Washington ESD unemployment benefits paid weekly - confused about payment schedule
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and I'm trying to understand when I'll actually get paid. The paperwork mentions weekly claims but I'm not sure if that means I get paid every week or if there's a different schedule. Do I need to file something every week? And when do the payments actually hit my account? This is my first time dealing with unemployment so I want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

Yes, Washington ESD pays unemployment benefits weekly, but you have to file your weekly claim every week to get paid. You can't just sit back and wait for money to show up. Log into your account every Sunday (or Monday at the latest) and complete your weekly claim certification.

•Oh wow, I had no idea I needed to do something every week! What happens if I miss filing one week?

•If you miss filing your weekly claim, you won't get paid for that week. You might be able to file it late but there's usually a penalty or they might deny it completely.

The payments usually hit your account 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim, assuming there are no issues. If you're on direct deposit it's faster than waiting for a debit card.

•How do you set up direct deposit? I've been waiting for my debit card for over a week now.

•You can set up direct deposit in your SecureAccess Washington account under payment preferences. Way better than dealing with their debit card system.

I've been on unemployment for 3 months now and yes, it's weekly payments but you MUST file every single week. The system is pretty strict about it. Also make sure you're reporting any work you do during the week, even if it's just a few hours. They will find out and you'll end up with an overpayment.

•What counts as work that I need to report? Like if I do some freelance stuff or help a friend with their business?

•Any work where you earn money needs to be reported, even cash jobs. They cross-reference with tax records so it's not worth the risk.

•This is why I use Claimyr when I need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about reporting work. So much easier than trying to call them directly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

The weekly filing is annoying but it's not that hard once you get used to it. Usually takes me about 5 minutes to answer all the questions. Just be honest about your job search activities because they do audit people randomly.

•Job search activities? What do you mean by that?

•You have to be actively looking for work and they want to know what you did each week. Apply for jobs, go to job fairs, network, etc. Keep track of everything.

ugh the weekly claims are such a pain especially when the website is down every other sunday. I've missed payments because of their technical issues and good luck getting through to anyone on the phone to fix it

•You can usually file late if it was due to technical issues on their end. Document the error messages and times when you tried to access the site.

•yeah right, like they actually care about documentation. I've tried that before and they just give me the runaround

Wait, so if I file my weekly claim on Sunday, when exactly does the money show up? I'm trying to plan my bills around this.

Lola Perez
•If you file Sunday, usually see the money by Wednesday or Thursday if there are no issues with your claim.

•That's about right for direct deposit. The debit card can take an extra day or two sometimes.

This is all really helpful! One more question - what if I get a part-time job while I'm collecting? Do I still file weekly claims?
0 coins
Ethan Scott
•Yes, you still file weekly and report your earnings. They'll reduce your benefit amount but you might still get partial benefits depending on how much you earned.

Millie Long
•The formula is complicated but basically if you earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you'll still get something.

I hate how they make you jump through all these hoops every week just to get money you already qualified for. Like we don't have enough stress already

•I get the frustration but they have to verify eligibility continuously. Too many people try to game the system unfortunately.

•I guess but it still feels like they assume everyone is cheating from the start

For anyone struggling to get through to Washington ESD when you have questions about your weekly claims, I had good luck with Claimyr. They help you actually connect with a real person instead of sitting on hold forever. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Is that like a paid service? How much does it cost?

•They have different options but honestly it was worth it for me. Way better than the stress of trying to call them yourself when you need answers fast.

Pro tip: set a reminder on your phone for every Sunday to file your weekly claim. I almost forgot a couple times and that would have been a disaster.

•Good idea! I'm definitely going to do that. Thanks everyone for all the help!

•You're welcome! The system seems complicated at first but you'll get the hang of it quickly.

One thing nobody mentioned - if you're on standby through your union, the process is a little different. You still file weekly but you don't have to do job search activities. Just make sure Washington ESD knows about your standby status.

Genevieve Cavalier
•What's standby status? Is that different from regular unemployment?
0 coins
Laura Lopez
•Yeah, it's for people who are temporarily laid off but expect to be called back to work within a certain timeframe. Usually union jobs or seasonal work.

The weekly filing thing caught me off guard too when I first got approved. I thought they would just automatically send payments but nope, you have to earn it every week by filing those claims.

KaiEsmeralda
•Right? Like why can't they just send the money if you're already approved? So much unnecessary bureaucracy.

•Because your eligibility can change week to week. If you get a job or become unavailable for work, they need to know immediately.

I've been filing weekly claims for 4 months now and the routine is: file Sunday morning, money hits my account Wednesday afternoon like clockwork. As long as you don't have any flags on your account it's pretty predictable.

Nathaniel Stewart
•What kind of flags would cause delays?

•Things like not doing enough job search activities, reporting work incorrectly, or if they randomly select you for additional verification. Usually resolves within a week or two if you provide what they ask for.

Make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. The weekly is what you get each week (if you file), the maximum is the total you can receive over the entire claim period.

Genevieve Cavalier
•How long does a claim period last? Is there a limit to how long you can collect?

•Regular unemployment in Washington is up to 26 weeks, but it depends on your work history and earnings. Some people qualify for less time.

Just want to add that you can file your weekly claim anytime from Sunday through the following Saturday, but most people do it Sunday morning to get the payment as early as possible in the week.

•Good point! I didn't know you had that whole week to file. I thought it had to be done on Sunday.

Ethan Scott
•Yeah but definitely don't wait until Saturday. If there are any issues with your claim you want time to resolve them before the next week starts.

For what it's worth, when I had questions about my payment schedule and couldn't get through to Washington ESD by phone, Claimyr helped me connect with someone who explained everything clearly. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to understand how it all works.

Genevieve Cavalier
•I might need to look into that if I run into problems. The phone lines seem impossible to get through on.

Santiago Diaz
•Exactly! That's why I ended up using their service. Much less stressful than playing phone roulette with Washington ESD.

Don't forget that your weekly certification is basically you swearing under penalty of perjury that you're eligible for benefits that week. Take it seriously and be accurate with your answers.

•They really make you feel like a criminal just for trying to get help when you're unemployed. The whole system is designed to make you feel guilty.

•I understand the frustration but fraud is a real problem and they have to have safeguards in place. Just be honest and you'll be fine.

One last tip - keep track of all your weekly filings and payments in your own records. I use a simple spreadsheet with dates, amounts, and any issues. Helps if there are ever discrepancies.

•That's really smart. I'm going to start doing that right away. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Quick reminder that you need to keep doing your job search activities even if you're expecting to be called back to a previous job (unless you're on official standby status). A lot of people get confused about this requirement.
0 coins
Laura Lopez
•Right, standby is very specific. Most people aren't actually on standby even if they think they might get called back to work.
0 coins
Genevieve Cavalier
•How do you know if you qualify for standby status? Is that something you apply for separately?
0 coins
Laura Lopez
•Usually your employer has to provide documentation that you're on temporary layoff with a specific recall date. It's not something you can just claim on your own.

Since we're talking about getting accurate information, I'll mention again that when I needed clarification on standby vs. regular benefits, Claimyr was super helpful in getting me connected to someone at Washington ESD who could explain the difference properly. Sometimes the written information online isn't clear enough.

•Honestly, for me it was worth it just for the peace of mind. You can check out their demo video to see how it works before you decide.
