Does Washington ESD unemployment pay weekly - confused about payment schedule
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and I'm confused about when I actually get paid. Do they pay weekly or is it every two weeks? I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday but I don't see any money in my account yet. Also do I need to file every single week even if I don't work at all? This is my first time on unemployment and the website doesn't make it super clear about the payment timing.

Yes, Washington ESD pays weekly but there's usually a one week waiting period for your first payment. You file your weekly claim every week (usually Sunday through Saturday) and if you're eligible, the payment comes 2-3 business days later. So you might not see your first payment until the second week.

•OK that makes sense about the waiting period. So I should keep filing every week even if I don't get paid the first week?

•Exactly! You must file every single week to maintain your claim, even during the waiting week. Miss a week and you could lose benefits.

The payment schedule is weekly but it depends on your claim status. If everything is clear, you file Sunday and get paid Tuesday/Wednesday. But if there are any issues or your claim goes into adjudication, payments can be delayed for weeks or months.

•What's adjudication? My claim status just says 'valid' right now.

•Adjudication is when they review your claim for eligibility issues. If your status says valid, you should be good to go for regular weekly payments.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask about my payment timing but their phone lines are impossible. Been calling for days and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. Anyone know a better way to reach them?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made a huge difference for me.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how backed up their phone system is.

•Yeah it's real. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you so you don't have to sit on hold all day. Really helped me get answers about my claim status.

ugh the payment system is so confusing!! I thought I would get paid every two weeks like a regular job but apparently its weekly? but then why do I only file once a week if I get paid weekly shouldn't I file twice a week???

•No, you file once a week to certify for that week's benefits. The weekly claim covers the entire previous week (Sunday-Saturday). Then you get paid for that week a few days later.

•oh ok that makes more sense. so the weekly claim is like telling them I was unemployed that week and then they pay me for it?

The Washington ESD system is a joke. I've been waiting 3 weeks for my payments and every time I call they give me a different excuse. First it was a 'computer glitch', then they said I needed to verify my identity, now they're saying there's an issue with my employer information. Meanwhile my rent is due and I can't get a straight answer.

•That sounds like your claim might be in adjudication. Have you checked your online account to see if there are any pending issues or documents you need to submit?

•Yeah I checked and it just says 'under review' with no details. Super helpful right?

•When claims are under review it usually means they're waiting for information from your employer or there's a question about your separation. You really need to talk to an agent to get specifics.

Just want to confirm - you get paid weekly but you have to file your weekly claim EVERY week. Don't skip weeks thinking you can catch up later because you can't. I learned this the hard way and lost 2 weeks of benefits.

Mateo Rodriguez
•Wait, you can't backdate missed weeks at all?

Zoe Dimitriou
•Nope, if you miss filing a weekly claim, that week is gone forever. Washington ESD doesn't let you go back and claim missed weeks except in very specific circumstances.

The weekly filing is Sunday through Saturday each week. You can file starting Sunday morning for the previous week. Payments usually hit your account Tuesday or Wednesday if you have direct deposit set up.

Mateo Rodriguez
•Do I have to file exactly on Sunday or can I wait until later in the week?

QuantumQuest
•You can file anytime Sunday through the following Saturday, but don't wait too long. If you file later in the week, your payment will be delayed accordingly.

Update: I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out my payments were being held up because I forgot to complete the work search requirements. The agent walked me through exactly what I needed to do. Would definitely recommend it if you're stuck trying to reach them.

•What are the work search requirements? I don't think anyone explained that to me.

Ethan Brown
•You have to apply for jobs and keep a log of your job search activities. In Washington you need to do at least 3 job search activities per week. The agent explained it all to me.

Been on unemployment for 8 months now and yes, it's weekly payments. File every Sunday, get paid every Wednesday like clockwork. The key is staying on top of your weekly claims and not missing any weeks.

•8 months seems like a long time, is there a limit to how long you can collect?

•Regular unemployment in Washington is up to 26 weeks, but I had some extended benefits available. It varies depending on your situation and when you filed.

Make sure you set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Getting paid by check takes forever and sometimes they get lost in the mail. Direct deposit is much faster and more reliable.

Mateo Rodriguez
•How do I set up direct deposit? I don't see that option in my account.

Mei Zhang
•Log into your Washington ESD account and look for 'Payment Method' or 'Direct Deposit' in your profile settings. You'll need your bank account and routing numbers.

One thing to watch out for - if you work any hours during the week, even part-time, you need to report it on your weekly claim. They'll reduce your benefit amount but you might still get some payment. Don't try to hide work hours because they will find out.

Mateo Rodriguez
•What happens if you work more than a certain number of hours in a week?
0 coins
Liam McGuire
•If you work too many hours or earn too much, you might not get any unemployment benefits for that week. But you still need to file your weekly claim to report the work.

The waiting week is the worst part. You're already stressed about money and then you have to wait an extra week for your first payment. But after that, if everything goes smoothly, it's pretty regular.

Mateo Rodriguez
•Is the waiting week just for the very first payment or every time you file a new claim?
0 coins
Amara Eze
•Just for new claims. If you have to reopen a claim later, you might have another waiting week depending on the circumstances.

Pro tip: file your weekly claim as early as possible on Sunday. The system can get slow later in the day when everyone is trying to file at once. I usually do mine Sunday morning and never have issues.

•Good to know! I was planning to do it Sunday evening but I'll try morning instead.

•Yeah, Sunday evenings the system can be really slow or sometimes crash. Early morning is definitely the way to go.

Washington ESD's payment schedule: File weekly claim Sunday-Saturday, payment processes Monday-Tuesday, money in account Tuesday-Wednesday. Pretty consistent once you get into the routine.
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
•That's helpful to know the exact timeline. So I should expect payment within 2-3 days of filing?
0 coins
NeonNomad
•Exactly, as long as there are no issues with your claim. Holidays might delay it by a day but otherwise it's very predictable.

I was so confused about this when I first started too. The key things to remember: 1) File every single week, 2) Payments are weekly, 3) There's a one week waiting period, 4) Set up direct deposit, 5) Report any work hours honestly.

Mateo Rodriguez
•This is a great summary, thanks! I think I understand the system much better now.

•You're welcome! It's confusing at first but once you get the hang of it, it becomes routine. Just don't miss any weeks!

Another thing - keep track of your payments and make sure they match what you expect. Sometimes there are errors and you want to catch them early. I had a week where they underpaid me and it took forever to get it fixed.

Mateo Rodriguez
•How do you know how much you should be getting each week?
0 coins
Dylan Mitchell
•Your weekly benefit amount should be listed in your Washington ESD account. It's based on your previous earnings. Mine shows $547 per week before taxes.

Don't forget about taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them later when you file your tax return.
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
•How much do they withhold for taxes if you choose that option?
0 coins
Sofia Martinez
•They withhold 10% for federal taxes. You can set this up in your account settings. I'd recommend it so you don't get hit with a big tax bill later.

The most important thing is to stay consistent with filing your weekly claims. I know people who missed a few weeks and then had to start over with a whole new claim. Such a hassle and you lose benefits in the process.

Mateo Rodriguez
•What happens if you miss just one week? Do you really have to start completely over?
0 coins
Dmitry Volkov
•For just one week, you might be able to get it sorted out by calling Washington ESD, but it's not guaranteed. Better to just never miss a week if you can help it.

I've been helping my neighbor navigate the Washington ESD system and the weekly payment schedule was confusing for her too. Once she understood that filing weekly claims is like punching a time clock - you have to do it every week to get paid - it clicked for her.
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
•That's a good analogy! So it's like clocking in for unemployment benefits each week.
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•Exactly! You're certifying that you were unemployed and available for work that week, and in return they pay you for that week.

Just to add - if you're ever unsure about anything with your claim, don't guess. Try to get through to Washington ESD to ask questions. I used that Claimyr service a few times when I had questions and it was worth it to get accurate information instead of making assumptions.

•Thanks for all the advice everyone! I feel much more confident about the process now. Going to file my weekly claim this Sunday and set up direct deposit.
