Is unemployment paid weekly in Washington ESD - confused about payment schedule

I just got approved for unemployment benefits and I'm trying to understand when I'll actually get paid. Is unemployment paid weekly by Washington ESD? I've been filing my weekly claims every Sunday but I'm not sure if the payments come out weekly too or if there's a different schedule. My friend said she gets hers every two weeks but that doesn't sound right. Can someone clarify how the payment timing works?

Yes, unemployment benefits in Washington are paid weekly, but you need to file your weekly claim first. The payment usually comes 1-2 business days after you successfully submit your weekly claim if there are no issues.

Thanks! So if I file on Sunday, I should expect payment by Tuesday or Wednesday?

0 coins

Exactly, that's the typical timeline. Make sure you're filing before the deadline each week.

I think it depends on your bank too. Mine always shows up on Tuesdays but my sister gets hers on Wednesdays with a different bank.

Same here, different banks process ACH deposits at different times during the week.

That makes sense, I have Chase so hopefully it'll be consistent.

Wait, I'm really confused about this whole weekly claim thing. I got approved but haven't received any payments yet and it's been 3 weeks. I thought it was automatic once you're approved?

0 coins

No, you have to actively file a weekly claim every week to get paid. Log into your Washington ESD account and look for the 'File Weekly Claim' option.

0 coins

Oh no, I had no idea! I've been waiting this whole time thinking they would just send money automatically.

You can usually file backdated claims for the weeks you missed, but you need to do it ASAP. Contact Washington ESD immediately.

This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions about my payment schedule. I couldn't figure out if my claims were processing correctly and kept getting hung up on when calling. Found their service at claimyr.com and they helped me get connected to an agent who explained everything. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

That sounds helpful, I've been dreading having to call if I run into issues.

I've heard of Claimyr but wasn't sure if it was legit. Did they actually help you get through?

Lim Wong

Yeah, it was actually pretty straightforward. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

The payment schedule is weekly but there are some exceptions. If you're on standby status with your employer, the timing might be different. Also, if there's a holiday, payments can be delayed by a day.

Mary Bates

Good to know about holidays. What's standby status exactly?

0 coins

Standby is when your employer temporarily lays you off but expects to call you back within a specific timeframe. You still file weekly claims but don't have to do job searches.

been getting mine every week for 6 months now, always comes tuesday morning like clockwork

That's reassuring to hear it's been consistent for you.

Lucky you, mine has been all over the place timing wise

Important clarification: Washington ESD processes payments weekly, but you must file your weekly claim by 11:59 PM on Saturday for that week. Miss the deadline and you forfeit that week's payment unless you have good cause for the delay.

Mary Bates

Wait, Saturday night? I thought the deadline was Sunday.

The system might let you file on Sunday morning early, but officially the deadline is Saturday at 11:59 PM. Don't risk it.

I always file mine on Sunday and never had a problem

Your friend might be thinking of a different state or program. Washington definitely pays weekly if you file your claims on time. Some states do bi-weekly but not here.

She might have been talking about her old job's unemployment from another state, that would explain the confusion.

0 coins

Yeah that's probably it. Each state has different rules and payment schedules.

I HATE HOW CONFUSING THEY MAKE EVERYTHING! Why can't they just send you money when you qualify instead of making you jump through hoops every single week???

0 coins

I get the frustration but the weekly claims are how they verify you're still unemployed and eligible.

Still seems like bureaucratic nonsense to me but whatever

Just want to add that if you have any issues with your weekly claim not processing or payments getting stuck, calling Washington ESD directly is usually the fastest way to resolve it. Though getting through can be tough during busy times.

That's when services like Claimyr come in handy. I used them last month when my claim got stuck in some kind of review process.

Seems like several people here have used that service successfully.

Make sure you answer all the weekly claim questions honestly. If you worked any hours or earned any money that week, report it. Trying to hide income will just cause problems later.

Good point, I did some freelance work last week so I'll need to report that.

Axel Bourke

Yeah, they have ways of finding out anyway so it's better to be upfront about it.

The weekly payment thing is actually pretty nice once you get used to it. Helps with budgeting since you know exactly when money is coming in.

Mary Bates

•

That's a good way to look at it, I was worried about the reliability but it sounds pretty consistent.

As long as you don't forget to file your claims it works great

One more tip - set up direct deposit if you haven't already. The debit card option has fees and the checks take forever to arrive in the mail.

Mary Bates

•

I did set up direct deposit during the application process, so that should be good to go.

Smart move, direct deposit is definitely the way to go.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I feel much more confident about the process now. Going to make sure I file my weekly claim this Sunday and watch for the payment early next week.

You've got this! The process becomes routine pretty quickly.

And remember, if you run into any issues getting help from Washington ESD, services like Claimyr are there as a backup option.

Will definitely keep that in mind, thanks again everyone!
