just stuck in adjudication, you should get paid for all eligible weeks.

•Oh thank god, I was about to lose my apartment. So I should see like 6 weeks worth of payments?

Nora Bennett
•Yes, but you still need to file weekly claims for each of those weeks retroactively. Check your account to see if there are backdated weekly claims waiting for you to complete.

The payment amounts are confusing too. Like my benefit amount shows $425 weekly but I only got $398 last week. Is Washington ESD taking taxes out automatically?
0 coins
Nora Bennett
•They withhold federal taxes at 10% if you elected that option during setup. State of Washington doesn't tax unemployment benefits so no state withholding.

Lauren Zeb
•I don't remember choosing tax withholding. How do I check what I selected?

Daniel Washington
•Log into your Washington ESD account and look for tax withholding preferences. You can change it if needed, but it only affects future payments.

Pro tip: set up text alerts for your payments. Washington ESD will send you a text when your payment processes. Helps you know if something went wrong before waiting all week.

Oscar Murphy
•How do you set that up? I don't see that option in my account.

Anthony Young
•It's under notification preferences or account settings. Might be called 'payment alerts' or something similar.

honestly the whole system is a mess. sometimes payments are late for no reason, sometimes they skip weeks, sometimes the direct deposit just doesn't work. been dealing with this for months and it's never consistent

•That's terrifying. I'm already struggling to pay rent and if payments are unreliable I'm screwed.

•While there can be occasional delays, most payments are pretty reliable if you file your weekly claims on time and don't have any eligibility issues.

•maybe it's just me then but I've had way too many problems. calling them never helps either

Question about holidays - do payments still come out on Wednesdays if it's a holiday week? Like this week with Presidents Day?
0 coins
Nora Bennett
•Holiday weeks usually delay payments by one day. So if Wednesday is a holiday, expect payment Thursday instead.

Matthew Sanchez
•Good to know, thanks. I was worried I'd have to wait until the following week.

For anyone still confused about the payment process, Washington ESD has a payment calendar on their website that shows exactly when payments go out each week. Super helpful for planning your budget.

Oscar Murphy
•That sounds useful. Do you have a link to that calendar?

Ella Thompson
•It's on the main Washington ESD website under benefit information or payment schedules. Should be easy to find.

My sister got her payment method switched from direct deposit to debit card without requesting it and Washington ESD said it was a 'security measure' but wouldn't explain why. Anyone else experience this?

Daniel Washington
•That can happen if there are issues with your bank account or if they detect suspicious activity. She should call to get it sorted out.

•She tried calling but couldn't get through. This is so frustrating.

•This is exactly when I'd use Claimyr again. When you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about account issues, it's worth it to skip the phone nightmare.

Do payments ever come early? Like if I file my weekly claim on Sunday morning, could I see money Tuesday instead of Wednesday?

Nora Bennett
•Occasionally payments process a day early but don't count on it. Wednesday is the standard and planning for that keeps you from being disappointed.

•Fair enough. I'm just eager to see that first payment hit my account!

The debit card they send comes from KeyBank if anyone's wondering. Had to call them once when my card got damaged and they sent a replacement pretty quickly.

Ryan Andre
•How long did the replacement take? Mine got bent and won't work in ATMs.

Royal_GM_Mark
•About 5 business days. You can also get emergency cash at KeyBank branches while waiting for the new card.

Important note: if you work part-time while collecting unemployment, your payment amount will be reduced based on your earnings. You still need to report all work when filing weekly claims.

Oscar Murphy
•How much can you earn before it affects your benefits? I might pick up some gig work.
0 coins
Amelia Cartwright
•In Washington, you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount and still receive partial unemployment. Anything over that amount gets deducted dollar for dollar.

Chris King
•Wait, so if my weekly benefit is $487 like OP's, I can earn $487 from work and still get unemployment money?
0 coins
Amelia Cartwright
•Not exactly. It's more complex - they deduct 75% of your earnings over $5. So if you earn $100, they subtract $71.25 from your benefits.

Does anyone know if Washington ESD sends email confirmations when payments are processed? I keep checking my bank account obsessively.
0 coins
Anthony Young
•They do if you have email notifications enabled. Check your account settings to turn them on.

•Perfect, I'll set that up right now. Thanks!

PSA: Keep track of your total benefit amount. Washington unemployment has a maximum you can collect (usually 26 weeks worth). Once you hit that limit, benefits stop even if you're still unemployed.
0 coins
Oscar Murphy
•26 weeks seems like a lot but also not nearly enough if you can't find work. What happens after that?
0 coins
Zachary Hughes
•After regular unemployment runs out, you'd need to look into other assistance programs or extended benefits if available. But hopefully you find work before then!

One thing that helped me was creating a separate savings account just for unemployment payments. That way I could budget better and not accidentally spend money I needed for rent.

Admin_Masters
•That's actually brilliant. I'm terrible at budgeting and this would help me not blow through the money too fast.
0 coins
Mia Alvarez
•Exactly! Unemployment is temporary so treating it like emergency funds helps you make it last longer.

For the OP - your first payment might take a bit longer since the system needs to set up all your payment info. After that it should be pretty routine. Don't panic if it takes a few extra days this first time.

Oscar Murphy
•That makes me feel better. I was starting to think something went wrong with my approval.

•Yeah, first payments often have an extra processing delay. Once you're in the system it runs much smoother.

Just want to add that if you ever need to reach Washington ESD urgently about payment issues, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually works. Used it last month when my payments stopped randomly and I needed answers fast. Worth checking out their demo video if phone tag with Washington ESD is driving you crazy.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's not free but honestly saved me so much time and stress. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual person at Washington ESD and this gets you there.

•I'll keep that bookmarked in case I run into issues. Hopefully my payments start coming regularly and I won't need it.
