How does unemployment checks work - Washington ESD payment process confusing me
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD but I'm really confused about how the actual payment process works. Do they send physical checks or direct deposit? How often do payments come? I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday but haven't seen any money yet and it's Thursday. Is this normal? Also do I need to do anything special to keep getting paid each week? The website isn't super clear about the whole process.

Washington ESD typically does direct deposit if you set it up, otherwise they mail debit cards. Payments usually come 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim. Since you just filed Sunday, Thursday is about right for timing.

•Ok that makes sense, I did set up direct deposit so I'll keep checking my account. Thanks!

•Yeah the timing is pretty consistent once you get into the rhythm of it.

The key thing is filing your weekly claim EVERY week by the deadline. You have to certify that you're able and available for work, actively searching for jobs, and report any work or income. Miss a week and you don't get paid for that week.

•What's the deadline for filing weekly claims? I want to make sure I don't miss it.

•You need to file between Sunday and the following Saturday. Most people do it Sunday mornings to get it out of the way.

•I always set a reminder on my phone for Sunday mornings because I almost forgot once and panicked lol

Had similar confusion when I started. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your payments, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me when I needed to ask about a payment delay. Way easier than trying to call the regular number.

•Good to know, I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues. Thanks for the tip!

Just to add - your first payment might take a little longer than usual because they're processing everything for the first time. After that it should be pretty regular.

•That's reassuring, I was starting to worry something went wrong.

•Yeah first payment is always nerve-wracking but once it comes through you'll feel better about the whole process

make sure you keep track of your job search activities too because they can ask for proof anytime. I use a simple spreadsheet with company names, dates, and how I applied.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

Asher Levin
•It's 3 job contacts per week minimum, but check the specific requirements on your weekly claim form.

•Yeah I usually do 4-5 just to be safe. Better to have too many than too few if they audit you.

The Washington ESD debit card is actually pretty convenient once you get it. You can use it anywhere or transfer money to your regular bank account.

•I set up direct deposit though, so I shouldn't get a debit card right?
0 coins
Lia Quinn
•Correct, if you have direct deposit set up properly you won't get the debit card.

•Oh yeah, forgot you mentioned direct deposit. You should be all set then.

One thing that caught me off guard was taxes. They don't automatically take out federal taxes from your unemployment payments unless you request it. You might want to consider having them withhold taxes or set some aside yourself.

Jackie Martinez
•Oh wow I didn't even think about taxes. How do I have them withhold taxes?

Marina Hendrix
•You can change your tax withholding preferences in your Washington ESD account online. It's under the profile or account settings somewhere.

•Yeah definitely do this if you don't want a surprise tax bill next year. They'll withhold 10% for federal taxes.

ugh the washington esd phone system is so frustrating when you have questions about payments. I spent literally 3 hours on hold last week just to ask about a delayed payment

Issac Nightingale
•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. Gets you through to an actual person without the endless hold times.

Justin Trejo
•I might have to try that next time. This whole system is so unnecessarily complicated.

•The phone system is definitely the worst part of dealing with Washington ESD unfortunately

Just want to say thanks for asking this question because I was wondering the same thing. The whole process seemed really unclear to me too.

Quick tip: keep checking your payment history in your Washington ESD account online. It shows the status of each weekly claim and when payments were issued. Really helpful for tracking everything.

•Good idea, I'll start checking that regularly. Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone!

Don't forget you also have to report any work you do, even if it's just a few hours. They'll reduce your benefits based on what you earn but you still need to report it.

Jackie Martinez
•What if I do some freelance work or gig work? Do I need to report that too?
0 coins
Asher Levin
•Yes, any income needs to be reported. Freelance, gig work, part-time jobs, everything.

Butch Sledgehammer
•Exactly, they're pretty strict about income reporting so it's better to over-report than under-report

I've been on unemployment for 2 months now and the payment timing is very consistent. Once you get into the routine it becomes pretty straightforward.

•That's good to hear. I'm hoping it gets easier once I understand the process better.

•It definitely does! The first few weeks are always the most confusing.

Make sure your address is updated in your Washington ESD account too. If they need to mail you anything important and your address is wrong, it can cause delays.
0 coins
Jackie Martinez
•Good point, I'll double-check that my address is correct.

•Yeah I learned that the hard way when I moved and forgot to update it

The whole system is honestly pretty well designed once you figure it out. The hardest part is just getting started and understanding all the requirements.

One more thing - keep copies of everything. Your weekly claim confirmations, payment records, job search logs, everything. You never know when you might need to reference something.

•That's really smart advice. I'll start keeping better records of everything.

I remember being just as confused when I started. The key is just following the weekly routine and staying on top of the requirements. You'll get the hang of it quickly.

Just want to add that if you ever have issues with payments or need to speak to someone at Washington ESD, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier is legit. I used it when my payments got held up and they helped me get through to resolve it quickly.
