Does Washington ESD unemployment pay weekly or biweekly - confused about payment schedule
I'm really confused about when I'm supposed to get my unemployment payments from Washington ESD. I've been filing my weekly claims every Sunday like they told me to, but I'm not sure if the actual payments come weekly or every two weeks? My friend in Oregon says she gets paid weekly but I've heard different things about Washington state. Can someone explain how the payment schedule actually works? I just got approved last week and want to know when to expect my first payment.

Washington ESD pays unemployment benefits weekly, but there's usually a one-week waiting period before your first payment. So if you just got approved and filed your first weekly claim, you should see your payment within 2-3 business days after filing. Make sure you're filing every week to keep getting payments.

•Thanks! So I file weekly and get paid weekly? That makes sense. I was worried I'd have to wait two weeks between payments.

•Yeah but sometimes there are delays if there are issues with your claim. I had to wait 3 weeks for my first payment because of some verification thing.

Washington ESD pays biweekly, not weekly. Even though you file weekly claims, you get paid every two weeks for both weeks combined. So if you file claims for week 1 and week 2, you'll get one payment covering both weeks.

•That makes sense! So I file every week but only get paid every other week. Thanks for clearing that up.

Butch Sledgehammer
•Yeah exactly, and the payment usually comes on Tuesday or Wednesday after you file your second weekly claim

You file weekly claims but payments are processed weekly too. The key thing is to file your claim every Sunday by midnight. If you miss a week, you won't get paid for that week unless you can show good cause for missing it. The weekly benefit amount is based on your quarterly wages from your base year.

•Good to know about not missing weeks! What happens if I'm late filing by a few hours?

•As long as you file before the deadline the following Saturday, you should be fine. But don't make it a habit - they want consistency.

I was confused about this too when I started. You file weekly claims but payments are biweekly. Make sure you file both weeks or you won't get paid for either week!

The biweekly payment schedule can be frustrating when you're waiting for that first payment. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on payment status, I found claimyr.com really helpful - they can actually get you connected to an agent without waiting on hold forever. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

I had so much trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about payment schedules. Their phone lines are always busy and when I finally got through after like 50 tries, I got disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me connected to an agent in under an hour. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Totally worth it when you need to talk to someone at ESD.

•How much does that cost? I'm already struggling financially and can't afford extra fees.

•It's really reasonable compared to the time you save. Plus when you're not getting payments because of confusion, getting answers quickly pays for itself.

•I might try this too. I've been calling for days about my claim status with no luck.

Just to add - your payment schedule depends on when you first filed too. If you filed on a Tuesday, your biweekly cycle might be different than someone who filed on Sunday.

Tyler Murphy
•I filed on a Sunday so I think I'm on the standard schedule. Still learning all these details!

Sara Unger
•The filing day doesn't really change the biweekly schedule, but it can affect which weeks you're claiming for

Make sure you're checking your ESD account online too. Sometimes there are issues that hold up payments and you won't know unless you log in and check. I had a job search verification issue that delayed my payments for 2 weeks.

Olivia Martinez
•What kind of job search verification? I thought you just had to look for work.

Grace Patel
•You have to keep a log of your job search activities and sometimes they audit it. Make sure you're documenting everything properly.

Been on unemployment for 6 months now and yes its definitely biweekly payments. What confused me at first was thinking weekly claims meant weekly pay but nope, you gotta wait for that biweekly deposit.

Tyler Murphy
•6 months?? How long can you stay on unemployment benefits in Washington?
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
•Usually up to 26 weeks for regular UI benefits, depends on your work history and the economy

weekly payments but dont expect them to be on time every week. ive been getting UI for 3 months and sometimes they come tuesday, sometimes thursday. no consistency at all
0 coins
Charlie Yang
•That's usually because of banking processing times, not Washington ESD. Direct deposit is faster than getting a debit card.

•i have direct deposit set up but still inconsistent timing

Wait, I'm confused. So if I file my weekly claim on Sunday, when exactly do I get paid? Is it the same week or the following week? And what if there's a holiday?
0 coins
ApolloJackson
•You get paid for the week you just reported. So if you file on Sunday for the previous week, payment usually comes Tuesday-Thursday of that same week.
0 coins
Rajiv Kumar
•Okay that makes more sense. And holidays?
0 coins
ApolloJackson
•Holidays can delay payments by a day or two but you still need to file your weekly claim on schedule.

The weekly payment thing is straightforward but what I don't understand is why my payment amount changes from week to week. Sometimes it's my full weekly benefit amount, sometimes it's less. Anyone know why?
0 coins
Charlie Yang
•That's usually because of part-time work earnings that get deducted from your weekly benefit. Did you report any work hours or earnings?
0 coins
Aria Washington
•Oh yeah, I had a few hours of work one week. So they deduct that from my unemployment?
0 coins
Charlie Yang
•Yes, but there's an earnings disregard formula. You can work part-time and still get some unemployment benefits.

Savanna Franklin
The weekly claim thing is just to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work. The actual money comes every two weeks. Super confusing system if you ask me.
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
•Yeah it really is confusing! Why not just make everything weekly if you have to file weekly?
0 coins
Sara Unger
•I think it's just how their computer system processes payments. Easier to batch them biweekly

Another thing about payments - make sure your address is updated in your ESD account. I moved and forgot to update it, which caused a delay in my payments. Had to use Claimyr again to get through to someone to fix it quickly.

•Good tip! I'll double-check my address info.

•How fast did Claimyr get you connected? I'm getting desperate trying to reach ESD.

Make sure you're doing your job search activities too. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they can audit your claims.

Just want to clarify the timing - you file your weekly claim by the Sunday deadline, then if it's your second week of the biweekly cycle, your payment typically processes Monday/Tuesday and hits your account Tuesday/Wednesday.
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
•This is super helpful! So I should expect payment 2-3 days after filing my second weekly claim.
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
•Yep that's been my experience. Sometimes takes until Thursday if there's a holiday
0 coins
Sergio Neal
•And if your payment is delayed or you need to check status, that's when services like claimyr can help you actually reach a Washington ESD agent to find out what's going on

One thing to watch out for - if you miss filing one of your weekly claims, you won't get paid for either week in that biweekly period. You have to file both weeks to get the biweekly payment.
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
•Oh wow, that's important to know! So I can't skip a week even if I forgot?
0 coins
Freya Ross
•You can file late claims but it's more complicated. Better to just set a reminder and file on time every week

Savanna Franklin
•I learned this the hard way when I missed a Sunday deadline and lost two weeks of benefits

The biweekly thing makes budgeting harder too since you're getting bigger payments less frequently instead of smaller weekly ones. Had to adjust my bill paying schedule.
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
•Yeah I can see how that would mess with budgeting. At least it's predictable though.
0 coins
Amy Fleming
•I actually like getting bigger payments less often, feels like more money even though its the same amount

Does anyone know why Washington ESD does biweekly instead of weekly? Seems like most other states do weekly payments.
0 coins
Sara Unger
•I think it's just their system setup. Processing payments takes time and resources so biweekly is more efficient for them.
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
•Some states do weekly, some biweekly. Washington has always been biweekly as far as I know

Juan Moreno
•Probably saves them money on processing fees and administrative costs

Also remember that your waiting week doesn't get paid until after your claim ends, so your first payment might be delayed if you just started claiming.
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
•What's a waiting week? I haven't heard of that before.
0 coins
Juan Moreno
•First week of your claim is unpaid - it's like a deductible. You get it back when your claim ends if you qualify

Freya Ross
•Yeah the waiting week is annoying but everyone has to do it

bottom line - file every week but get paid every 2 weeks. dont overthink it just make sure you file on time

The key is being consistent with your weekly filings. Miss one week and you lose the whole biweekly payment. I set phone reminders every Saturday night to make sure I don't forget.

To summarize for anyone else confused: Washington ESD requires weekly claim filing but pays benefits biweekly. You must file both weeks in the biweekly period to receive payment. Payments typically arrive 2-3 days after filing your second weekly claim of the period.

Been on unemployment for 6 months now and yes it's weekly payments. But you HAVE to file every single week even if you think you might not be eligible that week. Missing weeks can really mess up your claim.

•What happens if you miss a week by accident?

•You can sometimes file for past weeks but you need a good reason and it's a hassle. Better to just never miss a week.

this is all so confusing why cant they just make it simple like file once a month and get paid monthly like other benefits
0 coins

•The weekly system helps track your job search efforts and availability for work more accurately. It's designed to make sure you're actively looking for employment.

Pro tip: set up a reminder on your phone for Sunday evenings to file your weekly claim. I use a recurring alarm and it's saved me from forgetting multiple times.

Does anyone know if the payment schedule is different for standby unemployment versus regular UI? I'm on standby through my union and wasn't sure if the timing is the same.

•Standby status still requires weekly filing and payments are on the same schedule. The main difference is you don't have to job search while on standby.

Washington ESD payments are weekly but dont count on getting them exactly every 7 days. Between processing delays, bank holidays, and system issues, theres always something. Just budget accordingly.

I tried calling Washington ESD last week to confirm my payment schedule and couldn't get through after literally 3 hours of trying. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected in about 45 minutes. The agent confirmed payments are weekly and also helped me understand why one of my payments was delayed.
