Do you get paid every week for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I just started collecting unemployment and I'm confused about the payment schedule. Do you actually get paid every week for unemployment benefits? I filed my first weekly claim on Sunday but haven't seen any money yet. My friend said she gets paid every other week but another person told me it's weekly. Can someone clarify how often Washington ESD actually pays out unemployment benefits?

You file weekly claims but get paid every other week in Washington. So you'll file a claim this week and next week, then get paid for both weeks together. The payment usually comes 2-3 business days after you file your second weekly claim.

•Oh that makes sense! So I won't see anything until after I file next week's claim?

•Exactly. And make sure you file by the deadline each week or you'll miss that payment period entirely.

It's bi-weekly payments but weekly filing requirements. I learned this the hard way when I thought I could skip a week lol

•Wait what happens if you miss filing one week?

•You basically lose that week's benefits unless you can prove it was Washington ESD's fault somehow. They're pretty strict about the weekly filing deadlines.

The payment schedule can be confusing at first. You file weekly claims every Sunday through Saturday, but Washington ESD processes payments bi-weekly. Your first payment might take longer because they need to verify your claim isn't under adjudication.

•My claim status just says 'approved' so I think I'm good there. Thanks for the explanation!

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to ask questions like this, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals when I needed to check on my payment delays.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•I can't remember the exact price but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of calling 50 times a day. Way less stressful.

•Honestly might try this, I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my job search requirements.

So just to confirm - I file every week but only get paid every other week? That seems weird but I guess it makes sense for processing.

•Yes exactly. File weekly, paid bi-weekly. It's been this way for years in Washington.

make sure you do your job searches too, they check that stuff now more than they used to

•How many job searches do I need to do per week?

StarStrider
•It's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Keep good records because they can audit your claim anytime.

I've been getting unemployment for 2 months now and yeah it's every other week. Direct deposit usually hits my account on Wednesdays if I file both weeks on time.

•Good to know about Wednesday deposits, thanks!

•Mine always comes on Tuesday but could depend on your bank too.

The Washington ESD payment system is actually pretty reliable once you understand it. Just don't miss your weekly filing deadlines and you'll get paid regularly every two weeks.

•What time on Sunday can you start filing the weekly claim?

•I think it's available starting at 6 AM on Sunday morning through the secure website.

I'm still waiting for my first payment after 3 weeks. My claim got stuck in adjudication and I can't get anyone on the phone at Washington ESD to explain what's happening.

•That's exactly when I used Claimyr - when my claim was stuck and I couldn't get through. They got me connected to someone who could actually look at my case.

•Adjudication can take forever unfortunately. I waited 6 weeks for mine to clear.

•6 weeks?! I can't wait that long for my benefits.

Does anyone know if holiday weeks affect the payment schedule? Like if there's a federal holiday?
0 coins
StarStrider
•Holidays can delay payments by a day or two but they don't change the bi-weekly schedule. You still need to file your weekly claims on time.

The system is confusing at first but you get used to it. File every week, get paid every other week. Just set reminders so you don't forget to file.

•Good idea about setting reminders. I'll put it in my phone calendar.

One thing that tripped me up - even if you work part time during a week, you still need to file your weekly claim and report those earnings. They'll adjust your benefit amount but you don't skip filing.

•Oh good to know! I was wondering about that since I might pick up some freelance work.

•Yeah definitely report all earnings. Better to be honest than get hit with an overpayment later.

Just want to emphasize - NEVER miss your weekly filing deadline. I missed one week because I was sick and lost that entire week's benefits. There's no make-up option unless it was their system that was down.

•Wow that's harsh but good to know. I'll make sure to file every week no matter what.

•Can you file early if you know you'll be traveling that weekend?

Aisha Khan
•No, you can only file during your designated week. Plan ahead if you're traveling.

For anyone still confused: File weekly (every week), Get paid bi-weekly (every other week), Payment comes 2-3 days after filing your second week, Direct deposit is faster than checks

I've been helping people with unemployment questions for years and this payment schedule confusion comes up constantly. The key is remembering that filing frequency and payment frequency are different things in Washington.

Omar Fawaz
•That's a great way to think about it - filing vs payment frequency. Thanks for all the help everyone!

•Definitely check out that Claimyr service if you ever need to actually talk to Washington ESD about your claim. Game changer for getting through their phone system.

One last tip - if your payment seems wrong or missing, don't wait weeks to call. The sooner you contact Washington ESD about payment issues, the easier they are to fix. And if you can't get through on the phone, there are services that can help you connect.

•What kind of services help you connect?

•Like Claimyr - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you until they get an agent, then connect you. Super convenient.
